Interview with Rachel Neumeier, Author of Invictus: Captive

17 Oct 2023

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Invictus: Captive?

This was one of the more difficult novels I’ve ever written — because every character has secret plans. It turns out secret plans can be awkward if the author doesn’t know what those plans actually are! I was stuck for three years before a chance comment someone made finally led me to realize what all those secrets had to involve.

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Although I read a lot of fantasy, I read almost as much SF, historicals, mysteries, and romances. I’ve got broad tastes!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Menewood by Nicola Griffith, Witch King by Martha Wells, Lavender’s Blue by Cruisie and Mayer, and very soon Defiance, Cherryh’s 22nd Foreigner novel.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Every scene with Dr. Hale. He’s going to be a reader favorite — and he’s definitely one of my favorites.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I generally write with five spaniels on the couch and, recently, a kitten trying to tuck herself under my chin. This presents certain challenges, as she is opaque.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

It’s better when the good guys win.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

It’s all about personal choices.
