Interview with Alexa H. Michaels, Author of The Lost Sister

02 Mar 2022

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Lost Sister?

This was a bucket list project that finally came to life. My childhood friend and I both share interests in classical literature and modern fiction. We set about to craft our own tale based in the elements of fantasy and romance. Although we live in a land-locked State, we have over 10k lakes, so we adore the water. Summers at the beach really helped us flush out the feel of this adventure.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Lost Sister, what would they be?

So for Meira it would be something like “He’s a Pirate” from Pirates of the Caribbean. She’s crafty and able to slip through sticky situations just like Jack Sparrow. For Rina, the other twin, it would be something like “Heart of Courage” from Two Steps From Hell. Rina has a brave streak that won’t be extinguished, no matter how many people trample her fire. And when she’s allowed to fly, she becomes a force to be reckoned with.

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Dark Romance, it can be fantasy or contemporary. I don’t write the truly dark stuff yet, but someday… There is something about a tragic and hopeless situation that brings out the fight in people. Mafia is a good subgenre to really show the despicable character and yet the anti-hero rises from the ashes to win out over the villain.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Some Cora Reilly books, more Sophie Lark books. I want to also tackle all of Caroline Peckham’s works (because she’s the queen of darkness).

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The scene in book one where Meira has to leave her room at the inn in Ely and track down the man in black. Her fear of heights and the mercenary’s response were vivid and just sang off the page.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I have to light a candle. Unless I’m in a public setting (writing at a coffee house), I always have a candle burning beside my laptop. It becomes that “It’s time to work” moment to bring my brain into focus. Plus the fire feels alive, and maybe it even whispers secrets to me…

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

“It is double pleasure to deceive the deceiver.” Niccoló Machiavelli

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

That family consists of those who are there for us. Love doesn’t exist because it is supposed to. It has to spark, and that flame must be tended—whether it is between siblings, parents and children, or lovers.
