Interview with John Crossan, Author of A River of Lies

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write A River of Lies?

My wife and kids! For years they listened to my courtroom stories as a New England litigator and finally convinced me to write "A River of Lies"

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of A River of Lies, what would they be?

Europe's Superstitious or Van Halen's "Jump"... I just love 80s rock!

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Yes and no! I am really into crime fiction but I also enjoy historical fiction, Star Trek fan fiction, and fantasy.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe's Assassin.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I would probably say either the moment our hero, Timothy Pickering, rises to the occasion and agrees to represent one of his students charged with murder, or the moment Timothy and his private investigator, Adrian Watson, discover a third party may be responsible for the death of Jillian Russo.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I like to walk around the house a lot as I write... I literally can't sit still while I write.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

"Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things." - George Carlin

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Never rush to judgement because the truth is NEVER what it seems.

Interview with Raven Gulley, Author of A Bloody Goodbye

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write A Bloody Goodbye?

I wanted to write more drama within the club and introduce readers to Darcy's mother. This book is a setup of more things that are going to happen in the series later on.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love reading all genres!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I don't have any right now. I do hope to get back into reading after a few writing deadlines are at bay!

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The scene when Rose and Darcy finally make up!

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I have to word sprint when I'm writing. It's the only way I can get books finished.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

You only have one life so spend it doing things that make you happy.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Just because someone is an outlaw it doesn't make them a bad person!

Interview with Steven Vance Taylor, Author of The Uninvited

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Uninvited?

Originally, I thought of my time in The Uninvited as “an epic face plant at 100 miles-per-hour leaving a 30-yard skid mark ending two inches short of the finish line.”  A glorious failure. But as I reflected on the 20-year-old events, I quickly realized that everything I am, everything I have, everything I became was a direct result of my friends and I reaching out for something one-inch on the other side of impossible. The Uninvited was not my greatest failure. It was my greatest achievement.  And the book needed to be written.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Uninvited, what would they be?

"Is That Me" by The Uninvited. It's appropriate because I wrote it.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love biographies and fictional histories!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The first chapter when everything is going to hell.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

The book was written primarily in two time slots during the day: before work, 5am to 8am, or after everyone went to bed, 11pm to 2am. If you read carefully you can almost detect the underlying influence: coffee or alcohol.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

A foolish consistency is the hobgobblin of little minds.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Without revealing any spoilers, I would say that I hope people will rethink the scales they use to measure success.

Interview with Davinder Kaur, Author of Forced to Marry Him

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Forced to Marry Him: A Lifetime of Tradition and the Will to Break It?

In the late 1980s, I was forced to marry a man I didn't know. When I was only fourteen years old, the marriage was arranged and set to occur when I turned eighteen. After four long years of the engagement, I had two choices: adhere to the customs and traditions of my family, or risk bringing dishonor to my home. I didn't like either option, so I made a plan—a plan to survive.

In Forced to Marry Him: A Lifetime of Tradition and the Will to Break It, I tell of the pain, lies, and betrayal I suffered at the hands of those who were meant to protect me the most. But my story doesn't end there. I continue to speak out and fight - hopefully saving not only my life but the lives of many other women and young girls. I would like to think I offer courage and strength to those who can't advocate for themselves, and I work with organizations all over the world to help end child and forced marriages. To spread awareness on how many arranged marriages can really be forced marriages. I wish to give a voice to the voiceless, as I break down walls to eradicate cultural and traditional abuse.

I was inspired to write this book by wishing to give a voice to the voiceless and to offer hope and courage.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Forced to Marry Him: A Lifetime of Tradition and the Will to Break It, what would they be?

Don't You Want Me by Human League - this theme song would be for my character as I felt I was not wanted by my family.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

My favorite genre is fiction. It's actually not the same as my favorite genre to write which is non-fiction.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

The Rainbow Acres by Simrita Dhir; A Mindful Move by Kiran Prasad; Heir to Malla by Anna Bushi; War Of The Three Kings by Anna Bushi; Go Own Yourself by Kelly Bagla; and Go Legal Yourself by Kelly Bagla.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

When Auntie Jindie was slurping her tea, and gushing over it while gossiping with my mum about the arranged weddings that had been planned all around us.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Just a good night's sleep - that's essential!

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

My justice is spreading awareness.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

We have to be aware of what's happening in our neighborhoods. If you notice a girl has gone missing from school over the summer holidays, speak up about it. Perhaps she was taken to her home country to be married off while still a child herself.

Interview with Marc. B. DeGeorge, Author of The Reckless Rescue

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Reckless Rescue?

This is book two in the Origin Story series. I first dreamed up the idea of five friends going through an adventure with aliens way back when I was 16. At that time I was just daydreaming of a situation with my friends. Then I updated the idea and began developing the series.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Reckless Rescue, what would they be?

Great question! As a musician, I love to listen to music while I write, and for the Origin Story series, I listened to a lot of electronic music, especially drum & bass, or dubstep. I even created a public YouTube playlist to share with my readers. While I don't have a specific song for each character, one of my favorites is "Fatso" by Metrik. I always picture the aliens in the story dancing to it.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Yes! I have always loved SciFi, though I read a bit of everything these days.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Too many to list here! But here's a few: The Dispossessed by Ursula K. LeGuin, Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames, and Pattern Recognition by William Gibson.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I'm a sucker for the quiet moments that speak volumes in any story. There's one or two in The Reckless Rescue.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I'm allergic to cats (though I like them) so no cats. I think the one quirk is that I start writing exactly at 9pm every night. If I don't, I feel like I didn't do something right.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

On my website is a quote from one of my favorite writer/philosophers, Henry David Thoreau. He wrote "The Universe is wider than our views of it." I think that's a great quote because it is both exciting and humbling.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Three letters - F U N. This is pure entertainment, though there are themes. I just want readers to finish the book and think, "what a fun read."

Interview with Owen Lach, Author of Founder's Mercy

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Founder's Mercy?

I've wanted to write a story like Founder’s Mercy for a long time. I’ve been a sci-fi and fantasy fan since I was a kid, and I’ve always played around with different story ideas in my head. Founder's Mercy grew out of an idea to tell a coming-of-age story for a queer character who'd today's society would consider marginalized in an environment where they're mostly free to be who they are. It was important to have the main character's queerness be part of who they are without it being the story itself.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Founder's Mercy, what would they be?

Oh wow, this is a hard one. Adan's (the main character) theme song would probably be Real by JO1. Or maybe Greedy from Ariana Grande.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I read sci-fi and fantasy almost exclusively. Sometimes Young Adult/New Adult, but always speculative fiction. Founder's Mercy is my first novel and my first Young Adult sci-fi story. But I've written scripts and screenplays that were more general fiction.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I'm reading Victories Greater Than Death by Charlie Jane Anders right now. I love my tender space queers! Next up is probably A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers and Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The scene I enjoyed writing the most was in the first chapter, where the main character Adan and his best friend Bo go out and walk around the neighborhood. It's where I first set the scene of the story's primary location, and it was so much fun giving the readers their first taste of the book's setting.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I like listening to music while I write. I wrote Founder's Mercy listening to a playlist I made of songs from the Japanese boy band JO1.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Write what you love because you're gonna end up reading it a hundred times before it's finished.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

The main character wrestles with a lot of moral decisions that he’s not necessarily prepared to make. And it’s easy to go back and second guess all those. But it’s better just to make the best choices we can, accept the consequences, and learn as we go.

Interview with Annie Cabot, Author of Key Lime Garden Inn

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Key Lime Garden Inn?

I’ve been traveling to Captiva Island for the last twenty years. I always knew that I would write a story set on the island. I could see my main character, Maggie Wheeler, going through some difficult times and then settling on the island permanently.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Key Lime Garden Inn, what would they be?

Colbie Caillat – Brighter than the Sun.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Women's Fiction. I love to read about women who have overcome traumatic events in their life.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I'm reading Cindy Nichols Newport series currently.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Without a doubt, it was the scene with her witting at the beach alone, reading Anne Morrow Lindbergh's Gift from the Sea.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I've got a mini poodle who sits by my side as I write.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Know who you are and celebrate it.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I want to lift people up. I hope all my books do that for my readers. I love to be inspired myself, but I feel tremendous joy when I can inspire someone else.
