Interview with Vanessa Waltz, author of The Roommate Arrangement

What can you tell us about your new release, The Roommate Arrangement?

My new release is the second in my Arrangement series, but it is a standalone novel. The Roommate Arrangement is a fun, heartfelt contemporary romance. A perfect summer read for someone lounging on the beach. The book is about a woman, Saffie, who's down on her luck, has recently lost her job and been evicted. She goes to stay at her brother's summer vacation home, which is shared with seven other players on his professional soccer league. She starts a secret friends with benefits relationship with one of the players, her brother's ex-best friend.

Name a book that you feel has impacted your life significantly. Why was it so impactful?

The Golden Compass by Phillip Pullman. I read the His Dark Materials series when I was too young to understand all the references, but the books made me question things I previously accepted without thought. And I wanted one day to write something as rich and thought-provoking as the world he created in His Dark Materials.

Which books would we be surprised to find on your shelves?

Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton

What's your favorite thing about writing?

The fact I can work at my own pace and have no one to answer to is the best thing, hands down.

If you could have dinner with anyone, alive or dead, who would you choose and why?

My aunt, Rosa, died of MS when I was thirteen. I'd love to see her again and ask how she's doing (and quiz her about the afterlife).

If you had to pick one place to vacation for the rest of your life, where would you choose?

Cinque Terre, Italy. In all my travels, there has never been anything so magical as Cinque Terre's coastal scenery, turquoise waters, bright green cliffs, and pastel colored houses.

What scene in The Roommate Arrangement was your favorite to write?

The cat café date!

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

“Good friends, good books, and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life.” – Mark Twain

The Story Behind By Choice

By Rene Folsom

Life choices, and the blunders that often follow, can make for some very interesting books.  But what happens when the choices we make in life, and in love, create our own little happily ever after?

This concept is something I thoroughly enjoyed exploring when delving into the mind of my main character, Sofie, in By Choice.

“It wasn’t a matter of choosing between blue eyes or brown, short hair or long, blond or dark, clean shaven or scruff… My choice was more important than mere physical characteristics. I was letting down the careful barriers I’d built around my heart, and I knew this decision would impact my soul.”

When we are children, we are constantly told that there are consequences for our actions and the choices we make.  This is so very true, both in life and in love.  Many know that these choices don’t always come easy, and even the most simplest of choices can make a great impact on our lives.

This story, By Choice, started out with my own personal experiences when I met my husband.  I know, most might consider this inspiration somewhat cheesy, but sometimes the true stories in our lives aren’t always as whimsical as we might hope.

To this day, I cannot tell you that there was only one solitary choice I made that brought me to him.  It was a multitude of choices combined, some big and some small, that lead me to my own #MeetCute.

Eighteen years ago, at the young age of nineteen, a rather bad decision on my part caused a separation between the family I held so dear.  I was given a choice—break up with my boyfriend or move out and never turn back.  At the time, I was so sure of myself and positive that boy was the only one who deserved to hold my heart.  When given the scary ultimatum, I chose the boy.  In hindsight, most would consider my choice to be the wrong one, especially considering that relationship fell apart much faster than it was built.

But did I really make the wrong decision?  If I hadn’t made the choice to break ties with my family over that boy, I never would have moved and met my husband.

There’s the kicker—sometimes a choice you make might not always produce the outcome you desire at the time.  Life just might surprise you with something even better in the wake of your choices.

Skip ahead a few months—I’d considered my life to be in ruins because of my bad choices, or what I thought was bad at the time.  Estranged from family and unsure of what to do next, I sought out a job at a pizza place, figuring a delivery driver was just the right mundane and active job I needed at the time.  One thing most people know about me is, I never slack when it comes to representing myself.  I will always take a few additional steps to be as professional and impressive as I could possibly be.

So, when I stepped foot in a large pizza chain to apply for a job holding my resume and smiling proudly, I never expected the man behind the counter to laugh at me about my representational choices.  I found out later that bringing a resume to a pizza joint was not only unheard of, but was way overboard.  But hey, the manager liked it just fine and hired me the next day.

That man behind the counter chose to poke fun at me, but I paid him no mind.  I was proud of my accomplishments in life and wasn’t ashamed to show it.

Fast-forward another few months to my sister’s wedding.  My family had big hearts and chose to let me back into their lives.  They knew that just because the decisions we made might burn a few bridges didn’t mean those bridges couldn’t be rebuilt.  We all deserved a second chance at making the right choices.

At this point, I was happy with my job… yes, the same pizza delivery job I got with my stellar resume… and I was happy with me.  So, when I met the singer the night before my sister’s wedding, I was caught off guard by the feelings I had for the man.  He was suave, handsome, and had a voice that could melt the panties off any young girl.  We sang together for my sister’s first dance and immediately took a liking to each other, regardless of the almost twenty-two year age gap.

But… and this is a big but…

Remember that man who laughed at my choice to bring a resume for a pizza delivery job?  Well, I was slowly getting to know him and all his wonderful traits.  For the past several months I’d been working at the pizza joint, I chose to get to know him more—to see the man behind the snickers I got the first day we met.

The week my sister got married, I started dating two very wonderful men.  My choices, whether good or bad, led me to this experience—one I will treasure for the rest of my life.

I’d spent my weekdays with the wedding singer, his weekends tied up with various gigs from time to time.  And then I’d spent my weekends with the marketing manager at the pizza place, our feelings for each other growing stronger by the day.  I chose not to keep my affections secret from each man, no matter how uncomfortable most would think it’d be.  I was young and knew just how impacting choices could be on my love life and life in general.

The singer was handsome, and considering my vocal training experience, I simply loved the idea of being with a singer.  Just the thought was attractive to me.  However, he also had his past choices that would heavily impact my future—he could no longer have, nor did he no longer want, more children.  Did I want to choose love over family yet again?  The thought was scary.

The pizza manager was also handsome, and considering how he made me feel when we were together, I simply loved the thought of growing old with a man like him.  Seeing him interact with his son was a damn good way for him to steal my heart.  However, he too was quite a bit older than me, and when we went out on our first date, he talked about nothing else than a woman at his church he had eyes for.  Was he already choosing someone over me?  Did I have any right to take it personally considering I was seeing another man?

Both situations made doubt creep into my mind.  Considering the choices I’d made that put me here, and how deeply I knew they could impact my future, I tried to tread lightly.

One day, after a few months of dating both men and enjoying every minute, my future husband looked at me and told me he loved me.  However, his love came with one condition… he said he couldn’t bear the fact that I was dating another man.

He was asking me to choose.

So, By Choice, I married the man who laughed at me when I brought my resume into a pizza joint.

Because of my choices and the amazing life I have now because of them, I wanted to share a similar story with you all, starting with Sofie—a quirky redhead who had a rough start in life and had to learn how to open her heart.  Through her choices, she found happiness not only with a companion, but within herself.

I hope you enjoy this new #MeetCute story and will learn to cherish all the choices you make in life.

Interview with J.H. Croix, author of Out of Bounds

What can you tell us about your new release, Out of Bounds?

I fell in love with the hero, Ethan, while I was writing this one. It’s a story about two unlikely people falling in love – the head over heels kind of love. Ethan is a player, in more ways than one. Zoe is a brilliant attorney and totally focused on her career. Trust me, sparks fly when their worlds collide!

Who is your favorite fictional character from literature?

This is a tough one. I love to read – anything and everything. Talking literature, I’m a fan of Jane Austen, and I adore Elizabeth from Pride & Prejudice.

Who are your literary heroes working today? Why do you admire them?

JK Rowling. She’s an incredible writer, and I admire her willingness to raise awareness about so many important social issues.

What books do you find yourself returning to again and again?

When I was younger, I probably read the entire Anne of Green Gables series a few hundred times. Now it depends on what mood I’m in. My husband thinks I’m amusing because I read multiple books at a time – from romance to literature to non-fiction. I do love romance and anything by Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Jill Shalvis, Sierra Simone and more. Love, love, love historical romances by Lisa Kleypas and Julia Quinn. Gah! I can’t do justice to this. I have too many favorites!

What TV show have you binge watched?

Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

What's the best advice you've ever received?

You gain nothing if you don’t try.

What scene in Out of Bounds was your favorite to write?

I have two favorites. The opening scene was a lot of fun because the chemistry is humming right away, and Ethan & Zoe are such different characters. My other favorite is later in the book, close to the end, where both of them are emotionally vulnerable in recognizing the depth of their feelings for each other. It leads to a steamy scene in the car, which was intense and fun to write.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

I’ll quote Winnie the Pooh here: A little consideration, all little thought for others, makes all the difference. (A.A. Milne)

Genuine kindness is underrated, so I try to keep that in mind no matter what I’m doing.

Interview with Melody Anne & Chris Alan, authors of Dance in the Dark

What can you tell us about your new release, Dance in the Dark?

Dance In The Dark will leave you cringing and on the edge of your seat. Each time you think you have Adam figured out, the story has a twist. - Chris

This is my first thriller and I love that the killer is so twisted. I also love that he’s someone you want to hate but you can’t. He has a story, just as we all do, and you will want to know his story. In book 2, Chris and I wrote it like we were the characters. This series is the most fun I’ve had writing in a long time! - Melody

What's the last book you read?

I read all the time. I read romance, thrillers, YA, New Adult. I consume all I can. The last book I actually read was a JS Scott book since we did a project together not long ago - Melody

What or who inspired you to become an author?

This question is always so tough to answer. But the main inspiration was actually my daughter. She was in middle school and wrote a 60K word book, and it was good! I realized if this was something I was ever going to try, it was now or never. I couldn’t believe how well it went for me. - Melody

What's your favorite thing about writing?

My favorite thing about writing is becoming each character as I tell their story. And the peace and quiet of the job, LOL - Chris

My absolute favorite thing about writing is the fact that everywhere I look, there’s a new story!! I no longer see a person sitting on a hill. I see a person deep in thought as they write a love-letter to a soldier who they haven’t seen in five years. I see people, places, items in a new way. Everyone and everything has a story just waiting to be told. - Melody

BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?

Easy, flying - Chris

To read minds!! I know, I know, this is too cliché, but seriously, if I could open people’s heads up and look inside without doing damage, I soooo would. It drives me insane not being able to know what people are thinking about when they tell me one thing and I know that’s not what they really think or feel. So yes, I will choose to be a mind-reader - Melody

What's in your Netflix queue?

Dexter, The Ranch, and Breaking Bad. A little bit of crazy with a touch of humor - Chris

The Ranch, season 2. My hubby is patiently waiting for me to finish my deadlines so I can get back into watching that with him. I’m not a big TV person at all! Which is a huge change. I used to watch way too much television. But I’m obsessed with YouTube right now!! Almost every night before bed, I will watch an hour or so of scary stories on YouTube as I do puzzles on the table or on my iPad. - Melody

What scene in Dance in the Dark was your favorite to write?

Wow! Again, another tough question. I love the dark stuff. I really, really, really love the dark stuff. I think my favorite scene was the prologue. He’s just so twisted. I loved writing the scene from Janice’s POV too since I had to be in Adam’s head so much. I love how Chris and I do this book, though. I love going back and forth with him on it. It’s been a fun adventure. - Melody

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

"Life is inherently risky. There is only one big risk you should avoid at all costs, and that is the risk of doing nothing." - Chris

For sure!! I have quotes all over my office, my garage, which is my gym, and my house. My favorite saying is “Dance like nobody is watching.” I haven’t lived that enough in my life. But I do more and more as each day passes. Life is too short to care what haters think of you. I have never once looked at a person who is smiling, laughing and/or dancing and thought they looked dumb. I have looked at them and wanted to join in. So now I do. Now I only want to be with those who will join in with me. I want to dance in my car, in the rain, in different countries. I want to dance for me and only me as if no one is watching. I’m a much happier person that way. - Melody

Interview with Sienna Parks, author of Mustang Daddy

What can you tell us about your new release, Mustang Daddy?

Mustang Daddy is my fourth release with Prism Heart Press, and I am so excited to share it with everyone. As a native Scot, moving to Texas was a daunting experience for me. It has become home for me and my family, and I wanted to write something that could honor that transition for us. This book is not only sexy with a lot of southern charm, it’s also emotional, and heartfelt. I think fiction allows us to reflect on truths in our own lives, and Mustang Daddy takes the reader on a journey. There are definitely elements of my own path over the past year in there. I’m really proud of how it turned out, and I hope readers love Maddox and A.B. as much as I do.

What's the last book you read?

The War of Art, by Stephen Pressfield. I did a lot of work last year that focused on the principles of martial arts and philosophies like The Art of War by Sun Tsu. This book is a motivational text for anyone who is creative – writers, actors, even entrepreneurs. It’s about getting over the idea of “inspiration.” As a writer, we often procrastinate, waiting for an epiphany to strike. This book is a great tool to teach yourself to be positive, and overcome that negative inner voice. I would most definitely recommend it to friends.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

  • The Time Traveler’s Wife, by Audrey Niffenegger is the first that springs to mind. I was completely blown away the first time I read it. The complexity of her timelines, and the attention to detail required to put it off is astounding.
  • Wuthering Heights, by Emily Bronte is a firm favorite of mine. I studied it at University, so my copy is dog-eared with notes in the margins and post-it notes everywhere.
  • Persuasion, by Jane Austen is one of the first romance novels that really sucked me in. I wrote a paper on it for school, and I just loved the fact that it was a true second chance love story.
  • Fifty Shades of Grey, by E.L. James, has to be on the list. I wouldn’t consider it the best writing by any stretch, but I really fell in love with the characters. It came along at a time in my life when I needed to remember that I’m a woman and a wife – that my husband desires me. For that reason alone, it will always be in my top five.
  • The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins. I devoured this trilogy in three days while on vacation in Italy. When I turned the final page, I had the worst book hangover of my life! I honestly felt like I didn’t know what to do with myself. That’s a true sign of an epic read.

You're hosting a literary dinner party. Which three writers are invited?

First on the list would be Steven King. The man is a legend. I would love to sit down with him and pick his brain about anything and everything to do with writing.

Second would be Kristen Proby. I love the way she writes. It seems so effortless. I would really enjoy comparing methods of inspiration with her.

Final choice would be S.C. Stephens. From the moment I met Kellan Kyle in Thoughtless, I haven’t been able to shake him. He has imprinted in my mind as one of the ultimate book boyfriends. I would really like to fan girl over that series with her!

What is a typical day like for you?

I have two kids that are currently in the phase of life where I act as a taxi service most days. I attempt to write while they’re at school, with my fur baby by my side, but most of the time, inspiration strikes in the evening when the kids are in bed. I try to balance being a mom, a writer, a friend, a wife, and a self-promoter on social media. Some days I fall woefully short in all things, but there are those rare days when the stars align and I feel like I can conquer the world.

Where is your happy place? Why does it bring you joy?

I have two. The first one is cuddling up on the sofa with my hubby, kids, and dog, watching a movie and just enjoying their company.

My second happy place, can go with me wherever I roam. It’s that corner of my mind where all my fictional characters live. When you get that spark of inspiration and can’t do anything else until you sit down and type – it feels like I can fly!

What scene in Mustang Daddy was your favorite to write?

There was a particularly emotional scene in the book. I don’t want to give any spoilers, but I would say it was my favorite to write. It deals with love and loss, and the relationships in our lives that can feel out of our control at times. Coming out of a difficult year, it definitely provided me with some much needed catharsis.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

I recently lost a dear friend to brain cancer. I was working with him on a book about his life journey, and the business he built over the past ten years. My mantra is his whole philosophy on life – Not Dead Can’t Quit. I’ve been through a lot of tough times in the past ten years, and have pulled through when experts didn’t think it was possible. I thought for so many years that surviving was enough, but I’ve come to realize that being a survivor isn’t about luck, it’s about refusing to give up, even when it feels like there’s no hope left. If I’m alive and there’s a breath in my body, then I have a chance to influence my life, my decisions, and how I respond to whatever life throws my way. Not Dead Can’t Quit.

Interview with Imani King, author of The Cowboy's Baby

What can you tell us about your new release, The Cowboy's Baby?

With 'The Cowboy's Baby,' I'm returning to the Corbett billionaire family that I first introduced in 2015. The brothers all had their stories told but I've been hankering to write western lately and the idea just popped into my head one day - why not give the Corbett cousins their own books? Set in the country, but featuring the same sexy, brooding alphas that my readers love? Billionaires don't always wear suits and live in downtown penthouses! The Cowboy's Baby is my version of a good old-fashioned romance, without skimping on any of the heat fans know to expect from me

What's on the top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

Outlander, A Song of Ice and Fire Series, anything by Stephen King, Jane Eyre, The Secret History.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

Stephen King! It feels like people are starting to appreciate him now, in a way they maybe didn't in the past. He seems to have an almost magical ability to make his books 'readable' - the most mundane scene or everyday event and somehow he manages to turn it into a total page-turner. I'd love to ask him how he does that.

What's on your writing desk?

Phone, mug of lemon and ginger tea, lip gloss, notepad and pen - not much else. My desk is directly in front of a window and I like to keep it clear of clutter - an organized workspace is, for me, an organized mind.

What's a typical day like for you?

Typical weekday? Most days I get up at about 6:30 and go for a run before it gets too hot - I like that time of day, something about the dawn light and the calm before the rush hour traffic usually puts me in a good state of mind. After that I take care of errands, of which there are always many - I'm one of those people who needs to have everything taken care of and put away before I can get down to work - or fun.

Most of the morning is spent writing and/or researching, and sometimes I'll take a short nap in the early afternoon. I live within walking distance of a few close friends and we often drop by each other's houses unannounced for an early dinner or a walk in the local park. I really make an effort not to live too hectically, even though that's not always possible. If I don't see friends in the evening, I'll go to a yoga class or just chill out by myself and catch up on whatever TV series I'm currently binging on (I'm really excited about the return of Game of Thrones right now!). It's not the most exciting life, but I love it. If I've got work I love and friends around me, I find I don't need to be bungee-jumping in my free time. Not that there's anything wrong with that!

What's the best advice you've ever received?

Never give up. It's familiar to the point of banality and for that reason I think it might get overlooked sometimes, or dismissed as 'too obvious' when it's anything but. Nothing comes without hard work. No one's life is free of struggles or obstacles. All any of us can do is pick ourselves back up, over and over, keep trying, keep going.

What scene in The Cowboy's Baby was your favorite to write?

Am I allowed to say all of them? OK, that would be cheating. I think my favorite scenes to write were the ones where Tia and Dallas are getting to know each other, realizing their preconceived notions about what a 'city girl' or a 'cowboy' are supposed to be out of the way and really starting to see the other person. There's a lot of humor in their early interactions, and I admit I laughed at quite a few of my own jokes while writing. Of course, the final scene was also lovely to write, but I can't say anything about that without giving it all away!

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

"And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom." - This is an Anais Nin quote that I read recently - it speaks to me in general but it also applies neatly to The Cowboy's Baby and the theme of not allowing fear or past hurt to keep you closed off from like or love.
