Behind the Scenes: A Centenarian’s Journey: From Covered Wagon to Buzz Bombs to Bald Eagles
Behind the Scenes: A Centenarian’s Journey: From Covered Wagon to Buzz Bombs to Bald Eagles?
Virginia Foley Reynolds, my mother, used to say her life was divided into four parts: the early years at her home in Minneapolis, the World War II period when she was a Red Cross volunteer in England, the decades she and husband Jack spent raising their five children, and the Golden Years, after we all left. Luckily for us, she filled several notebooks with observations and memories and sketches that recount so delightfully all of these periods except the years she spent raising us. My siblings and I can only imagine that we tired her out so badly while we were young that she had no energy to write during that time. However, the stories from the other periods in turn entertain, instruct, warn, amuse, and advise, but they always remind us of the wise and courageous people who came before. Virginia lived between the years of 1918 until her death in 2020, and that time in American history encompassed the very final westward-bound covered wagon, the discovery of penicillin, the buzz bombs of World War II, and so much more.
The very first complete memory I have takes place in a small kitchen in Grand Rapids, Michigan, somewhere around 1952, well after World War II ended. My mother is making dinner, and I sit on a stool hearing, for the very first time, the stories that appear in my mother’s book. Her adventures enthrall me, make me laugh, and sometimes terrify me enough to send shivers of fear down my three-year-old spine as I worry about bombs falling from the sky and perhaps landing on my parents (there were a few things I didn’t quite understand yet). Even now, all these many decades later, the same stories still move and affect me deeply. To me, that’s the sign of a great story–one that you can read or hear over and over and still feel surprise or amazement even when you know how it ended. Those afternoons in our kitchen taught me that my mother was, first and foremost, a story teller, an accomplished weaver of words.
Editors like to look for themes in a memoir, something readers can take away and keep forever. I see in these works a pattern of quiet courage simmering just under the surface. She writes of a relative who bid goodbye to her family and left them forever so they wouldn’t contract typhoid. She tells of an English priest and his parishioners during the war who all refused to run from church even as Nazi bombs fell. She considered herself wimpy, but night after night during the war she went to bed afraid–and yet, she never once asked for a safe transfer home. These stories are not about famous people (although three or four are mentioned). These are stories about average people living their lives and trying so hard to overcome their terror and be brave.
Virginia Foley Reynolds wrote the way she spoke. You might never have met the people in her book, but you know them all. Her writings illustrate the good she saw in everyone, and they very much reflect her times.

Interview with W. Bradford Swift, Author of Rainforest Shaman
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Rainforest Shaman?
The story behind my book, Rainforest Shaman, finds its roots in an interview I conducted in 1995 with John Perkins, who co-founded The Pachamama Alliance. His tales of immersive journeys into the Ecuadorian rainforest left a deep impression on me, igniting a spark of longing to embark on a similar adventure. However, life took me on different paths, and the dream was tucked away as I settled into a new phase in North Carolina with my young daughter.
Decades later, while doing research for my next eco-fantasy novel that I wanted to take place in the rainforests, I stumbled upon my old article about John. The timing was poignant, as I had recently been diagnosed with cancer. This wake-up call reignited my yearning for the rainforest and spurred a newfound determination to live my dream. Embracing a holistic approach to healing, I finally undertook the transformative journey that had been calling me for years. This convergence of personal healing and creative fulfillment is intimately woven into Rainforest Shaman, making it not just a book, but a testament to transformation and resilience, inked with my very heart and soul.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Rainforest Shaman, what would they be?
Love Song To The Earth which was written by Paul McCartney And Natasha Bedingfield in 2015.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
It’s always been a combination of science fiction and fantasy since I was introduced to reading for pleasure by my next door neighbor who was a children’s librarian. Most recently that has evolved to include visionary fiction and eco-fiction or eco-fantasy. And yes, these are the genres that I write in.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
The Forever Sea, Greenwood, The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, and Finding Your Way in a Wild New World. Oh, and The Artist Way. I pulled an old copy off of my bookshelf and started reading it again.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
Wow! Good question. There were many. I have to be careful to not include any spoilers.
The two that jump to my mind, is when teenage shaman-in-training, Iya, accompanies her grandfather shaman to the sacred waterfall in preparation for the start of her visionquest. The other one is what preceded it when Iya is at the river washing her hair when Matita and Namia discover her secret.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
Up until very recently it was taking breaks to walk with my dog around the neighborhood communing with the trees. It’s a great way to clear the mind and recharge. Unfortunately, Argos, my constant canine companion for the past twelve years passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on May 24th so I’m presently walking alone.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
Yes, a few. One related to health is ‘first do no harm’ which I learned my first day in veterinary school at the University of Georgia.
The second is that ‘anything and everything can be resolved through communication.” My wife and I have practiced that for the last 33 years. It’s worked well so far. And what shapes me as a person and author is my desire to inspire people to experience the sacred interconnectedness of all life.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
I hope the book in some small way helps to inspire the reader to pause and notice the incredible life all around them. That could be the first step to them experiencing the sacred interconnectedness of all life.

Interview with Jeremiah Cain, Author of A Plague of Hatred
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write A Plague of Hatred: The Encroaching Chaos?
I've been working on Perdinok for several years, and the world has become rather intricate. I, of course, chose not to explain all the complexities of it in this first book, but I needed to know it so I could give readers a fully developed world. With a complete understanding of this fantasy realm, I could slowly unravel its details without any inconsistencies, not only in this book but also in those to come.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
My reading list has a lot of variety. I usually stick to genres like grimdark and epic fantasy, but sometimes branch out to urban fantasy or horror--writers like Anne Rice and Clive Barker are favorites. Occasionally, some science fiction finds its way in as well.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
My To Be Read list is so expansive that it's almost embarrassing to admit, haha. But I'm pretty certain my next read will be Mark Lawrence’s Prince of Thorns.
Booklife Reviews (which is part of Publishers Weekly) said that readers who enjoy my work will also likely enjoy Joe Abercrombie and Mark Lawrence; therefore, since I like my own book, I figured their works would appeal to me. I'd read Abercrombie before but somehow hadn't gotten around to Mark Lawrence until the review prompted me to take a look. Now that I have seen his work, I am convinced it is something I will enjoy.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
My favorite scene to write was the one involving the Harpies. While I don't want to give away too many details because of spoilers, it was interesting to write their chaotic energy.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I’m not sure how “quirky” this is, but I like to handwrite my rough draft. For me, my creativity flows more freely that way. At first, all I had was a pen and paper—but then I got myself a reMarkable tablet. It lets me write by hand and it automatically converts it into text afterward, so I can refine future drafts on the computer.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
When others use religion as a tool of animosity, decent people in the same religion cannot remain quiet—otherwise, nothing will remain of the faith but the destruction caused by it.
