Interview with Kate Golden, Author of A Dawn of Onyx

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write A Dawn of Onyx?

I have always loved storytelling, I have developed films and television series for work over the last seven years and was always drawn to love stories and fantastical world building. I read A Court of Thorns and Roses, then Outlander, then the Plated Prisoner series all within the summer of 2021, and then I could not, for the life of me, find a book to scratch that itch. So my fiance encouraged me to try writing what it was I wanted to read so desperately!

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love any kind of romance, though I personally need some kind of plot to keep me hooked. Of course, fantasy with a good love story is my favorite, but I also like a juicy murder mystery!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I have never read the Throne of Glass series. I keep telling myself I'll read it when I get a break from work and writing and neither of those things are happening anytime soon so I think I just need to bite the bullet!

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Impossible to chose only one, but Arwen and Kane meeting for the first time in the dungeon felt like it just fell right out of my head!

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I can only write to my favorite movie, tv show, and video game soundtracks!

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

"Take it easy, it's just life." I'm kidding. (But not really) I'm a little type A and can put a lot of pressure on myself. So, as often as I can, I try to remember to take each day as it comes and enjoy the ride.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

That being afraid, or struggling through something does not make you weak. It takes even more strength to do the thing that scares you or makes you uncomfortable! Also, consent and respect is just as sexy as possessive, dark, villainous behavior! We can have both!

Interview with Beth Benatti Kennedy, Author of Career ReCharge

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Career ReCharge?

Beyond my professional experiences with resilience and burnout, I had a personal reason for writing this book. My dad was an incredible entrepreneur and leader, and customers loved him, but he was also a classic workaholic. Although he managed to squeeze in time for those he loved, his mental and physical health took a hard hit from his nonstop dedication and hardworking personality. I will never know if he would still be alive today if his workaholism had been addressed and he had had a toolbox for handling the constant stress he had as a business owner.

Where does the idea for the Benatti Resiliency Model® originate from?

Several years ago, as I coached employees in a company that had been acquired, I observed differences between those with career resilience and those who were thrown off by the transition. The individuals with career resilience were able to navigate much more effectively through the process. They drove their careers, made the choice to not let the acquisition ‘ruin’ their lives, and found opportunities even in a challenging situation. I identified five common strategies that these resilient people possessed as part of their career toolbox. I turned these strategies into my Benatti Resiliency Model® and it is now one of the cornerstones of my leadership coaching practice and training classes.

As a leadership coach and speaker, what’s one piece of advice you would give someone looking to enter the same profession?

Whether it’s as a coach or a speaker, focus on your brand and your niche, or you won’t be authentic and you won’t be successful. For example, I’m most effective as a coach when working with someone who is passionate about making a difference in their career. Conversely, I don’t do well if someone just wants coaching to be promoted.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

On my list are:

-Influence Is Your Superpower: The Science of Winning Hearts, Sparking Change, and Making Good Things Happen by Zoe Chance.

-The Earned Life: Lose Regret, Choose Fulfillment by Marshall Goldsmith—we’re reading this in my Mastermind group.

-Navigating Polarities: Using Both/And Thinking to Lead Transformation by Brian Emerson and Kelly Lewis.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Before I sit down to write, I always do a seven-minute meditation. I have a lucky mug with a fish design that was handmade by a local potter and our golden retriever, Maple, at my feet. I also have a good supply of index cards in different colors on hand—I use them to brainstorm ideas.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

“Saying no is saying yes to what you really want.” This is counter-intuitive to a lot of my clients, who think that saying no will have a negative impact on their careers, but it’s important to be able to let go of ideas and tasks and obligations that divert your energy away from your purpose and passion.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I’d want them to remember my Friday 5 strategy and what it represents, which is that resilience is a process that takes place daily and in increments. It’s easy when life gets challenging to head down the burnout escalator, but you can take small steps to reverse direction.

Interview with D. M. Almond, Author of Trollin'

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Trollin' -or- The Life & Times of Kwajo Vance, Troll?

The story centers around a troll who has been raised by humans but is now thrust into the wider world. I had this idea of a world that formed around a celestial dragon that went into hibernation and wondered who would populate those lands. What kind of adventures would they get up to? This troll Kwadjo (Quay-Joe) took charge of those adventures. He's the unlikely hero that world needs to rely on to save them.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Trollin' -or- The Life & Times of Kwajo Vance, Troll, what would they be?

I'd say Metric - Risk for Kwadjo, though I'm sure he'd dig the Cure too & IAMX - Happiness for Baddigan. She's an industrial fan as well.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Fantasy. I love nothing more than losing myself in another world where magic is alive and fantastical creatures abound.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

My TBR pile is massive, but the top layer right now is: The Thousand Deaths of Ardor Benn, World Without End, The Hod King, The Stand (reread), and Echo Burning.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I enjoyed writing the scene where Kwadjo's mother is in the tavern listening in on some unruly badgers having a laugh. Also, really enjoyed Kwadjo's scene where he casts his first spell.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I like to yodel on my rooftop before I sit down to write for the day. Kind of. I mean I don't actually yodel. And my roof is too steep to stand on. But I do sit down to write each day.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

"Waka waka waka" - F. Bear Esq.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

It's not easy being green.
