Interview with Inés Saint, author of Perfect Paige

What can you tell us about your new release, Perfect Paige?
Perfect Paige is the story of Paige Galloway, a seemingly perfect all-American PTA suburban mother of two who everybody wants to be like, and Alex Hooke, the FBI agent who takes down Paige’s equally perfect husband—smack in the middle of a PTA meeting at Paige’s house. Paige’s world is blown apart, and she and her two young children move to her grandmother’s quirky hometown, Spinning Hills, to regroup. Alex Hooke’s investigation leads him to Spinning Hills, and Paige is left with no choice but to help Alex for the sake of her children’s father. Alex and Paige’s beliefs and perceptions are challenged when their true motives for living the lives they lead are revealed.

What or who inspired you to become an author?
As a teenager, I’d write my close friends letters and include fun, fictional stories about their future. They’d always ask for more. Years later, during a reunion, I learned that many of these old friends kept the letters and that they would reread them whenever they needed a pick-me-up. The fact that they kept them touched me and inspired me to turn some of the stories in my head into novels. My purpose in writing cute, heartwarming stories is to make people smile and forget their troubles for a while.

Who is your favorite fictional character from literature?
Anne Elliot from Jane Austen’s Persuasion. I love both her sensitivity and her independent spirit, which she must learn to trust. We’re also treated to her thoughts and emotions, and her feelings ring true to me.

You’re hosting a literary dinner party. Which three writers are invited?
Jane Austen, Charlotte Brontë, and F. Scott Fitzgerald. I have questions for all of them, and I think it would make for an interesting get-together.

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?
I wish I could answer something that makes me sound interesting, but honestly, I would spend it watching reruns of my favorite sitcoms. I never get to watch TV anymore!

BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?
The ability to simply and safely travel to any place at any point in time with a person of my choosing.

What scene in Perfect Paige was your favorite to write?
I thoroughly enjoyed writing the scene where Alex and Paige pretend to kiss and are caught by Paige’s sister and Alex’s grandmother and great-aunt. Everyone’s reaction was fun to write.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?
Yes. Kindness matters.

Interview with A.M. Madden, author of Dark Corners

What can you tell us about your new release, Dark Corners?
Dark Corners is a story about an army war vet whose struggles with PTSD taking over his life. David Cavello is no longer in uniform, but the memories of combat still haunt his every waking moment. Driven to protect and serve, he accepts an undercover job he has to keep hidden from everyone. But David’s mission goes against orders the second he makes contact with gorgeous and spirited Maygen Whitney. The intense attraction he feels for Maygen drives him crazy—almost as crazy as he feels about hiding information from her.

After growing up with an overprotective father, Maygen feels like she’s finally claiming her independence. Sure, she’s been lonely, but David seems to make all her dreams come deliciously true—until the sting of betrayal sends her world spiraling. Now Maygen’s caught in a tragic web of lies, leaving her more vulnerable than ever to an enemy hidden in the shadows. But when Maygen most needs a hero, David leaps into action—intent on doing whatever it takes to save the woman he loves.

What or who inspired you to become an author?
I love reading romance and watching romantic movies of all types. When I started writing my first book Back-Up, it was based on a dream I had. The desire to write my own version of a perfect romance began as a project that has now turned into a career.

Which books would we be surprised to find on your shelves?
I'm not sure my shelves hold any surprises since 99% of the books I own are indeed romances.

What's your spirit animal? (it doesn't have to be an animal)
A Golden Retriever puppy.

If you had to pick one place to vacation for the rest of your life, where would you choose?
Any beach, anywhere. We do live very close to the beach and are fortunate enough to spend our summers there.

What's the best advice you've ever received?
When starting my writing career I reached out to SC Stephens. She was super sweet and gave me some very sound advice that helped me in so many ways. The best thing she said to me, which I remind myself of daily, is that it's a marathon and not a sprint. I stay true to my characters and my writing style, and hope with time more and more will discover my books and enjoy my works.

What scene in Dark Corners was your favorite to write?
David and Maygen's first kiss. It wasn't in a romantic location, it didn't have flowers and candlelight, yet it was super hot.

“Maygen Whitney, may I kiss you?”

At my winded, “Yes,” he shifted his eyes down to my mouth before bending to press his work-of-art lips against mine. Those lethal lips and his hold held me prisoner to the most perfect kiss I’ve ever had. My hands were sandwiched between his firm chest and my heaving breasts, and all I could do was grip the wool fabric of his coat beneath my fingers, holding on for dear life. With his lips, he was taking me on an exhilarating ride that I never wanted to end. It wasn’t choppy, as some kisses are. It was fluent and living, one long endless . . .Sigh.

“Do that again,” he said against my lips.

“Do what?”

“Sigh into my mouth. Do it again.”

The second time his lips met mine, his eyes remained opened, willing mine to do the same. With our mouths attached, he opened his and drew in my sigh. Holding it deep in his lungs, he slowly released one of his own into my awaiting body. Before I could catch my breath he skimmed his tongue along the top of mine, coaxing it out, demanding it to follow. Once I did, he latched on to gently suck it until my knees almost buckled.

When we broke for air, he looked as dazed as I felt.

He pressed his forehead against mine, and with his eyes closed said, “Maygen, I think you should go inside.”

“Okay.”

Even after his request, it still took a few seconds for him to release me. He stepped away and waited for me to enter the foyer of my building. Once inside, I watched as he lifted the collar of his peacoat, shoved his hands deep into his pockets, and walked away. He never asked for my number, or hinted he’d see me again.

Interview with Barbara Longley, author of What You Do To Me

What can you tell us about your new release, What You Do To Me?
What You Do To Me is a fun, flirty romantic comedy about two individuals who are set up by the heroine’s mom. Trudy (the mom) hopes a little male attention will push her moping daughter back into the dating pool. Now, Haley’s mother doesn’t want her to actually date the Twin Cities’ handsiest handyman, and Haley would never agree to a one-night-stand. All Trudy wants is for Sam to make a pass at her brokenhearted daughter, so Haley gets her mo-jo back. That’s all. Of course, things don’t go at all like they’re supposed to, but I won’t spoil if for the readers.

What’s the last book you read?
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss, which is great. It’s fantasy fiction, which I love and also write. I’m starting book #2 in his series today.

Who is your favorite couple from literature?
There are so many, but I’d have to say Westley and Buttercup from Morgenstern’s The Princess Bride. I have to admit I’ve read the retell by William Goldman and the original, and I prefer the retell.

Do you listen to anything while you write? If so, what's your audio of choice?
I have my iTunes set at “shuffle all” and it’s generally playing while I write. I have eclectic tastes in music, so anything goes. Some days it’s country music; other days it’s pop or the blues. Depending upon what I’m writing, I might choose a particular album to inspire me. Lately, I’m into The Lumineers and music I’ve downloaded from the TV show The Voice.

What TV show have you binge watched?
I haven’t binge watched for ages, but the last time I did, it was True Blood, one bloody season after the other.

What scene in What You Do To Me was your favorite to write?
I love the scene where Haley and Sam first meet, and there’s that moment of realization when they figure out they’ve been set up.

"Do you have a motto or philosophy that you live by?
I have a couple of mottos I seem to fall back on regularly. One is: always have a plan B,C,D,E and F. The other is: see obstacles in your path as stepping stones leading you to where you want to go.

Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe. I'm a huge Green Gables fan and they were the first fictional couple I fell in love with.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I always loved books but I didn't think I could write one. My mother-in-law encouraged me to give it a shot. I had my first book deal a year later.

What fictional literary world would you most like to visit?

Hogwarts. No contest!

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?

Honestly? Sleeping. I'm up all night most of the time. I have a few years of sleep to catch up on.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?
JK Rowling. I'd ask her what happened to Harry's grandparents. I've always wanted to know more about them.

What scene in All Fall Down was your favorite to write?

The end! It's my favorite scene but in a bittersweet way. We've spent three books working up to the reveal and when I wrote it I was a nervous wreck. I felt sick to my stomach. That's how intense it was. I love when the writing experience is as visceral as the reading experience.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities. — JK Rowling
