Interview with Jesse Slade, Author of The SEAL and the Artist
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The SEAL and the Artist?
Hali and I have a very similar backstory. I wanted to write a positive story about surviving something awful, the impact of friendship, the power of love, and coming out whole on the other side of that.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The SEAL and the Artist, what would they be?
Falling In by Lifehouse for both of them. F**ckin' Perfect by Pink for Hali, and Why Don't You and I by Santana with Alex Band for Smoke
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I'll read most anything, but I'm in love with romance. I love almost all genres of romance...Steamy, Military, Light, Dark, Romantic Comedy, M|F, M|M, it doesn’t really matter to me, I just love good books!
My No Easy Day series is a military romance, following a team of Navy SEALs, but I’m also working out a story that has time travel and I’d love to write a romantic comedy someday.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
I have so many books on my TBR! I love finding new authors, especially indie authors who write great books but struggle to get them into readers hands. I have the same issue as a lot of people, more books on my TBR than I can read in my lifetime, but that's not going to stop me from adding to the ever growing pile!
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
I loved writing the last scene in the book. In addition to the steamy part, that scene shows how much Hali had overcome, how much more confidence she had in herself from where she started. Being able to wrap it up, giving Smoke and Hali their HEA was just the icing on the cake.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I always have coffee within reach. Sometimes, I have arguments with my characters who are not behaving the way I want them to! And I often discuss things with my two rescue dogs, who, luckily, always agree with my way of thinking!
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
Believe you can and you're halfway there.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
I hope they liked it and closed the book with a happy heart and a smile on their face.
