Interview with Wesley Banks, author of Faith In Every Footstep

What can you tell us about your new release, Faith In Every Footstep?

Faith In Every Footstep is the prequel to Hope In Every Raindrop. I promise if you love dogs, you will not be able to get enough of this book. It’s kind of like Jack London meets Nicholas Sparks.

Would you ever participate in The Yukon Quest?

It’s something I would love to do, but to be honest, I’m not sure I could handle it. I interviewed several mushers for the book, and the extreme colds (up to negative sixty below) combined with what seem like endless days of mushing sound insanely difficult. I think that’s probably why many people refer to it as one of the world’s toughest races.

Who is your favorite fictional character from literature?

Even though Patrick Rothfuss seems pretty determined not to release Doors Of Stone, his character Kvothe, is definitely one of my favorites. I also love Vaelin Al Sorna from Blood Song, and Eragon from The Inheritance Cycle. I could keep going on; there are so many great books and characters!

What advice would you  give your teenage self?

There’s an old Delphic maxim, “Know thyself.” I think becoming self-aware early on and refusing to compromise from who you are is the best advice I could give.

If you were a teacher, what book would you assign to your class?

Emerson’s Essays, without hesitation. They cover topics like friendship, love, character, history, and so on.

What makes your world go round? Why does it bring you joy?

The short answer is purpose. I think you can find happiness from doing pointless things (like playing video games, which I love to do), but real joy comes from purpose.

What scene in Faith In Every Footstep was your favorite to write?

I can’t say too much without giving away the ending, but I will say that anyone who reads this book will fall in love with the dog, King. During the climax King comes to life in a way you won’t forget.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Several, but the most prevalent is “Where there is a will, there is a way.”

The Summer Before the War

Helen Simonson

Fans of Simonson’s first novel, Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand, will love her newest release. It’s set in a small English town right before the dawn of World War I, and it shows how the members of the town are affected by the tragedies of wartime. Despite the heavy subject matter, The Summer Before the War is witty and paints a vivid picture of this close-knit, idyllic town. Accompanied by a cozy blanket and a warm cup of tea, you might even feel like you’re in England!

Interview with Skye Warren, author of The Pawn

What can you tell us about your new release, The Pawn?

The Pawn kicks off a brand new dark and sexy contemporary series for me! It’s about a young woman who quits college to take care of her sick father, who’s about to lose their house unless she sells something worth a lot of money… her virginity.

Name a book that you feel has impacted your significantly. Why was it so impactful?

I love To Have and to Hold by Patricia Gaffney. It’s a historical romance, and not that recent, but I think it’s one of the best dark romances ever written! I also loved the relatively new All the Ugly and Wonderful Things by Bryn Greenwood. Basically, I love things dark, lush and taboo.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest. What would you want to ask?

Wow, now I want this to be my job. It’s too hard to choose. I want to hear from all my favorite authors, but mostly I want us to be in a room with lots of wine. Let’s see – Sylvia Day? I think I’d ask what she’s working on next *evil grin*.

What's on your writing desk?

Some silver pawn-shaped keychains (for swag giveaways), dark chocolate covered almonds, and a book of poetry by Rupi Kaur.

BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?

All the knowledge in all the world. I would literally be a Know It All!

What's the best advice you've ever received?

In the end, only kindness matters. Though I’m not sure that’s advice so much as song lyrics…

What scene in The Pawn was your favorite to write?

I loved writing a scene near the end, that makes the title and cover so much more relevant. I mean, it’s already relevant at the beginning, but by the end it’s downright dirty.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Mostly I try to write the books I love, the books I need to write. Because I think there are readers who need them written.

Interview with Nichole Christoff, author of The Kill Sign

What can you tell us about your new release, The Kill Sign?

In The Kill Sign, the stakes couldn’t be higher for Jamie. She comes to a crossroads, both professionally and personally in this novel. She can see the paths not taken, and now she has to decide what to do about that.

Who or what inspired you to become an author?

One too many times, I caught myself saying, “That hole in the wall of this parking garage would make the perfect place to stash the ransom money in an action-packed thriller.” I was a TV news producer at the time, and while on a break between shows, I began writing a story to fit that hole in the wall.

What fictional literary world would you most like to visit?

I’d want to visit Maureen Johnson’s Great Britain and solve crimes, Shades of London style, just like Rory Deveaux in The Name of the Star.

If you could invent anything, what would it be?

I’d invent a lever you could flip to freeze time. I’d mount it right in the middle of the grandfather clock in my hall. That way, when I’m running late or am short on time and have to get things done, I could flip that switch and have all the time in the world.

What scene in The Kill Sign was your favorite to write?

My favorite scene finds Jamie, and the DEA agent who’d love to be her love interest, tracking a suspect to a shop just outside a fictional military post in the Deep South that features “live lingerie models.” Those shops really do exist near military installations in that neck of the woods, and it was a lot of fun writing straight-laced Jamie as she navigated one.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

“Slow and steady win the race,” or in other words, just keep at it. That was good advice for Aesop’s Tortoise when he faced the Hare, and it’s great advice these days, too.

Interview with L. P. Dover, author of Intended for Bristol

What can you tell us about your new release, Intended for Bristol?

I can say it's one of my favorites! Jaxon Reed has been a notorious bad boy in my Second Chances novels. It was fun being able to let him find a happy ending, even though it was a rocky road to redemption.

Name a book that you feel has impacted your life significantly. Why was it so impactful?

This would have to be my novel, Meant for Me. It was the first of my novels to ever hit a bestseller's list. Never in my wildest dreams did I think it'd ever happen to me. For that reason, it holds a special place in my heart. It's opened the doors to a lot of possibilities.

Who is your favorite couple from literature?

I'd have to say Korinne and Galen from my novel, Love's Second Chance. It's the first contemporary romance I ever wrote and it's the story of how my husband and I met and fell in love.

What's your spirit animal?

Definitely a wolf.

BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?

My superhero name would be SUPER SCRIPTER and I'd have the ability to write as many words a day as I wanted.

What advice would you give your teenage self?

Think before you act and be patient. To this day, I still have issues with patience, but I've gotten better. I'm sure I could've avoided a lot of catastrophes if I'd thought before acting impulsively.

What scene in Intended for Bristol was your favorite to write?

It'd have to be the part where Bristol finds out the truth about Jaxon. I can't give away the secret, but it's a really angsty part of the book. I love writing the scenes that make you feel.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

Interview with Lauren Layne, author of Someone Like You

What can you tell us about your new release, Someone Like You?

It’s probably the most “anticipated” book I’ve ever written, both my readers, and for me as an author! It’s the story of one of my more secretive characters, Lincoln Mathis, and I finally reveal what the charming playboy’s been hiding all this time. It’s technically part of a series, but can absolutely be read as a standalone!

What's the last book you read?

I just finished Lorraine Heath’s The Viscount and the Vixen and it was absolutely wonderful. I’ve been on a huge historical kick this past year, and Lorraine Heath’s one of the best of the best.

Who is your favorite couple from literature?

Emma and Mr. Knightley from classic literature. Sugar Beth Carey and Colin Byrne as one of my favorite modern couples (Susan Elizabeth Philips’ Ain’t She Sweet).

Do you listen to anything while you write? If so, what's your audio of choice?

Ha, well recently it’s been Kelly Clarkson’s Wrapped in Red Christmas album on repeat, but generally speaking, I have specific playlists for each of my books. For some books, I’ll listen to one song over and over, for others, each scene has a different song, depending on the mood of the characters. For the book Someone Like You, it was one song on repeat … Adele’s fabulous … wait for it … Someone Like You.

If you could have dinner with anyone, alive or dead, who would you choose and why?

I’d love to meet JK Rowling, although I think I might be so star struck I’d just stare. I also have a crazy crush on Michael Buble, so he’s always on the list.

If you had to pick one place to vacation for the rest of your life, where would you choose?

I’d love to be by the water in Maine, preferably during winter, in a luxury cabin with a wraparound porch. I’d curl up with a blanket and my laptop, coffee in the morning, wine in the evening!

What scene in Someone Like You was your favorite to write?

Oh gosh. I really can’t say much at all without being spoilery, but it’s this one scene with the hero and his guy friends. I was shocked to find myself crying as I was writing! It’s the first time I’ve ever shed tears while writing, and I was like, “What is happening?!” It was odd, but also a lovely reminder of the power of words.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

“Why not me?” It’s something I ask myself constantly whenever I find myself shying away from a dream or goal that feels “too big.” I remind myself that Oprah, Stephen King, Tony Robbins—we’re all just people! The difference between the great and average lies entirely in our own hands, our own decisions.
