Interview with Vella Munn, Author of Punish

12 Apr 2022

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Punish?

Almost nothing angers me more than animal abuse. No creature deserves to be mistreated. Because I don’t want to risk my freedom by going after a perpetrator or perpetrators, I decided to rely on fiction. Punish is the first in the three-book thriller series I call Primal Justice. It revolves around a trio of huge grey dogs that do what civilized humans don’t dare. The dogs are ruled by primal justice.

There’s a romance in each story which means I put my heroes and heroines through emotional wringers. I wanted to challenge law abiding men and women to question their moral standards. The greys have their own code—one wedded to the ancient Hopi belief that all nature is sacred. (I’ve written nine Native American historicals so relying on traditional reverence made sense to me) The stories aren’t easy reads, but I believe the outcome will have readers applauding both the dogs and the couples.

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I read a lot of non-fiction and true crime, a total switch from what I write.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Too many, with suspense as the primary theme.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Probably the first scene where a pair of men who run a puppy mill get what’s coming to them.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Music in the background, mostly country/western.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

For me, peace comes from nature. That’s where I can connect with myself.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

That there’s no simple right or wrong.
