Alan Asnen on His Frank Gould Mystery Series

Everything I do is attached to my childhood.
— Jasper Johns

Recently, when I was getting paid regularly to write on MEDIUM, I ran a series called “BUT TELL IT SLANT: The Facts Behind the Fiction.” That ran over 4000 words alone. This, therefore, is only a taste in less than 500 words of that story which began the process of writing The Frank Gould Mystery Series, currently appearing in Volume Eight, When Viewed Through Pain (along with three volumes of short stories...let’s not forget those!).

Life is a mystery and I am not being immodest to say that only by sheer accident I’ve led, on occasion, one life that others have found thrilling. Happening to be caught “in the right place at the right moment” and meeting a large number of famous people along the way. For a long time, as a result, people were asking me to write a memoir.

When the time came, being a professional writer, I put my hand to the task.

Nothing happened.

Nothing connected these incidents and people, not enough to turn it into an interesting “story,” and you have to have a story.

Rather than allowing my work to wallow in failure I decided to do what some writers have done in the past. I turned it into fiction. And I made “me” a hero. Of sorts.

Frank Gould is not Alan Asnen, and, for the most part, the other main characters in the series are not the people I’ve met along the way. But many of the incidents are the real incidents of my life and your life (or “real life”) as it happened. Or they have been “massaged” in some fashion to make them prettier—or uglier—for the sake of better (I hope!!!) fiction.

Some, at least, think it is better. Others don’t get it at all. Let’s be fair, that’s how it works. As the sages of old have said, it’s all a matter of taste buds, bud.

However, since the first few books, I’ve pretty much left the “biography” behind—except in “flashbacky” snatches—and moved on to the continuation of “new” story. But...I haven’t been able to shake the “continuing” aspect. The “family” of characters and the overarching storyline doesn’t seem to want to be left behind. This seems to have become the “cozy” and “romantic” genre aspect of the work to a great extent. As opposed to the “hard-boiled” private eye that’s taking place simultaneously. As hard-boiled as Frank Gould ever gets, which isn’t very.

You have to be there…

Ovidia Yu and many others love the guy. I’m not sure why. I know plenty of people who hate him… He’s obnoxious, cantankerous, often a bit cynical and always, let’s face it, funny.

Interview with Jenn Lees, Author of The Crossing

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Crossing (Arlan's Pledge Book One)?

I had just finished reading The Song of Albion by Stephen R. Lawhead, which has a strong Celtic flavour. Brilliant series. I had lived in Scotland for some years but was living in Nairobi at the time and perhaps yearning for Scotland a wee bit. That series of novels just sent my imagination going. This was long before I wrote creatively.

There’s a hill behind a Scottish village where a friend of ours used to live. There are the ruins of an Iron Age Fort at the top of this hill, and in my imaginings, a wild looking Celtic-type warrior on a ginormous horse would come bursting through from another world. This was years ago, and this story has been percolating in my subconscious ever since.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Fantasy. I’ve always read fantasy, right from primary school age. I’ve never stopped reading it. I read other genres, but never feel as satisfied as when I’m in a fantasy story. And yes, I write fantasy. I have also written a time travel romance set in a futuristic Scotland in a dystopian setting… but really, it’s a fantasy.

I always have romantic elements in my storyline too. Got to have some romance going on. I have tried to write contemporary, but then everything turns out to be happening in a castle, and the heroine is a warrior and there’s magic and… wait! Now it’s a fantasy! So, I give in and write where my heart truly is.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

The Fool’s Quest Book Two of Fitz and the Fool by Robin Hobb. The Blinding Knife Book Two of Lightbringer by Brent Weeks. The Name of The Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. Portal Slayer Hidden Journey by my author friend S L Dooley.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Ooh, that’s a hard one. So many of them I enjoyed. That makes it sound like they were easy to write. None were easy. But I think my favourite was when Arlan meets Rhiannon at the Celtic Festival. It’s the first time the reader will see Arlan, our leading man, and I think he comes across quite impressively. Rhiannon thinks he is. The thing is though, and she doesn’t know it, but they’ve already met. Well, he’s met her, but she’s not met him…yet.

Yeah, portals opening to worlds at varying points on a timeline… it can do your head in. Arlan is cheeky and comes right up to Rhiannon and gives her a passionate kiss on the lips. She quite likes it, but she’s having a twinge of guilt, because, well, should she enjoy this so much from a perfect stranger? But Arlan leaves an impression on Rhiannon that will change everything.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

No, but I require total silence when I write. (Just ask my husband.)

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I believe we are creative beings made by a creative Being. So, I tap into that. I find I come most alive when I’m in the creating phase of writing. I try to encourage others to find where their particular creative gift/talent lies, and to go for it. You never know who or what you may find in the process.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

We all have a part to play. A special something that we do which will make this world better, even if it’s just for one other person. Some of us have bigger tasks. They may not be any more important, but perhaps more crucial to the times in which we live. But we all have something that’s just for us to do. And we shouldn’t be afraid to do it… we may discover we thrive on it, and it ends up being the best thing we could ever do with our lives.

Interview with Lindsay Buroker, Author of Hammered

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Hammered (Legacy of Magic, Book 1)?

I wrote ten books in my Death Before Dragons urban fantasy series with a talented, tall, and beautiful half-elf heroine. Elves are always popular in fantasy! But dwarves are usually the sidekicks. When it was time to write a spinoff series, I thought... let's do a half-dwarf this time. She's stout, strong, and attracts all the wrong guys (some with tusks). She's been a fun departure from those elfy types. 🙂

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Hammered (Legacy of Magic, Book 1), what would they be?

Haha, I've been doing an Alanis Morissette bike workout repeatedly while working on this series (apparently, you're supposed to take writing breaks to exercise regularly), so I'll say "Hand in my Pocket" for my heroine.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I enjoy both science fiction and fantasy with some romance mixed in, and, yes, it's what I like to read too.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I'm trying The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy on the recommendation of a friend.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

When she's fleeing from the police (not her fault, really!), Matti ends up spending the night in the rather magical house of the elf assassin who's the only person willing to help her right now. It has a lot of magical gizmos that she doesn't know how to work, and she ends up losing her temper and destroying a few things...

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I write on my laptop and rarely at a desk, so I often end up with a dog head slung across my arm or the keys. This can make things a little challenging.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

People aren't always what they seem. 🙂

Interview with Sarah Hualde, Author of A Raven Remix

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write A Raven Remix?

I love music and paranormal cozies. While talking plots out with my kids, this book, and the entire series, unfolded. Why not write a cozy where songs from the 60s to the 2000’s are clues? It sounded like fun. So, I took on the Paranormal Penny Mystery Series.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of A Raven Remix, what would they be?

Trouble ls a Friend by Lenka is Penny’s theme. 100% In fact, if I get blocked I play it on repeat until the story comes to me.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love mysteries and paranormal suspense. So I’ve mixed them up and write paranormal cozies. One day I may tackle Sci-Fi… maybe.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

My TBR pile is almost as large as my To Be Written pile. Right now, it’s An Affair to Dismember, Swamp Spirits, Southern Spirits, and Medium Over Easy. And that’s just the fiction books.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I love whenever the Raven pops up in my mysteries. That means the fun is about to begin. Then again, any scene with the Whovian T.C. is enjoyable to write.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I love coffee mugs and sharpies. When I’m plotting I’ll often buy a fresh set of Sharpies and recently have started designing coffee mugs to match my work in progress. All in the name of inspiration.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

If I had a motto it would be Hang on tight. The journey is dangerous but the destination is worth it.

Interview with C.E. Clayton, Author of Symbiotech

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Symbiotech: An Eerden Novel (Ellinor Book 3)?

Since Symbiotech is the third book in the Ellinor series, I’ll speak more generally to the reasons why this series was one I really wanted to write. After I finished writing my YA series, I really wanted to explore a twist on the kind of revenge and redemption arc that was/is so popular for a lot of fantasy main characters, especially female MC’s. I wanted to tie those themes in with the grief that so often gets ignored for the pure revenge aspects of the trope and plot line, especially in YA fiction.

Grief and mourning present themselves in so many different ways, and for me, a lot of my grief usually stays in that “anger” stage for a very long time. My anger, sorrow, and unhappiness during my periods of grief always made me feel really unlikeable, when in reality I was simply hurting and I couldn’t make people understand that. I wanted to explore that further with my main character, Ellinor. Revenge became her whole personality, her grief all-consuming, and it made her hard to love, but that didn’t mean she was undeserving of it.

Over the course of the series, Ellinor learns that just because she suffered a terrible loss, her life doesn’t have to be over. She still has friends and a chance at more than just living to die for her vengeance. At its core, my Ellinor series, and especially Symbiotech, is a story focused on second chances, of still being worthy of life and love even with depression and going through intense grief.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Symbiotech: An Eerden Novel (Ellinor Book 3), what would they be?

I make so many playlists for my books that of course my main characters have a theme song! I love having readers have access to my playlists and having them pull their own meaning from the songs. I’ll list out the theme songs of my characters, and then you tell me why you think those fit them once you meet them all! Ellinor: “Can’t Go to Hell” by Sin Shake Sin Kai: “My Blood” by Twenty One Pilots Jelani: “Lion” by Saint Mesa Fiss: “Kintsugi” by Gabrielle Aplin.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love a good science-fantasy (think things like Star Wars, The Locked Tomb series, or Arcane)! I’m not huge into hard science fiction, and I tend to like fantasies that are a little more grounded without being complete urban fantasies.

Science fantasy often mixes advanced technology with magic, and I love to both read and write in that genre. I used to write strictly YA fantasy, but as I’ve grown as a writer, I’ve started to appreciate more and more the freedom and unique story elements science fantasy allows me to explore.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

My TBR pile is embarrassingly long. The sheer number of unread books I own but haven’t had a chance to read yet is staggering, but pretty par for the course of any booknerd. My current TBR for the upcoming month of December though consists of 3 books. One I’ve owned forever and just haven’t started, a series I am very close to finishing, and a fellow indie author’s book. Can you guess which is which? A Court of Thorns and Roses, A Conjuring of Light, and Bloodsworn.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I don’t want to spoil anything, but there is a scene with a sentient robot of sorts in Symbiotech that was my favorite to write. It was one of those scenes that I loved because it reached back to an early 2000’s time when we all had embarrassing screen names and gamer handles online, and the annoying characters we dealt with during that time. I was half expecting to cut the scene, as sometimes it’s more fun for me than it is my readers, but my beta readers and my editors all independently burst out laughing during the scene and the introduction of this particular character. It made me so happy that a scene that I personally loved because of its ridiculousness was something that everyone else really enjoyed, too. So that was by far my favorite scene to write.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I don’t know how quirky it is, as I don’t have a lucky mug or any sort of writing superstitions I stick to, but I can’t write in silence. I need hours and hours of music going constantly in order to stay focused and write. It’s not wordless music either, it’s usually a playlist of some kind, with words, that match the mood or vibe of the particular emotional beat I’m writing. But I cannot listen to audiobooks or podcasts when writing. While music with lyrics is perfect for me, anything else doesn’t work for me and I end up listening more to the podcast than I would actually writing my book.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

My mottos to “live” by tend to change a lot with the phases of my life, so I haven’t had one I’ve stuck to for my entire life. However, the current one I try to follow the most (and also happens to be a recent bookish tattoo quote from my favorite book, Gideon the Ninth) is “Death First to Vultures and Scavengers”. It’s a little hostile, but that’s the place I’m at in my life now, where I guard my emotional resources and boundaries very aggressively and I won’t tolerate those people who look to either take advantage of me while I am at a weak point, or people looking to pick away at my mental energy.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I want readers to walk away remembering that it is never too late to start over or change directions. That having only one chance to get something right or to be in love, is a myth. It’s a lesson that my main character has spent years learning, because it’s one that I spent years learning myself.

Interview with Sharon Ward, Author of Killer Storm

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Killer Storm?

While I was looking for an idea for the fourth Fin Fleming Scuba Diving book, I was scrolling through old pictures of dive trips for inspiration. I came across an old photo of one of the divemasters at a resort we'd stayed at. He'd been securing the boats ahead of the storm, but the storm had caught up to him. He was running back from the pier, racing to the shore, with the storm nipping at his heels. Instantly, I said "That's Fin trying to outrace the danger." You can see what it looks like on the cover of Killer Storm.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love mysteries and thrillers, although I don't like gore or serial killers. I love female protagonists who are adept at self-rescue.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Michaels Connolly's Desert Star, Rhys Bowen's latest Royal Spyness, and Marc Greaney's ninth Gray Man novel, One Minute Out.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The scene with Chico the rooster. You'll have to read the book to see why it was so much fun, but I really enjoy writing scenes with animals in them. I also love writing the dive scenes.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I like to have my dog Molly beside me or sitting on my feet.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I've always believed it's better to make a decision and act, than it is to allow yourself to get paralyzed by trying to evaluate all the options. I was recently watching Top Gun: Maverick and the Tom Cruise character says to one of his team members "Don't think. Just do." I really liked it, although I think a little thinking before taking action is good. It's just when too much thinking grinds your process to a halt that it's bad.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Fin puts family and friendship above business. She treats everyone the same, regardless of their "status" and I think we should all strive to emulate that attitude.

Interview with Wm M Crouch, Author of Do You Remember Me?

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Do You Remember Me??

The first chapter I wrote was one of the last chapters in the book. It started as a journal entry about life's regrets. Lost loves, career short comings, and loss of faith. What kept developing in the story was a cry for love and acceptance. The final realization in this journey of discovery for me was the critical elements of "self-love."

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Do You Remember Me?, what would they be?

Everlong, Foo Fighters; The Rain Song, Led Zepplin; Smells Like Teen Spirit, Nirvana

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Coming of Age. I can write romance but it always turns into a coming-of-age story. Love is dependent upon experiences. Experiences are what we learn in "coming of age."

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Several teachings on Buddhism. Silas House, Clay's Quilt. Prodigal Summer, Barbara Kingsolver. The Four Winds, Hannah Kristin.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

A Walk In the Snow.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Nope. Just bad habits, like procrastination. When I know its time to write my office gets a thorough cleaning.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Renewed in Mind. Renewed in Body. Renewed in Spirit.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Before you can love another, you must first love yourself.
