Interview with John Pert, Author of A Heaven for the Stars

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write this book?

I was inspired to write A Heaven for the Star while reflecting on the nature of success. There is a visible paradox between external success, fame and fortune, and the underlying struggles of addiction, unhappiness, and suicide. This led me to capture the ultimate meaning of life by looking through the lens of those who seemingly possessed everything, yet departed this world far too early.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of your book, what would they be?

In this case, the answer is pretty simple. With major music artists as the main characters, the perfect song for each of them is obviously their own. Talk about convenient!

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Personally, I love reading literary fiction, thrillers, and satirical comedies. I have already written in the first two genres and I am currently thinking about writing a satirical comedy, so yes, my reading tastes align perfectly with my writing.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt and Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

My favorite moment is always the opening chapter, not necessarily a concrete scene. I love the feeling of crystallizing the story from the very first lines when the whole narrative arc is already clear in my mind. It gives me a pleasant sense of vertigo because I know that, step by step, this vision is about to become a reality.

Do you have any quirky writing habits?

I’m not superstitious with objects, but my writing ritual is purely mental. I cannot write a single line until the whole narrative arc is crystal clear in my head. This means my quirky habit is basically ghosting the real world for a few days while I live entirely inside my future book, organizing the chapters before the first word hits the page.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

If I had to choose a philosophy, it would be to never mistake visibility for value. We live in a world obsessed with external success, fame, and applause, but true fulfillment is quiet; it is found in inner peace, meaningful connections, and doing what you love. That contrast between what the world sees and what the soul actually needs is not just my personal philosophy, but also the very core of my book.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I want them to remember that even the brightest stars can lose their way in the dark. I hope after turning the final page, readers take a moment to reflect on their own journey.
