Interview with Chiah Wilder, author of Sangre

23 May 2018

What can you tell us about your new release, Sangre?

SANGRE is a second chance at love, rockstar romance, and outlaw biker romance all tied together. There is also an element of suspense running through the love story. The heroine, Isla, is a lead singer for a rock band, Iris Blue, and she has a crazed fan spooking the heck out of her. She hires the Hero’s, Sangre, security company to protect her. When they both meet, sparks fly, and they embark on a journey that is fraught with laughter, sadness, anger, difficult choices and, of course, love.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

When I was a very small child, my father never read bedtime stories to me; rather, he’d make up these wonderful stories that were full of adventure and love. I loved them so much and can still remember many of them to this day. That began my love affair with words and creating worlds I could escape to.

What’s on your top 5 list for the best books you’ve ever read?

This one is a really hard question because I have so many “best books” that I’ve read over the years. The ones that stand out to me at this moment are:

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers

The Help by Kathryn Stockett

East of Eden by John Steinbeck (really anything by John Steinbeck)

Sweet Dreams at the Goodnight Motel by Curtiss Ann Matlock

What’s your favorite thing about writing?

Being lost in another world where the characters take me on a journey that sometimes surprises me. When I write, everything is blocked out around me. All that is alive is the story, the characters, and their lives in their world.

What is a typical day like for you?

I write for most of the morning, take a break, then work on marketing and other projects I have going on with another business I run. To be honest, with family and clients, my days turn out being sort of unpredictable no matter how hard I try and set a routine. I do get my writing in every day even if that means working well into the early morning hours.

What scene in Sangre was your favorite to write?

There were so many, but I loved writing the scene where Isla’s on stage singing and she is one with the music and the audience, and Sangre is watching her totally transfixed and pulled in by her, and he knows at that moment, she isn’t just any ordinary woman.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

There are things in live that we simply cannot control, but how we react to them is always within our control.
