Interview with Natalie & Greg Solomon, Authors of The Prophet

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Prophet?

“The Prophet” by Kahlil Gibran - originally published 100 years ago! - is one of the best-selling books of all time, filled with wisdom and beauty. Greg would often quote lines to Natalie, to teach and to inspire her.

But after a while, Natalie insisted that when Dad was talking about The Prophet, he should make sure the prophet is a woman.

After a while, we both realized that the book could be totally reimagined, formalizing the woman’s voice, and then making it available globally as a book.

Natalie wants girls and women to be able to read books with strong and wise female leads, and was excited to be part of this diversity, equitability, and inclusivity effort.

And so we spent roughly a year, discussing the book, the role of genders, the male default; and making edits along the way to reimagine this as a true woman’s voice version.

So it’s just turning a male prophet into a female? Or it’s more than that?

It’s much more than just ‘he’ becoming ‘she’!

From a “brain” point of view, yes - some of the edits were to create a female prophet, and to remove all the male defaults (for example, words like “mankind”, “master”, and where ‘Love’ was called ‘him’ not ‘it’).

But from a “heart” point of view, we created a reimagined version that would inspire even more people. Some entire sections were deleted because they just didn’t align with how a female prophet, rather than a male, would teach.

Our readers have loved “feeling” the advice of The Prophet coming from a woman’s voice. Women have felt themselves more part of the book than when they read the original version, and men have found a deep maternal familiarity in taking the wisdom and guidance from a woman.

And we’ve also made untold edits to the wording, to modernize the text, replace old words that aren’t in use anymore, and clarify the intent of the original text. As a result, the feedback we’re receiving is that people find our version a much easier read - one which leaves them in flow, taking less effort to follow and appreciate.

The book was published by Yinscribed Books - but there’s a story there too?

Correct! We wrote together, we designed the cover image together, and we decided to make this a complete experience by creating our own publishing company at the same time.

“Yin” is the feminine energy from yin-yang, hence the name “Yinscribed Books”.

Both father and daughter have many more books in us, and our Yinscribed Books will be the platform we’ll use, including other authors who want to write about themes of women empowerment, equitability, inspiration, and the rising of the underdog - both fiction and non-fiction.

You’re a rather unique author pair, please tell us more about yourselves.

Natalie is 7 years old, and loves reading and writing. She’s passionate about living in a world where girls and women are strong, respected, and influential.

Greg, her father, is an actuary, business advisor, and creator of the #HashtagYourLife system.

We are both passionate readers, often discussing and sometimes swapping books. (For example, Natalie is currently reading “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” on her dad’s recommendation, and Greg is reading “Bad Dad” by David Walliams on his daughter’s insistence.)

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Both father and daughter read widely. This includes fiction, non-fiction, and graphic novels. And we’re both happy to sit on the sofa for half an hour, browsing through a random volume of the World Book Encyclopaedia.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Natalie has recently bought “A Wrinkle in Time” by Madeleine L'Engle, a 5-book sci-fi series for children.

Greg has fallen in love with the writing of Haruki Murakami, and has lined up a number of his books for this year.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

We loved getting into the right mood during our writing sessions. So we had a picture of our self-created female Prophet on the screen next to us to remind us who was “talking”, and we’d play suitable Middle Eastern or inspirational music in the background, to keep our hearts and brains connected during the process.

Do you have a favorite quote from the book?

Natalie, from the chapter about Children, loves the line “You may give them your love but not your thoughts, for they have their own thoughts.”

Greg is inspired by “Work is love made visible,” from the chapter about Work.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Empowering women, and inspiring men with a woman’s voice, is something that anyone can do.

We are hoping to contribute to the world through this book. But we want our readers to remember that they can be part of this too, even in the smallest of ways - reading books by women, quoting women, listening to women, and sharing suitable women-empowered books.

“To measure you by your smallest deed only is to judge the power of the ocean by the weakness of its foam.” - from The Prophet - reimagined through a woman’s voice

Interview with Stacey Wilk, Author of Whispering Christmas

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Whispering Christmas?

I had a character in my head with a hearing problem. I knew someday I wanted to write about that. When it was time to design Nyx's book, I needed a reason to bring her back home and I had already made her a singer. A singer with a hearing problem? That made me sit up and take notice. I knew what I wanted Nyx's story to be about.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Whispering Christmas, what would they be?

Nyx: Two Doors Down by Dolly Parton

Ford: Def Leppard Love and Affection

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love to read Thrillers and Suspense.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

A Divided Heart by Alessandra Torre, Blinded by JB Shcroeder, The Girl in Cabin 13 by A.L. Rivers, and Life on Loan by Ashley Farley.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I can't say I have a favorite scene. What I love is when the scenes come together to make the best book I can possibly write.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I always play music when I write. I create a playlist for every book.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I have a few! We live our lives by our choices. Chase your joy and your dreams. Don't take anyone's crap. (ha. ha.)

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I want readers to remember how they felt when they close the book.

Interview with James Gaskin, Author of BirthdAI

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write BirthdAI?

My full-time job since 1989 has been writing books, articles, and jokes about technology, and consulting for those who don’t read my books and articles. I’ve covered many great technologies as they developed. Most fail, but some, like the Internet, change the world. AI’s impact will be many times that of the Web and Internet. I realized that everyone’s chasing General Artificial Intelligence, but they expect self-aware computers to keep running factories or sending you credit card bills. Wouldn’t a truly self-aware system have opinions of its own?

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of BirthdAI, what would they be?

Music plays an important role in BirthdAI because I’m a musician (classical violin, which you can hear at FirstDesk.com, and more). Chris crosses over from classical to popular music, as I do, so his theme song might be Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.”

EUNICE prefers Bach’s “Art of the Fugue,” a piece that starts with a simple foundation and becomes increasingly more complex and fascinating. Michael and Susan share “Lovers Understand,” by the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies, while their song, “The Snake” makes a great entrance song for Major Braddock.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I help run the Dallas Mystery Writers group, so mystery and thriller books abound, and crossovers with science fiction (I consider BirthdAI a crossover) call to me. My Teen Telepaths series mixes SF, YA, global conspiracies, and murder, as does my The Unmagical Detective. Genre intersections may be vague, but accurate for me.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

The Color of Magic, Terry Pratchett’s first Discworld novel, The Ferryman by Justin Cronin, and Raylan by Elmore Leonard.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The last one. Readers say the ending both surprised and excited them, a great goal for every scene.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Just good coffee in my office at my ergonomic keyboard. Our two cats check on me, but won’t sit on my lap while I’m working.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

There’s always a place for curiosity and laughter.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

The people developing technology influence the results in ways substantial and subtle, and they all have competing agendas.

Interview with Michelle Mankin, Author of Ghosts of the Canyon

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Ghosts of the Canyon?

I have always wanted to write a love story set in the Woodstock era.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Ghosts of the Canyon, what would they be?

Hopelessly Heedlessly -Crosby, Stills and Nash for Liam Hart, Rock and Roll Woman-Buffalo Springfield for Katelyn Love, Carry On-Crosby, Stills and Nash for Ryan Chance.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I'm a mood reader. I love all romance. I also read and watch a lot of rockstar biographies since most of my books are in the rockstar romance subgenre.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Mafia Romance, since that is what is next on my release calendar.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The first forbidden love scene between the lead female and male character and the Vietnam War Protest Scene. Oh, and the paint handprints scene.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

My quirkiest writing habit is typing up my chapters on my notepad on my phone. I email them to myself and copy them into my laptop.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Be true to your heart.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Make the most of every moment given with those you love.

Interview with Lynn Walker, Author of A Perfectly Good Fantasy

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write A Perfectly Good Fantasy?

I was so touched when readers of my first book, Midnight Calling: A Memoir of a Drug Smuggler's Daughter, contacted me to say how happy they were that I survived and wondered how my life was today. Inspired by my readers, I picked up where Midnight Calling left off and wrote a sequel memoir.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of A Perfectly Good Fantasy, what would they be?

The song, “Lost Stars” is the perfect theme song for my book. That song has it all: youth being wasted on the young, one-night stands, Cupid demanding back his arrows.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I should say my favorite genre to read is memoir, since that’s what I write. And I do read lots of memoir, but that’s more like “work.” For pleasure, I read historical and literary fiction and some fantasy (magic realism).

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Reasons to Stay Alive, Horse: A Novel, The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

My favorite scenes were those that took place in the wilderness (the real one, not the wilderness of love) because I wanted to capture not only the rugged beauty but the power and magic the wilderness holds. The Russian castle scene was fun, too.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

My latest addiction—I mean, writing motivation—is homemade beeswax candles with some yummy smelling essential oil. Can’t wait to get in my office each morning and light one up. Once in the office, I try to write at least 600 words every day. And I always reward myself with a piece of really good, dark chocolate.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

All we have is today. Don’t waste it.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I hope readers will remember this from my books: never give up. On life. On love. On yourself. And no matter what, never ever give up on teenagers. Usually, they do come around.

Interview with Angie Ross, Author of Murder in the Mangroves

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Murder in the Mangroves?

Social media and online reviews play an increasingly important role in all of our lives, and especially in the life of a small business owner. I was interested in exploring how quickly one’s entire livelihood can be effectively ended simply by accusation alone. As far as the series, the concept started with Pete’s character. Pete seems charmed but, like so many of us, he’s trying to curate the perfect life and struggling with the line between his desire to help others and his desire for peace. He’s also trying to honor his mental health journey while being true to his ambitious nature.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Murder in the Mangroves, what would they be?

I made an entire playlist for my book! It’s available through my newsletter and it’s all the songs I listened to when writing Murder in the Mangroves. It’s tough for me to pick just one song for the characters, but at least in this book it would be: Pete Brown: Shady Lane by Pavement Shae Brunell: Hole in The Earth by Deftones Emily Larson: Saltwater by Geowulf

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love most every genre, but my go to is probably mysteries. For now, it’s also my favorite genre to write.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

More than I could read in a lifetime! But a few at the top are The Long Ships by Frans G. Bengtsson, The Postman Always Rings Twice by James Cain, and Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. I’m always working my way through Agatha Christie’s anthology.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Truly, I enjoyed writing every scene. But Luke is a favorite character and I enjoyed writing those scenes.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

As long as I have coffee, I’m good! I spent a lot of time writing this book at my favorite local coffee shop with the same playlist in the background.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Things will always be better and worse than you expect. Also, it will probably be fine. Also, when things seem out of control I sometimes ask (myself or others), “Did you try drinking water?”

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

There’s always more to a situation than we see on the surface and most everyone is doing the best they can. Be kind.
