Interview with J.L. Calder, Author of DoubleHelix
31 Dec 2025
What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write DoubleHelix: Book One in the Helix Project?
I watched the fall of the Soviet Union as a teenager, and I remember seeing a news program about an orphanage in Ukraine. One of the kids was my age, and I thought, “Wow, that could just as easily be me.” From that, it bloomed into this idea of “what if you’re linked to global events and people and you had no idea?!”
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of DoubleHelix: Book One in the Helix Project, what would they be?
“Brain Stew” by Green Day is Mike Green in a nutshell, whereas his muse, Delilah, is more of a Pink Floyd/ The Wall girl.
What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I try not to read in genre because I’m afraid of accidental plagiarism = ) but yes, I do love a good political/military thriller.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
I just downloaded the whole Sky Thieves series, and I’m obsessed!
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
Oooh…I loved all the “inserts” of Mike’s pulp novels. His cheesy detective voice/dark conscience is so raw and campy, I always end up laughing.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I do my best writing in the summer – the hotter the better, and outside on the patio! (Or in Hawaii, is good too!)
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
You have a 100% success rate at living through the day (so far).
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
Its ok to make the wrong decision for the right reason.
