Interview with Fikret Pajalic, Author of Complication: Short Stories

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Complication?

About ten years or so, after coming to Australia, from war in Bosnia, it was suggested to me that putting some of my memories on paper would help in dealing with my nightmares and process my inner demons. They were right.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Complication, what would they be?

Mother by Danzig and Stop! By Jane’s Addiction.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Literary fiction and Creative non-fiction.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Russia: Revolution and Civil War, 1917—1921 by Antony Beevor

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

My favourite short story is Complication, which in about 3000 words encapsulates my life, and represents all our lives. Our lives are a series of struggles or difficult situations, sometimes they might even look insurmountable, but those are the moments or situations that make us and stay with us. These moments that make it worth living this absurd existence. My favourite scene to write was the raven scene at the end of Complication and the metaphor it creates.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

No, but I keep a notebook on my bedside table to jot down the ideas.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

“Tomorrow is promised to no one” and “Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.”

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I’m often told that I had courage and resilience to flee war in my country. The truth is that when you are running away from war, your only motivation is to survive. The only thing that gets you to safety is luck. I was lucky, most weren’t. Behind each refugee statistic is a unique human story, marked by loss and survival. If those who lived their whole lives in safety begin to read those stories, maybe one day we will live in a world where compassion transcends borders.

Interview with Shane Lege, Author of Thalondor Kingdom of Legends

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Thalondor Kingdom of Legends?

I have always wondered if I had the ability to write an entire book. I knew it would not be easy, but I wanted to see if I had the ability to complete the process. The genre was because I like fantasy-type novels.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Fantasy, Sci-Fi, LITRPG. Yes, this is a fantasy book.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I am currently writing the second book of the Thalondor series. I am approximately 30K words into the new book and I hope to have it finished by the end of the calendar year. Following the second book, I will be writing the third book in the series, and I am still debating if book three will be the final version of the Thalondor series.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I didn't really have a favorite, as they each took on a story of their own.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

No quirky habits for writing. I just write when I have the opportunity.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Five years from now seems like a long way away. However, a decade seems like it was yesterday. Imagine where you would be if you started something a decade ago. So quit waiting to start because you think five years is too far away.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

This is my very first novel and I have learned so much. I understand the question was more about the book, but I would imagine that most authors will always remember their first novel. Even though, it probably was not the best novel they ever wrote.

Interview with Stephanie K Clemens, Author of For the Love of Hot Cocoa

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write For the Love of Hot Cocoa?

I wanted to write a holiday cozy fantasy and was inspired by Cinderella, the movie Simply Irresistible, and all Hallmark holiday RomComs.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love RomComs. But I like to write other genres as well.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Right now I’m reading witchy romances!

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The ice skating make up scene.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I write a lot with the TV on.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

The book is supposed to be fun and leave you smiling and feeling happy.

Interview with Rachel Neumeier, Author of Invictus: Captive

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Invictus: Captive?

This was one of the more difficult novels I've ever written -- because every character has secret plans. It turns out secret plans can be awkward if the author doesn't know what those plans actually are! I was stuck for three years before a chance comment someone made finally led me to realize what all those secrets had to involve.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Although I read a lot of fantasy, I read almost as much SF, historicals, mysteries, and romances. I've got broad tastes!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Menewood by Nicola Griffith, Witch King by Martha Wells, Lavender's Blue by Cruisie and Mayer, and very soon Defiance, Cherryh's 22nd Foreigner novel.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Every scene with Dr. Hale. He's going to be a reader favorite -- and he's definitely one of my favorites.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I generally write with five spaniels on the couch and, recently, a kitten trying to tuck herself under my chin. This presents certain challenges, as she is opaque.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

It's better when the good guys win.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

It's all about personal choices.
