Interview with Krista Lakes, author of A Forever Kind of Love

What can you tell us about your new release, A Forever Kind of Love?

This is a great, fun read. It has the best happily ever after ending I think I've ever written!

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

This is hard.  I have always loved fantasy, so The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and The Green Rider are my perennial favorites. I love "Pride and Prejudice" (like everyone else) and anything written by Jill Shalvis.

Who is your favorite couple from literature?

Westley and Buttercup from The Princess Bride

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

My first guest would be JK Rowling just because I want to meet her. She is my writing hero.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

I love getting to fall in love a thousand times over. There's a thrill in getting to make  story based on these amazing and powerful emotions. I get to fall in love over and over without ever leaving my office.

How do you like to spend a rainy day?

Jumping in puddles with my kids, then getting warm and watching a movie.

What scene in A Forever Kind of Love was your favorite to write?

I loved writing their first kiss. There is so much build up to it, that when it comes, it is hot and awesome.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Always be kind.

Interview with Skye Warren, author of The King

What can you tell us about your new release, The King?

THE KING is my new book about a girl gambled away by her father to the man he owes. It’s sexy and emotional and hopefully compelling! It features a character from my USA Today bestselling Endgame trilogy, Damon Scott. He’s the one who “wins” the heroine. It’s not just random luck. They have a secret history and even more secret feelings. Delving deep into their story while writing has been an incredible journey.

What's on your top five list for best books you've ever read?

Oh my gosh, I need to stop and fangirl for a moment. The list might change a little very time I say it, but definitely To Have and To Hold by Patricia Gaffney would be there. One of the best dark romances ever written. Other historicals would be His at Night by Sherry Thomas and Morning Glory by LaVyrle Spencer.

On the contemporary side, I love everything that Carolyn Crane/Annika Martin writes. My favorite of hers is probably Off the Edge. I think I only have one book left? Eek!

I’m going with Wait for It by M O’Keefe. Brilliant writing, stunning emotions.

Who are your literary heroes working today? Why do you admire them?

I love the authors who write on the darker edge of romance, like Kitty Thomas, Anna Zaires, and Pam Godwin. I can always rely on them to take me somewhere new and daring.

And I love finding new authors to adore. I’ve recently developed a complete author crush on Eve Dangerfield. I’ve read all her books, but I think the standout is Taunt. Completely original.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

My favorite thing is the way the story unfolds for me. When I start writing I don’t know all the twists and turns the book will take. Only by following the characters can I uncover it. Kind of like with reading, but more personal. It’s not just discovering a book, but my book.

What's a typical day like for you?

A great day for me is spent at a coffee shop, my headphones playing Lana Del Rey songs I’ve heard a million times while my fingers spin out a new scene. After that I go home and unwind by cuddling with my dogs, often outside on the patio. Wine might be involved in that part.

If you could invent anything what would it be?

An invisibility cloak. Not so that I can spy on people, but so that I can’t be found. It’s the introvert in me

What scene in The King was your favorite to write?

I fell in love while writing the scene where she’s actually gambled away… but going into details about it would be a spoiler. So instead I’ll talk about the scene at the very beginning, where the hero and heroine meet for the first time.

She’s only a child, precocious and uncertain at the same time. He’s a surly teenager. Both of them are so reluctant to trust—everything they’ve learned about grown ups is temporary and unstable and sometimes even violent. But they recognize in each other kids lost to the same system, short refuge in their family’s different storms.

A lot happens before they reconnect as adults, and then come together as a couple, but that moment was pivotal in both their lives even early on.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

I have this quote on my office wall: "It always seems impossible until it's done." – Nelson Mandela

Every single book feels like an act of faith, where I don’t see how it can possibly work, where I doubt that it will even be finished, and then somehow by the time it’s done it seems inevitable that it would have been. There’s some magic there, a little apart from the real world, that I invest in as an author.

Of course the quote applies to broader things than writing. When things seem impossible with my family, with the world, I remember that it always does seem that way, until it’s done.

Interview with Michael Carlon, author of All the F's I Cannot Give

What can you tell us about your new release, All the F's I Cannot Give?

This book is my return to writing comedy. My first book, Return to Casa Grande, was a satire on reality TV, the phoniness of Hollywood, and the world of marketing – it made people laugh out loud! I then started writing thrillers which, while they had some comedic elements, were written for a different audience. I actually did not intend to write this new book but last January I was unceremoniously let go from my job as a marketing consultant and decided to fuel my anger and frustration into creativity. I’ve always believed that humor is the absence of terror and my faith in that principle made it impossible to write anything but a comedy. Writing this book was a very cathartic experience and I think many people will be able to empathize with Kelly Carson, the lead character.

Name a book that you feel has impacted your life significantly. Why was it so impactful?

I have to break the rules and name two. The first is Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl, a concentration camp survivor who writes about his experiences as an inmate at Auschwitz and later goes on to detail his psychotherapeutic method called Logotherapy. I read this during a time of my life when I was unhappy about where my career was going and at a time when I began to question whether or not my life had any meaning (as an undergraduate, I was hell bent on becoming a therapist but I sold out and entered the business world). The book taught me that all aspects of life have meaning, even in unhappy times. It changed the way I looked at the world.

The second book I’d offer up is Tourist Season by Carl Hiassen. I’m originally from Plantation, FL and all of Hiassen’s novels take place in South Florida and I can relate to the crazy situations he brings to life in this novel. This book, and all of his subsequent masterpieces, taught me how to bring characters to life and make them memorable as well as how to structure stories that readers won’t want to put down.

You're hosting a literary dinner party. Which three writers are invited?

Well, I certainly have some questions for Steven King about IT so he’s definitely getting an invite. The aforementioned Carl Hiassen gets a nod because I feel as if we’d certainly have a lot to discuss and to round out the party I’d ask Jonathan Tropper to join since most of his books can be found on my bookshelf.

What's a typical day like for you?

This will sound cliché, but there is no typical day. In addition to writing, I run my own marketing consulting company (like Kelly Carson in All the F’s, I run focus groups for a living). The day job involves a lot of travel and no two days are alike. Also, I’m the father of teenage triplets so you can imagine the drama that unfolds having three high schoolers under one roof. However, I always make time for two things every day; running and writing. The running helps to clear my head and I often get flashes of inspiration when I hit the road. Writing wise, when I am not writing a scene in a new manuscript, I do some daily journaling or work on social media content. I often feel as if there are not enough hours in the day.

BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?

When I was a kid I would have told you I wanted to be able to fly but I took a flying lesson once and realized that I am actually somewhat afraid of heights. I’d have to say I’d love the power to heal others – my parents are getting older and more prone to illness. Hell, even my dog has slowed down quite a bit. I have a hard time seeing people in pain so I’d have to say the ability to free them of that burden would be awesome.

What advice would you give your teenage self?

To not force fit yourself into what someone else wants for you. Explore your own path and follow your heart. Don’t be afraid of conflict and stand up for yourself. You actually see aspects of that in the Kelly Carson character – in many ways, his personality and mine are quite similar.

What scene in All the F's I Cannot Give was your favorite to write?

My brothers and I were big Magnum PI fans and there is a scene in the first half of the book that pays homage to the character made famous by Tom Selleck. That scene was a blast to write.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Maybe it's my Catholic school upbringing but I wholeheartedly believe in the golden rule, do unto others as you would have done unto you. A pretty deep thought from a guy who wrote a book with such a naughty title!

The Story Behind Fifty Frogs

One of the most frequently-asked questions of authors is, “Where do you find inspiration?” I always answer readers that my characters come to me, usually suggested by someone I’ve met or overheard, whose situation or unique aspect suggests a backstory to me. It can happen standing in line at the pharmacy, sitting at a restaurant or passing people in the grocery store. Sometimes, though, those characters live a little bit closer to home . . . or even in my home.

Along with my business partner, I organize and run Indie BookFest, an author education and reader appreciation weekend that takes place annually in central Florida. Last year, Indie BookFest fell the same weekend that Hurricane Matthew hit Florida. While we were all safe, thankfully, the weather impacted the event, and by its end, I was understandably exhausted.

One of my dear friends, Gail, is an author who was featured at IBF. She and I, along with my 25-year old daughter, were driving to my house after the event. We were around the corner from home when I spied a turtle in the middle of the road. Of course, we stopped and attempted to turn the poor fellow back toward the lake, but he moved very fast—very un-turtle-like!-to hide under my car. As I eased the car forward, Mr. Turtle moved, too, so that we couldn’t reach him.

Just then, an attractive young man appeared on the scene to help us. He was sweet to us, and over the course of the rescue, Gail opened the back door to the car and said to my daughter, “You need to get out and say hello! He’s so cute!”

That scene stayed with me for days, and before too long, it had birthed a new character—Vivian, a woman in her mid-twenties who is fed up with dating, and thanks to the suggestion of her aunt Gail, decides to kiss a lot of frogs and write about her experiences in a quest for both a career bump and true love.

I didn’t have to look very far for amusing first-date stories. Having two single, twenty-something daughters at home means that I hear plenty of harrowing tales involving meeting guys—and what happens on dates, not to mention what happens when things go awry. And happily for me, my girls are good spots about letting me use their experiences. Of course, I change names and tweak details to protect the innocent—and the not-so-innocent!

Vivian doesn’t have an easy time of it. Finding love in the twenty-first century is not for the faint of heart, and because I see this first-hand, it was important that among the humor and craziness, there’s also some heartache . . . just a little angst. And because a love story wouldn’t be complete with some sizzle, there’s also heat to spare once Vivian finds a frog whose kisses make her melt.

Now, wouldn’t it be a perfect ending if I could tell you that on the day Gail and I helped rescue the turtle and met the cutie from around the corner, my daughter got out of the car and found true love with the boy around the corner? Ah, well, life never runs as smoothly as fiction does. She actually stayed in the car—maybe the real Gail and I aren’t as pushy as Vivian’s mom and aunt. But you know, that guy is still in the neighborhood. Who knows?

Maybe there’s another love story waiting to happen!

Interview with Tracey Devlyn, author of Roaming Wild

What can you tell us about your new release, Roaming Wild?

Roaming WILD takes place in the mountains of western North Carolina and is a friends-to-lovers story fraught with intrigue and page-turning action. It's also the newest book in the acclaimed Steele Ridge series. In Roaming WILD, lifelong friends Deke Conrad and Evie Steele team up to stop a ruthless wildlife trafficking ring. A subject that's near and dear to my heart. Deke's a special agent with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and he's using Evie's traveling Med Mobile as cover while he tracks down the kingpin. Along the way, Deke fights his attraction for his best friend's little sister. But Evie's having none of it. I loved writing Roaming WILD and hope readers love it, too!

What's the last book you read?

I just finished the audiobook of Zero Day by David Baldacci. It's the first book in his John Puller series. Now I've moved on to the second audiobook--The Forgotten. Love the main character in this series. He's well-defined, complex, and sexy as, well, you know. Also, I'm a few chapters away from completing Jeffrey Gettleman's Love, Africa: A Memoir of Romance, War, and Survival. It's an amazing glimpse into a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist's drive to return to Africa--a continent I've been obsessed with for years.

Who are your literary heroes working today? Why do you admire them?

I'd like to tell you an author who wrote one of the classics, but all my gratitude goes to the authors who first made me fall in love with the written word -- Virgina Henley, Johanna Lindsey, Lisa Kleypas, Madeline Hunter, Julia Quinn, and so many more amazing writers.

Who is your favorite couple from literature?

Lisa Kleypas's Derek Craven and Sara Fielding. They're perfectly opposite, in every way. (Dreaming of You)

What's a typical day like for you?

I'm up by 5:00 am (even on the weekends!). After feeding the dogs and letting them out, I fix myself a bowl of cereal or, if I'm feeling frisky, a bowl of Qia. Next, I grab my phone, key up Gaia.com, and enjoy 20 minutes of yoga and meditation. Then I plop in front of the computer for about 15 minutes to check email and other admin stuff. If it's a weekday, I shower and head to the day job. At lunch time, I do more admin stuff and get in some writing. I'm generally home by 5:30 pm to have dinner with my family. Then I give everyone a hug before heading to my office for a few hours of writing time. On the weekend, I write in the morning, shower, and spend several hours with my family. Then I dive back into writing later in the day and into the evening. Sleep. Repeat.

BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?

Reading minds would be both a blessing and a curse, but I'd take it. Maybe my genius sidekick could make me a cool hat that would block out the ugly, when I've had too much.

What scene in Roaming Wild was your favorite to write?

Wow, that's like asking a parent to select their favorite child. Nope, I can't do it, because I loved so many scenes in this book--Deke and Evie's first kiss, Evie dining with the Steele clan, Deke interacting with the SONR team, Dylan consoling the cubs, Eli with his mother, Evie kicking Eli's butt. . . See, it's impossible to pick just one!

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Be a good person. Work hard. Be present.
