Interview with Kira Blakely, author of Surprise Package

What can you tell us about your new release, Surprise Package?

It’s Christmas themed and features what’s probably my favorite alpha out of all my books. He’s so addictive. I love him to bits!

What advice would you give your teenage self?

Right now, I’m reading Big Daddy by Rye Hart and Astrophysics for People in a Hurry by Neil DeGrasse Tyson – mixing that romance with a little science. Let’s just say I’ve got something interesting planned for the future.

Who is your favorite fictional character from literature?

Rhett and Scarlett from Gone With the Wind!

Which books would we be surprised to find on your shelves?

That I even get to do it in the first place. And that people actually enjoy what I write.

If you could have dinner with anyone, alive or dead, who would you choose and why?

Stephen King – you can’t not invite him. Jane Austen – May I, Mr. Darcy? Nora Roberts.

What are you currently craving?

My superpower is the ability to know exactly what turns you on.

What scene in Surprise Package was your favorite to write?

Most of the scenes from Samson’s Point of View were my favorite to write. Okay, I might be a little in love with him too, at this point, but why not, right? Probably, the very last scene… I can’t go into detail without totally spoiling it, but let’s just say, Samson shows his true colors.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

The grass may be greener on the other side, but it needs more mowing. (Grass is not a euphemism in this case, unless you want it to be, haha).

Interview with Stephen Perkins, author of Sorcerers' Dynasty

What can you tell us about your new release, Sorcerers' Dynasty?

Sorcerers’ Dynasty deals with the growing philosophical quandary of the relationship  between humanity and artificial intelligence. Through posing the fundamental question of nature versus nurture, the big reveal concerning the true identity of the protagonist in Sorcerers’ Dynasty poses a mythological archetype in a heroic role normally designated as a villainous force for evil. In the end, after considering the thought provoking content of the narrative, the reader may be forced to ultimately question the role of the media, government, as well as science and technology.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

Although this list is by no means definitive in terms of what could be considered the best books one has ever read, the following could be considered to have made a seminal cultural impact or perhaps the most influential on one’s development as a professional writer:

  • Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens
  • The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald
  • Carrie, Steven King
  • A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens
  • 1984, George Orwell

What fictional literary world would you most like to visit?

The most fascinating fictional literary world one would wish to visit that comes immediately to mind would be the world skillfully built in the narrative of Jurassic Park.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

If one were fortunate enough to be posed as the host of a literary talk show host I suppose my first guest might be Steven King, if only to provoke some discussion of the intricate and perhaps inherent relationship between the human subconscious and the concept of fear.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

As a writer one gets to play the role of a god or creative force, creating a new world no one has visited before with the power to decide the epic fate of fictional characters; who lives, and who dies, who shall taste triumph or ultimate ignominy.

BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?

As a writer one is already a superhero, in that one possesses the god-like power to create and destroy entire worlds, and decide the fate of who lives or dies.

What scene in Sorcerers' Dynasty was your favorite to write?

Writing the entirety of Sorcerers’ Dynasty was most enjoyable, but if forced to choose one scene that may be considered a creative favorite, it could be the big reveal towards the latter part of the book during the ‘big reveal’ where the reader is faced with shockingly discovering the true identity of the book’s protagonist, Dan Sheraton.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

If there is one motto one lives by as a writer, it is that imagination is truly one of the highest of human virtues.

Interview with Mya O'Malley, author of The House that Adelia Built

What can you tell us about your new release, The House that Adelia Built?

I’m so excited for this release. The House that Adelia Built spins a tale about beauty and isolation on a seaside island.  This was not only one of my favorite stories to write, but definitely my most intense.

I feel that with this story, the reader gets to enjoy a thriller, mystery, ghost story, and a bit of romance, all wrapped together.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

Only five? But seriously, I just love reading so many authors and genres; so this will be tough. Here goes:

  • Liane Moriarty: What Alice Forgot
  • Nicholas Sparks: The Notebook
  • E. Hinton: The Outsiders
  • James Patterson – Along Came A Spider
  • James Patterson- Kiss the Girls

Who is your favorite fictional character from literature?

I have so many favorite fictional characters, it’s hard to pinpoint my favorite, but there is one who is such a fascinating role model. I love the character of Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games. She is an amazing heroine. She’s got it all– Katniss is independent, loyal, caring, strong, and courageous.

Katniss puts her needs to the side for her friends, family, and community. She proves this by risking her own life so that her little sister can have a chance at her own childhood. I like the fact that young people have a role model like Katniss to look up to.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

This would be so amazing.  Among the first guests would have to be Liane Moriarty. I adore all of her books.  Liane Moriarty has a way of sucking you into her world as if you were right there, experiencing everything as if you were the characters. The way her protagonists think and view the world is so relatable and familiar. Her stories always have surprising twists and characters and plots that stay with you long after the story is finished.

I would love to interview Ms. Moriarty  and learn about how she plots out her books and unforgettable characters.

What is a typical day like for you?

During the week, I wake early to go to work. I’m a full-time special education teacher; I love having the opportunity to work with my students and teach them reading and writing skills. It’s so exciting to enjoy some of my favorite childhood stories with my students and break down the different literary elements. It’s like reliving the stories all over again.

When I arrive home at the end of each workday, I typically run errands before trying to fit in some writing time. It can be challenging some days to carve in the time to write, so I do the best I can until the weekend comes along.

When the weekend comes, I love waking early to write, promote my books, and interact with other authors and readers on social media.

Being a teacher means I have the summers off and some chunks of time to dedicate to my writing throughout the year as well.  Love that!

If you had to pick one place to vacation for the rest of your life, where would you choose?

I’ve had the chance to visit some pretty amazing places throughout the years; among them Mexico, Costa Rica, Aruba, St. Lucia, Puerto Rico, Florida Keys, Block Island, and more.

As much as I’ve loved these gorgeous spots, if I had to pick one place to vacation for the rest of my life, I would choose Cape May, N.J.

Why Cape May? First of all, besides being located along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean and having beautiful beaches, Victorian homes, and lots of charm, Cape May is also special to me because I grew up vacationing and visiting Cape May every year, sometimes several times a year, even in the middle of the winter.

My grandparents owned a second home in Cape May Point. I have such wonderful memories of time spent with my family and my grandmother, just walking the beach, colleting shells, and building life-long memories.

As an adult, whenever I visit, I’m pulled back in time and I feel like I’m home.

What scene in The House that Adelia Built was your favorite to write?

There were so many scenes I enjoyed writing in this book. The character Hope was so complex, as she had layers of issues that were difficult to resolve and work through.

Hope’s relationships with others suffered as a result of her complexity. Because of her quirks and her fears, Hope led a sheltered, isolated life; similar, yet so different from my parallel character, Adelia, who dated back to the 1800’s.

I loved telling both their stories and weaving them together, but there was one scene in particular that I would choose as being right up there amongst my most memorable.

One of my absolute favorite scenes to write was the climax towards the end of the book. Throughout the book, everything built up to the scene in the lighthouse with Augustus. My protagonist changed during her journey in this book, and what you see in this scene is raw, vulnerable, primitive emotion.

I can’t say much more without spoiling this scene, but it’s something that was waiting to happen and there was no other way around it.  This scene was so different for me to write, and I felt that it challenged me as an author, brining me outside of my comfort zone.

Sylvie Fox discusses her new release, Ready For Her Cameo

By Sylvie Fox

One day an author emails me. She’s one of those friends with a million good ideas, so I tend to drop whatever I’m doing and listen.

In her email she proposes a great project. How about a mysterious cameo appearing in multiple books sparking off a romance?

The idea got under my skin and I ran with it. Even coming up with a little poem etched on the back of the jewelry that we could all use.

Love has this jet to which she clings

With ivory and circling locks about

Bone within silver to cast fear out

Love once found has need of no such thing

Set it free on a pair of dauntless wings

For reasons I can’t remember the project never got off the ground, but the idea kept bouncing around in my head popping up every so often. I even started writing the book, only to put it down and work on other more urgent projects.

Fast forward a few years and the #meetcute idea comes along and my first thought was I have to resurrect Sabrina and Henry because their meet cute is lovely. Like other books I’ve written, it all starts with a dog.

Sabrina is a jewelry designer who is on a path to either the greatest high or low of her career. She finds an antique cameo and her life changes in a way she never expected. I can’t wait for readers to discover the magic a cameo can bring. Also a big thanks to my friend who came up with the idea, I had a cameo made for her this summer and sent it as a surprise. I’ll be forever grateful.

Happily, I’m already working on the next book in the series: Cameo Appearance starring none other than Sabrina’s best friend Mona Love.

After you read it, be sure to contact me and let me know what you think. Ready for Her Cameo is available at all retailers

Interview with Willow Winters, author of Damaged

What can you tell us about your new release, Damaged?

Well, the first thing is that I wrote it with my heart and I wanted the pain that this couple goes through to be very present for the reader.  My main early feedback is that their hearts ACHED for both of them and that Evan, my hero and the husband in this case, made them all sorts of wrecked.  And it made me happy to hear that (I know I'm mean) because I cried a LOT writing this book.

What advice would you give your teenage self?

Oh gosh - steer clear of men named Adam.  I made that mistake more than once.  Sorry, Adams of the world!

Who is your favorite fictional character from literature?

Too hard to pick one!  I have to say that I do love Edward Cullen (how can you not!). Although I saw the movies first, and I was actually rooting for Jacob! **runs and hides**

Which books would we be surprised to find on your shelves?

Hmmm Maybe Lipstick Jungle would be a little surprising?  Or how about the Hobbit? Is that shocking?

If you could have dinner with anyone, alive or dead, who would you choose and why?

Probably my grandmother on my father's side.  She passed in 2001 when I was only 12 so she missed a lot of my life.  But the main reason I'd want to talk to her is because she always wanted to be an author.  She had manuscripts in her bedroom.  Obviously publishing back then wasn't as easy as it is now.  So I'd love to hear her stories now, because back then I was too young for her to tell me them.  I have a feeling my grandmom wrote romance.

What are you currently craving?

Salts - It's super late right now and my late night cravings are salty!  Maybe Pretzels or dark chocolate with sea salt... and now I need to go for just a moment before I finish this interview.

What scene in Damaged was your favorite to write?

My favorite scene is when Kat caves in, but knows it's only for one night.  It's hot and sexy, but full of emotion because she's made the final decision and just wants a memory to hold on to where she feels the love she knows they each have for each other, even though after that night, they'll never be together again.  I got teary-eyed all over again.  Don't worry, I believe everyone deserves a HEA.  It's why I write.  My lips are sealed after saying that!
