Introducing T.R. Magnus: Epic Progression Fantasy Author

My name is Theophilus Monroe. Perhaps you’ve heard of me. I’ve written and published over fifty urban and paranormal fantasies. Titles like The Legacy of a Vampire Witch, The Legend of Nyx, The Blood Witch Saga, The Vilokan Asylum of the Magically and Mentally Deranged, and The Chronicles of Zoey Grimm are some of my better-known series.

My interest in paranormal fantasy began with authors like Anne Rice and Jim Butcher. However, growing up, I read a lot of epic fantasy. I still do. I love the legends like J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. I’m also a fan of authors like Brandon Sanderson and R.A. Salvatore. Lately, I’ve been reading a lot of progression fantasies like Will Wight’s Cradle series, Shirtaloon’s He Who Fights with Monsters, and Tao Wong’s A Thousand Li.

After devoting the better part of the last three years to urban fantasies, I decided to branch out.

I’m a full-time author. This isn’t a hobby. As I often tell my wife, most of my friends are people I’ve made up. I spend most of my time in worlds that don’t really exist.

I’m always coming up with new ideas, new worlds with unique magical systems. Some of these ideas are better vehicles for storytelling than others. Urban fantasy is a great genre—but some stories require a whole new world, a place with different magic and rules, different species.

For the last year or so I’ve been entertaining a story, a world and a system, that I couldn’t shake. It screamed at me in the shelves of my mind, begging to be born.

I needed a new genre. Urban fantasy is great, but it wouldn’t work with this story.

I settled on “epic progression fantasy.”  What is “progression fantasy?” It’s a term you may or may not be familiar with. It’s a cousin of LitRPG. Like a character in a video game, the heroes in progression fantasies start out weak. They gain strength over time, they “progress” through various levels or stages until (in some books) they reach near-divinity. It’s also closely related to xianxia (translation: Immortal Heroes), a Chinese genre where characters undergo trials, meditation, or training to become transcendental beings.  Progression fantasies, like Kataklysm, are westernized adaptations of the same.

What I love about progression fantasies is that every book opens up a new world of possibility for the hero. The hero gets stronger, so do the hero’s adversaries. Technically, “progression” fantasies can be urban fantasies or high fantasies and epics. There are also progression science fiction stories out there. Good stuff. “Progression” isn’t so much a genre of its own as it is a particular character arc that can fit in a variety of genres.

Writing in this genre also required a different voice. My Urban fantasies are written in the first-person. They feature snarky heroes/heroines. I needed a different persona, someone who represented the new “voice” I discovered as I fashioned my new story.

Thus, T.R. Magnus was born.  Yeah, he’s still me. Don’t tell anyone.  Check out the pseudo-fictional profile for T.R. Below:

T.R. Magnus is the elven half-brother of the urban and paranormal fantasy author Theophilus Monroe. Unlike his brother, T.R. writes immersive epics and cultivation/progression fantasies. He enjoys creating expansive worlds, unique magical systems, and plots that favor the unfavored. T.R. goes by T.R. because Thranduil Ravavaris is hard to say.

T.R.’s favorite color is plaid. Ketchup is his favorite condiment. He enjoys polka music.

I know what you’re thinking. Polka music? Really. I’m not a big fan, but T.R. loves it. I have to admit, it’s kind of catchy. It grows on you. Give it a shot.

T.R.’s newest series—Kataklysm—is now live on Amazon and Kindle Unlimited with the first volume, Blightmage.

Kataklysm is best considered an epic progression fantasy—but there are a few “sci-fi” elements that emerge as the gods of Ashathar are exposed and revealed for who/what they are.

What if the gods were experimenting on the world? Every three thousand  years, wiping the slate clean through apocalyptic disaster.  In Ashathar, a cycle of Kataklysms has reduced the world to just a few resilient “pathwalkers” who were forced to adapt and evolve to survive.

As Ashathar’s sun failed, reduced to a “red dwarf,” darkness and blight consumed the world. The only hope for survival are the Lightweavers, pathwalkers who’ve ascended to a higher form of being, who can harness the power of light, channeling it into spires that make survival possible. Only a few true Lightweavers have ascended so far and, as it often goes, when only a few hold such power, such power corrupts.

Enter two unlikely heroes:

Blaike is a miner. Born among the blighted, he’s not allowed to pursue the path. Instead, he’s forced to work the mines to harvest sunstone that the Lightweavers need to power the spires. When he discovers a large deposit of sunstone, he’s betrayed by his taskmasters who seek to take credit for the discovery themselves. Exiled and on the run, Blaike must find his own path in the blight.

Ming Yue is the daughter of a Lightweaver and an accomplished brewer of elixirs. As the second-born, she’s also forbidden from following the path. When her brother is abducted by the blighted, she might be her clan’s only hope to produce a Lightweaver for the next generation. Until a mangled and unconscious man is found in the blight. Is this boy really her brother? Or, does he an imposter, placed on the Lightweaver path in her brother’s stead. Is he a friend or an enemy?  If he’s not her brother, where is he? Can Ming Yue save him from his blighted captors?

Will our hero and heroine succeed? Are they the answer to saving Ashathar from tyranny? Or, are they merely subjects in a divine experiment, puppets manipulated by gods? Are the gods friendly or are they the real tyrants?

Check it out!  Get lost in a new world. You might even survive—if you can muster up the courage and resilience to follow the path.

The Story Behind One Bossy Date by Nicole Snow

The Story Behind One Bossy Date by Nicole Snow

The best kind of love gets awkward, messy, and unexpected. It's all of that and infinitely more in my latest grumpy-sunshine meets enemies-to-lovers office romance, One Bossy Date.

Our story begins with trouble in paradise—literally—when upbeat and overstressed Piper Renee's luxurious trip to Lanai, Hawaii gets interrupted by a nightmare come true. An intruder in her hotel room. In the shower. And when she musters up the courage to confront him, what a mystery man she finds.

Brock Winthrope is huge, gruff, and entirely out of patience for the problems slapping him in the face that make running a hotel empire difficult. The mishap which caused him to barge into this poor woman's life completely naked is one more. Still, when he finds out she's an influencer, he can't have Winthrope International getting shredded with the scandalous goose egg review from hell.

So he decides to make it up to her. After some major groveling, Brock whisks her away on a tour of the island and an anti-date with a flaring attraction neither of them expect.

They weren't supposed to enjoy their time together.

That kiss definitely wasn't planned.

And just when they're sure it's a bittersweet memory and they'll never see each other again—Piper crashes into her new boss and gets the shock of her life.

This book is bantery catnip loaded with laughs that'll split sides and enough spicy lovin' on the pages to keep your pulse drumming. But it's got a serious edge glinting with questions about life, romance, and destiny.

What happens when the perfectly unexpected person is the one you can't have? And what the hell do you do when fate keeps throwing that person in your face?

You know how to find out. And once you've absorbed every bit of this emotional, steamy, and girthy roller coaster ride, I'm confident you'll walk away with a smile and an extra flutter in your step. Dive right into One Bossy Date today. It's free with Kindle Unlimited!

Interview with Henry Olek, Author of A Few Murders in My Neighborhood

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write A Few Murders in My Neighborhood?

I've made a wonderful living in Hollywood as a screenwriter/producer. Yet when my favorite (and most optioned) screenplay A Few Murders in the Neighborhood never became a film -- I decided to take the bull by the horns and wrestle it into a NOVEL. Wasn't easy but I'd had a little practice with my very first screenplay, which did become a film, A Different Story, and Ballantine Books asked me to turn it into a novel.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of A Few Murders in My Neighborhood, what would they be?

Underdogs by Chris Young and Outside by Taylor Swift.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

A great mystery with well developed characters and HUMOR.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

The Maid by Rita Prose. Crossroads by Johnathan Franzen. A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

You're asking me to choose between my children. The scene that I'm writing is always my favorite.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Writing itself is quirky and addictive and doesn't stop.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Trust Yourself. William Goldman said it best: Nobody knows anything.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

GO FOR IT. NOW.

Interview with Hazel Lane, Author of Staying Broken

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Staying Broken (Single Dads Club)?

All of my books come from me so the stories ALWAYS have bits of actual events that I have been a part of sprinkled throughout. I have a lot of friends and many of them happen to be single parents or have been single parents for a time. I thought it would be fun to write a series about a Single Dads Group who kind of help each other navigate that world.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I LOVE reading Contemporary Romance of all kinds. My love for reading it inspired me to write it. As I read books in this genre, I found myself dreaming up ideas for books of my own. I've been writing for most of my life and romance just seems to flow naturally from me.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Currently, I'm reading All Your Perfects. I just finished up It Starts with Us, The Golden Couple, and What Happened to the Bennetts.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I am a Contemporary Romance junkie so for me it was the fire between Avery and Kendra when they first met. I think many of us have experienced that feeling and it's fun to put it on paper.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Two things I absolutely love are dogs and coffee. I have a lot of coffee mugs with different sayings that usually reflect my mood that day so choosing my mug before I start writing is a bit of a quirky habit lol. My dogs need to be around me. They bring me comfort, so it feels good to write with them near me.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Sure, I have a couple. Once I figured out that the only thing we can really control is ourselves and our own actions; life got much easier for me. Secondly, don't let anybody steal your joy. Life is too short to let others bring us down. Make it a point to control your own joy and do the the things you love.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

If they loved it, they should read the next one. All of my books are stand alone but written as part of a series, so side characters that you liked in one book may just make an appearance as a main character somewhere in the series.

Interview with Ryan G. Murphy, Author of Gingered

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Gingered: A Memoir?

This project started in late 2020, fresh on the heels of COVID-19, when we all didn’t know where we were allowed to go, who we were supposed to be, and when we’d experience genuine connection again. I started writing—on Instagram—short, true (sometimes funny) stories from my life. And people liked them. So I kept writing—for close to 200 days straight without stopping. I connected with people I hadn’t seen in years. People laughed. They shared their own memories with me. I felt human again. Then something magical happened. We began to help people we didn’t even know. I came up with the idea for “Writing for Good” and promised that for every Instagram interaction on one of my stories, I would donate a few cents of my own money to a charity every 30 days. The “likes” and “shares” piled up and every month I made a donation. I never once asked readers for money and yet every single month, one of you would match or exceed the donation to double or even triple it. I couldn’t believe it. These stories were making a difference—a real difference. We ended up raising a few thousand dollars for various causes and I experienced how powerful storytelling can be.

That’s when a few people in my life gave me the courage and confidence to turn the “Writing for Good” stories into a longer book. My friend and mentor, Sue Salvemini, metaphorically slapped me across the face and said: “Murph, the damn thing is already written. Just go put it together and publish it.” I suppose that was all I needed to hear.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Gingered: A Memoir, what would they be?

Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley. It's a song that's made millions of people laugh and it's written by a redhead - everything I can hope for from my book.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Humor / Memoir / Satire & Who doesn't like a little mystery in their life? I love to write (and find humor in) the truth.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Even though I've read my own book 1,000 times while editing, I've yet to read it from cover to cover in print form so I mean I have to do that, right?

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

My favorite stories are: The Hoods, Roller Magic, Roomba and Raspberry. I love bringing memories and characters to life from various eras of my life.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

My writing process starts with a period of self loathing, procrastination, and stress eating. Then I'll panic, figuring I'll never amount to anything in my life, which is usually enough to get me to sit down and stare at the blinking cursor. Then I'll give up and go for a 3-4 mile walk with my dog, which will tire us both out so then I'll go to sleep. I'll wake up the next day and repeat. It's great! I love writing!

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Yes. And I can't stress this enough. If you've reached the point of no return in having to go to the bathroom, don't just assume you can hold it a little bit longer. You can't.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

You are not alone. There are so many universal human experiences that bind us together and yet we all live in willful ignorance of that reality and just assume we are alone. We're all going through similar things. Life is hard. Let's laugh about it together a little bit.

Interview with Eric Kruger, Author of Trapped

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Trapped?

I love action-adventure movies and games and came up with a character that I thought would be relatable. Most action heroes are over the top and near perfect. Not Drake!

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I read thrillers and try not to read in my own genre (which is Sci-Fi/near future).

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Currently reading Winter World from AG Ridle, and I'm working my way through Jack Reacher, the Jack Carr books as well as the Orphan X series.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Can't recall, but I remember reading the first draft and having a few laughs and a few "did I write that?" moments.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

No, I'm pretty boring and work like about my writing, sitting down everyday at the same time to write.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

"We're all just monkeys in space" - Eric Kruger

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Interview with LM Fox, Author of Mr. Second Best

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Mr. Second Best?

What if the love of your life, belonged to your best friend? My debut into writing was a romantic suspense entitled, The Deprivation Trilogy. Mr. Second Best is an interconnected standalone that picks up where the series ended, focusing on two side characters. Melanie is a widow with two children and George “Huggie” Hughes is a firefighter who has been a family friend for many years. Her husband was Huggie’s best friend. He feels it’s his duty to look out for the family his friend left behind, but this is complicated. Because he’s secretly been in love with her for years. He’s tried to get past it to no avail. But he feels he can’t act on it without disrespecting his departed friend. It’s a story of love after loss, second chances, and unrequited love.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Mr. Second Best, what would they be?

The song that went through my head the most is The Loneliest by Maneskin.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love the witty banter in enemies to lovers or grumpy sunshine contemporary romance. And yes, it’s my favorite to write.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Ha… Holiday rom coms. I usually love the deep, angsty ones. But taking a break and indulging in lighter romance over the holidays.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The wedding. Hands down my favorite chapter ever written.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I need to be free of familiar voices, but can’t write when it is too quiet. I do most of my writing in a Panera restaurant.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Yes: Ask, believe, receive, and be immensely thankful, for all is possible when we live in gratitude and joy.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

There is always room for a new beginning.
