Interview with Lindsey Sparks, Author of Song of Scarabs and Fallen Stars

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Song of Scarabs and Fallen Stars?

Like so many of my story ideas, the idea for this book came to me in the shower! The main character, Tarset, is actually a side character from two of my other series. My readers have been asking for her to get her own story for years, and I think their enthusiasm simmered on the back burner in my mind until - suddenly - my muse struck me with an epic scene that became the climax of the story.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Song of Scarabs and Fallen Stars, what would they be?

Tarset - Bells in Santa Fe by Halsey; Atum - Killing Strangers by Marilyn Manson.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Definitely Urban Fantasy, though Dark Fantasy Romance has definitely been appealing to me lately.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Crescent City: House of Sky and Breath by Sarah J Maas, The Crown of Gilded Bones by Jennifer L Armentrout, A Touch of Darkness by Scarett St. Clair, Million Dollar Demon by Kim Harrison, and Electric Idol by Katee Robert.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

This is an impossible question! I have many! But I do think the climactic scene is so epic, and brutal, that I have to pick that one. It's where this story started, after all.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Not really. I'm a mom to two small children, so my writing time is extremely limited and I have to be very flexible. I wake up early and consider those two hours before the kids rise to be sacred writing time.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Be gentle with yourself.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

The astronomical pull between Tarset and Atum, and how inevitable they feel as a couple, despite the obstacles they still face. Also, the rich ancient Egyptian setting. 🙂

Interview with Crystal Daniels & Sandy Alvarez, Author of Salem: Fallen Ravens MC

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Salem, Fallen Ravens MC?

We wanted this new MC to have a darker, grittier, vibe and Salem, MA gave us the perfect setting for what we had in mind. One day we would love to visit Salem!

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Salem, Fallen Ravens MC, what would they be?

Salem: Unforgiven by Metallica, Sage: Leather and Lace by Stevie Nicks.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

We both love romance and a variety of tropes.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Crystal: Her Soul to Take by Harley Laroux.

Sandy: The Dead Guy Next Door by Lucy Score.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

All of chapter one!

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Crystal binge watches the Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Twilight trilogies for background noise when not listening to music.

Sandy prefers to work in silence.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

We can leave you with a couple of quotes we love. 'In the end, she became more than what she expected. She became the journey, and like all journeys, she did not end, she simply changed directions and kept going.' , 'She was born a beautiful soul, but she's a self-made badass.'

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

There is always something or someone in life worth fighting for. Never give up.

Interview with Blair Denholm, Author of Shot to the Heart

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Shot to the Heart?

Shot to the Heart is the fourth book in my crime fiction series, The Fighting Detective. In this one gritty cop Jack Lisbon briefly returns from Australia to his homeland, the United Kingdom, where he must face the demons and dangers he fled five years earlier. The reason for his trip is to be reunited with his daughter, Skye, whom he hasn’t clapped eyes on for five years. I’ve drawn some inspiration from the movie “Taken” starring Liam Neeson.

In the novel, I’ve tried to imbue Jack Lisbon with a warmer heart than readers are used to in the previous three books. If early reviews are anything to go by, I think I’ve achieved it to a large degree. One reader has personally emailed me with ideas for incorporating Jack’s daughter into future plots, and it’s certainly worth thinking about!

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Shot to the Heart, what would they be?

This is a great question! There is actually a YouTube playlist for my first novel, Kill Shot, right here. It features a selection of Jack’s favourite tracks. His mobile phone’s ringtone is the first song on that list – London Calling by The Clash. He’s an old school punk fan who later in life also comes to appreciate the beauty of classical music. As for his sidekick and partner Detective Constable Claudia Taylor, her theme song could be the Guns N’ Roses classic, “Patience”, considering the drama and anxiety Jack Lisbon puts her through on a daily basis.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

If you check out my profile on Goodreads, you’ll see my taste in books is eclectic with 171 books read and reviewed. One minute I’m reading crime and espionage thrillers, the next it’s literary fiction or old-school sci-fi. My only criterion for a good book is this – entertain me.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I’ve got a couple of books queued up on my Kindle, including a box set from The Freeman Files series by author friend Ted Tayler, and “Smugglers” by fellow Aussie writer Matt Rogers. On my bookshelf I’ve got “A Matter of Honour” by Jeffrey Archer, Paul Theroux’s “My Secret History” and Scott Turow’s “Pleading Guilty”.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

For some of the action scenes in this novel I had to research helicopters, Zodiac boats, and military-style tactical operations, lots of detail that was new to me on a technical level. I really enjoyed taking the knowledge I’d acquired and weaving it into an action-packed narrative.

Without giving too much away, there’s a frantic scene where Jack joins forces with highly-trained police officers to storm a farm-house on the Orkney Islands off the coast of Scotland. I guess that one was my favorite to write.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I keep a glass nick-nack on my monitor stand etched with a quote attributed to George Bernard Shaw. It says: Some see things as they are and ask, why? I dream of things as they never were and ask, why not?

Additionally, my little dog Bruno often sits beside me on a bench in my office while I write. My partner, Sandra, often jokes that Bruno is going to work when he comes to sit with me.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I’d like readers to feel like they’ve thoroughly enjoyed a few hours of adventure and escapism, with a twisty plot that makes them take a deep breath. And I hope they remember to sign up to my newsletter at the end of the last chapter.

Interview with Vella Munn, Author of Punish

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Punish?

Almost nothing angers me more than animal abuse. No creature deserves to be mistreated. Because I don’t want to risk my freedom by going after a perpetrator or perpetrators, I decided to rely on fiction. Punish is the first in the three-book thriller series I call Primal Justice. It revolves around a trio of huge grey dogs that do what civilized humans don’t dare. The dogs are ruled by primal justice.

There’s a romance in each story which means I put my heroes and heroines through emotional wringers. I wanted to challenge law abiding men and women to question their moral standards. The greys have their own code—one wedded to the ancient Hopi belief that all nature is sacred. (I’ve written nine Native American historicals so relying on traditional reverence made sense to me) The stories aren’t easy reads, but I believe the outcome will have readers applauding both the dogs and the couples.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I read a lot of non-fiction and true crime, a total switch from what I write.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Too many, with suspense as the primary theme.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Probably the first scene where a pair of men who run a puppy mill get what's coming to them.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Music in the background, mostly country/western.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

For me, peace comes from nature. That's where I can connect with myself.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

That there's no simple right or wrong.

Interview with Amy Quick Parrish, Author of The Frequency

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Frequency - False Flag?

This book actually started out as a television pilot that came about as a result of a screenwriting contest writing prompt. Contestants had to write the first fifteen pages of a script based on a logline: a teenage girl whose home is destroyed and sets out on a journey. I am a big fan of The Wizard of Oz and grew up with family lore of a horrible Easter Sunday tornado that destroyed my great-grandparents’ home in Michigan. I swirled in a dash of eclectic characters, a sprinkling of conspiracy, and I’m excited about these characters and this series.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I read a lot of non-fiction - often because I tend to write historical fiction and that helps me research.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

David Grohl’s new book. A book about John Lennon. My friend Christian Raymond just released a novel called Howl of the Ice, so I’m excited to read that. And I’m in the middle of the latest Outlander book.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I think my favorite scene to write was the scene in Emily’s grandmother’s house.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I often eat what my characters would eat. When I was writing my novels set in West Texas, I ate a lot of Tex-Mex food and barbecue. When I was writing a television pilot set in Scotland, I ate a lot of oatcakes and haggis. For this, I craved Vernors and Faygo Redpop - two “sodas” (we Michiganders call it “pop”) that can generally only be found in Michigan.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

César Chávez and Dolores Huerta put it best. “Sí se puede,” which means “Yes, (we) can!” There’s also a Don Quijote poster that reads “Creer es Poder,” which means, “To believe is to be able to.”

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

That’s hard because I don’t want to give any spoilers. I suppose “don’t make assumptions about people” could suffice?

Interview with Adriana Locke, Author of Flirt

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Flirt?

It's springtime in the US and I was craving something fun and steamy to read. Moss's character came alive in my head and I knew I HAD to write him!

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Flirt, what would they be?

I think their couple song is Still Be Friends by G-Eazy 😉

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love contemporary romance! I read it and write it and I just love, well, love.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I'm going on vacation soon and have all of Whitney G's recent books, a couple of Jodi Ellen Malpas stories, and one by Jessica Hawkins. I love her writing.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

There is a scene with the hero and heroine where two of his brothers come in the house at an inopportune time. That was fun for a few reasons! Ha!

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I have to write at my desk, no music or television, with a drink. Period. I can't do it any other way.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Love many, trust few, and always paddle your own canoe.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

How they felt while reading it. I aim to give readers an enjoyable experience away from the stresses of life. I hope they smile and feel happy while reading.

Interview with Jeffrey L Kohanek, Author of Wizardoms: A Sundered Realm

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Wizardoms: A Sundered Realm?

The warm reception of my bestselling Fate of Wizardoms series came with a reader demand for more from the characters they had grown to love. At the same time, there were many more stories to be told in that world, so I set out to write a follow up series. This is the 6th and final book in the Fall of Wizardoms series, concluding the second arc of a 12-book saga inspired by the likes of Wheel of Time, The Witcher, and The Lord of the Rings.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Wizardoms: A Sundered Realm, what would they be?

Dare you to move by Switchfoot.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Fantasy - mostly epic fantasy, which is why I write in the same genre.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

OMG. There are so many, my Kindle is ready to explode.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Comedic moments tend to be my favorites, but in this book, I had a lot of fun with an epic confrontation between the heroes and a mighty villain attempting to raise himself to godhood.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I rarely write at a desk. Instead, I write in a lounge chair, on a sofa, in an airplane, in a hotel room, or anywhere else I happen to go.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Believe, make an effort, and it'll all work out.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Hope is a valuable commodity. Hold onto it like a lifeboat amid stormy seas.
