Interview with Ivy Smoak, author of Made of Steel

16 Mar 2017

What can you tell us about your new release, Made of Steel?

Made of Steel is the first book in my brand new series.  It’s a romance-meets-suspense superhero novel.  The main character has just entered the witness protection program.  She is forced to hide behind the mask of her new identity and easily finds a connection with the New York City vigilante – the only other person who knows how it feels to hide his true self.  But her past refuses to stay in the past.  The clock is ticking and it’s only a matter of time before the darkness tries to swallow her whole.  It’ll make your heart race in more ways than one

If you were a teacher, what book would you assign to your class?

I would tell them to read a book that they actually enjoy.  Being forced to read a book that you don’t actually like doesn’t do anyone any good.  It just makes kids hate reading.  But if I really had to choose…I’d say Harry Potter.  It’s one of those books that has a little something for everyone.  And who doesn’t like a little magic?

Which books would we be surprised to find on your shelves?

I absolutely love a good mystery novel.  Harlan Coben novels take up a noticeable amount of shelf space.  The most surprising thing might be that I barely have any romance novels on my shelf.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

An ice cream truck.  I know what you’re thinking…what?  The actual truck that carries ice cream?  I don’t know how to explain this one.  But when I did a project about myself in kindergarten, I wrote that I wanted to be an ice cream truck and I’ve never been able to live it down.  I blame it on my obsession with ice cream.  I’m a weirdo, what can I say?

BAM. You’re a superhero. What’s your superpower?

I’ve been thinking a lot about this because of Made of Steel.  I think it would be super awesome to be able to freeze time for everyone but myself.  It’s like being invisible only better…no one can see you plus you have more time.  Two for one?  I’ll take it!  If I could just freeze time, write my book all day, unfreeze it and relax I’d be one happy camper.

How do you like to spend a rainy day?

Writing, of course!  But that’s a silly answer.  I spend almost all my time writing.  It drives my fiancé crazy.  If you were forcing me to relax though, you’d just have to sit me down in front of a TV show that makes me laugh and cry.  Give me all the feels and I’ll be totally engrossed for hours.  Or days.  Don’t judge me.

What scene in Made of Steele was your favorite to write?

Definitely the ending.  The whole book is culminating to this exciting point, and the result is the perfect explosion.  Boom.  Don’t worry…there is no bomb.  Although, wouldn’t that be a fun ending?  Boom…everyone’s gone.  The end.  Is that what’s going to happen in Game of Thrones?  I kind of feel like it is…

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Not really, but I’ve always loved the quote – “Shoot for the moon.  Even if you miss it, you’ll land among the stars.”  Trying your best is always worth it.
