Interview with Marin Montgomery, author of All The Pretty Lies

24 Jul 2018

What can you tell us about your new release, All The Pretty Lies?

The book focuses on repercussions stemming from an affair and how it affects an entire family and the choices that are made because of it. I wanted the mistress to be the antithesis of the typical homewrecker. There’s a more complicated story to the characters and it’s not black and white. She’s more complex and I hope readers have some empathy for her.

What books do you find yourself returning to again and again?

I enjoy Chelsea Handler for her candid humor and am a huge fan of Rob Lowe’s memoirs. I didn’t grow up watching him in movies because I came up in a different generation but his stories are entertaining and well-written.

What’s on your writing desk?

I’d love to write a romance. It’s on the agenda. And I’m outlining another psych thriller. I have so many ideas churning in my brain.

Say you’re the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

My first guest would be Laura Ingalls Wilder. I grew up reading her books and as a midwestern girl, I’d want to hear about her observations on the prairie since she grew up in such a different generation. I think it would be worthwhile to talk about the differences and have an honest conversation on how modern technologies have changed us for better and worse.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

I think an important piece of advice is, “what other people think about you is none of your business.” We as humans, especially as women, tend to worry how we are perceived and how we come off to others. It’s refreshing to just be yourself and I find that as I get older, I care less about others opinions of me.

What’s a typical day like for you?

A typical day consists of working out, drinking an almond latte, walking my goldendoodle, and working. I’m lucky that I’m able to do what I love. A work/life balance is important.

What scene in All Was The Pretty Lies was your favorite to write?

My favorite scene to write was the prologue. I wanted to articulate how the character felt and her emotions; good and bad. She has a range of feelings and I thought it was important to humanize her since she could easily be hated by readers.
