Interview with K.K. Allen, author of Waterfall Effect
What can you tell us about your new release, Waterfall Effect?
Waterfall Effect is a haunting romantic suspense with underlying themes of second chance romance, mental health issues, and forbidden love. The setting of the majority of the story is very much a character in itself, being set in Balsam Grove, a small and seemingly idyllic small town in the Appalachian Mountains. Readers are loving the angst that comes with a good slow burn romance and the philosophical undertones that play into the title of the story. So far, this seems to a favorite for my readers, and I couldn’t be more ecstatic about that.
What or who inspired you to become an author?
It’s funny. I’ve been getting this question a lot lately, and I always answer it the same. “Because I want to tell a story, no matter the form. Be it dancing, or video editing, or managing a graphic design crew at work.” But I thought about it again the other day while trying to find something to watch on Netflix and realized, no. I want to write stories/books because there are always instances where I’m looking for a particular type of story, and I can’t seem to find it. And then it clicked. That is exactly what I want to write. What doesn’t already exist.
What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?
That is ridiculously unfair. I’m going to list the first five that come to mind when I think of “favorite.” Remember Me, Sophie Kinsella – Bright Side, Kim Holden – Firefly Lane, Kristin Hannah – The Notebook, Nicholas Sparks – Gayle Forman, If I Stay
Who is your favorite couple from literature?
Allie and Noah from The Notebook. Call me a sucker, I don’t care. It’s a beautiful romance with all the elements I adore.
What's your favorite thing about writing?
Writing for me is the most relaxing thing I could ever do. Probably because my best writing is written in solitude, social media distractions removed, and I’m completely in the mind-set of my story and characters. I find it incredibly easy to spend hours at a time researching all the elements of a story, whether that be human psyche or creating the world they live in. It’s therapeutic and the best food for my soul.
What's on your writing desk?
Watermelon Perrier, which is a total accident because everyone knows I drink grapefruit Perrier when writing and editing. My printed manuscript for Waterfall Effect. My kitten, Chloe—yes, really! Haha. She loves to place her palm on my hands when I type. Thank you cards, left over swag from book signings, notepads, and pens. Oh, and a file with my tax documents in it, which is what I’ll be tackling next J.
What scene in Waterfall Effect was your favorite to write?
Usually, there’s a scene that sticks out as my favorite because it was one of the key scenes I thought of while plotting the story. Waterfall Effect was different because this book took plots of plotting and rewriting until I got it perfect. In the end, I think my favorite scene was an intense conversation between the hero and heroine regarding their separation for the past seven years and all the reasons why. Everything finally comes to a head, and the scene is jam-packed with intense emotion, sexual tension, and the beautiful landscape of Balsam Grove, North Carolina.

Interview with M.D. Massey, author of Druid Justice
What can you tell us about your new release, Druid Justice?
Druid Justice is the fifth book in my Junkyard Druid urban fantasy series and the first book in the second Colin McCool tetralogy. In this installment in the series, I’m introducing a new four-novel story arc, new stakes, new challenges, and new villains. The novel is intended to be an entry point for readers who are new to the series (although I recommend starting with the first book, Junkyard Druid), and it also serves as a continuation of Colin’s story.
In Druid Justice, Colin is continuing his druid apprenticeship with his mentor, Finnegas, while attempting to track down a serial killer who is targeting fae. He’s also navigating life as a shifter, a condition that comes with its own unique complications, advantages, and drawbacks. And, Colin is navigating his relationship with his current girlfriend Belladonna, while being haunted by his deceased former girlfriend, Jesse.
Readers who are new to the series should note that each novel is a self-contained story. And yes, there are questions that arise in each novel that are resolved in later novels in the series. However, readers won’t be left feeling like the plot wasn’t resolved within the pages of that novel.
Which books would we be surprised to find on your shelves?
I have a number of copywriting manuals on my bookshelves, some of which are quite rare and hard to find. Obviously, I acquired them so I could learn how to write sales copy, which I did for years in my other gig as a small business start-up and marketing consultant. I also have a number of survival and disaster preparedness books, which I read both for research and for personal pleasure. And, I own a substantial collection of martial arts guides and manuals, which I collected over the years during the decades I spent running martial art schools.
What or who inspired you to become an author?
Like most authors, I love to read, and if I had a vice it would be buying way too many books. My mother was a teacher, and during my pre-school years, she would let me pick out a Little Golden Book whenever we went to the store. I was reading books like Homer’s Odyssey and The Silmarillion before I was tall enough to see over the counter at the public library. These days I can’t walk into a bookstore without leaving with an armful of books.
Avid readers tend to become aspiring writers, and I was no exception. When I was in my twenties a journalist friend encouraged me to write and publish a non-fiction book, so I did. By my late thirties I’d written and published a few moderately successful non-fiction works, so I thought, “How hard could it be to write a fiction novel?”
As it turned out, very hard indeed. I took a few writing courses, read a lot of books on writing fiction, and stumbled through a few unfinished manuscripts. Then in 2013, I read James Scott Bell’s Plot & Structure, and it was like a light bulb went off inside my head. I completed and published my first novel in December of that same year, and I haven’t looked back since.
If you were a teacher, what book would you assign to your class?
It depends on what I was teaching. If I were teaching creative writing, I’d start with the book by Bell I mentioned previously. If I were teaching literature, I’d tell my students to read whatever interested them.
For example, my son recently fell in love with Dav Pilkey’s Dog Man books. Before those books came along, we couldn’t get him to read much at all on his own. Now, he reads every day. So, I’d assign my students the task of finding a book they would enjoy reading, and then instruct them to read that book for the sheer enjoyment of it.
What's a typical day like for you?
I wake up between 6 am and 7 am, even though I don’t have to. I drink some coffee and check email first thing, then I get on the treadmill for half an hour, during which time I take care of day job stuff. After that, I listen to writing and publishing podcasts while I shower and get dressed.
Once I’ve made myself presentable, I get more caffeine in me before hitting my writing desk by 9 am. I write until I hit my word count goal for the day, taking five-minute breaks every hour. After I’m done writing for the day, I eat lunch and do more day job activities, then I train martial arts or I read. By then it’s time to get my kid from school, so I spend time with him until his mom gets home.
After that, I do whatever additional work I need to do that day, or I relax by reading or watching TV before I go to bed at no later than 10 pm. I used to be a night owl, but these days if I go to bed past 10 pm I’m a wreck the next day and my writing output suffers. So, it’s early to bed and early to rise the next day to do it all over again.
BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?
Flight, because I’ve always wanted to fly. In fact, I wanted to be a pilot but my vision was too poor. So, definitely flight, and preferably at super speeds, because necessarily that superpower comes with other superpowers, like limited invulnerability and stamina due to the stresses of high-speed flight at altitude. I think you can tell that I’ve really thought this through.
What scene in Druid Justice was your favorite to write?
Probably the fight scene at the vampire garden party. It has just the right mix of humor and violence, which is what I think makes for a good fight scene. That’s probably why I loved shows like The A-Team as a kid, and why the Blade movies are among my all-time favorites. To me, there’s nothing quite as good as a snarky hero kicking butt, which was what I was aiming for when I wrote that scene.
Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?
Just be kind, which is the simplest and most basic thing ever. It costs nothing, and it’s amazing how a small act of kindness or word of encouragement can brighten another person’s day.
My father-in-law was a great example of this. He recently passed on, and when he was alive he was an incredibly unassuming man. But after he died, people kept telling us story after story about how he spoke a kind word once or helped them in some small way, and time and again they said it made a huge difference in their lives.
I just think that’s such an incredible legacy to leave behind, and I hope when I go I will have made that sort of a positive impact on the people I’ve known.

Interview with Tiago De Silva, author of Reading Seraphina
What can you tell us about your new release, Reading Seraphina?
It’s a work of historical fiction that introduces a strong, captivating young heroine in the form of Seraphina. She has an unusual past that confronts her in the present day both suddenly and intensely. She has a lot to deal with, and fortunately finds some allies along the way.
What or who inspired you to become an author?
I was in a serious rut in my life back in 2015. A staff member saw this and gave me the idea of doing a side project that would bring me some joy. We went through things that I love, and I came up with Disney movies and history. He proposed the idea of writing a screenplay for a Disney movie based around historical events. It lit me up. I did a little work on the outline then but it wasn’t until February 2017 that I really got started. I decided on a book instead of a screenplay, and was surprised by how much I loved the process of writing it. I now want to write many more books, including at least two more on Seraphina. Plus, I do want to get this into Disney so we can make some magic with it.
Name a book that you feel has impacted your life significantly. Why was it so impactful?
Half The Sky. I had no idea about the plight of women throughout a lot of the developing world. I’m fairly well informed about such things, but that book opened my eyes, and my heart. The eradication of slavery is, as a result, a cause hugely close to my heart.
What fictional literary world would you most like to visit?
I’m not sure if this counts, but the Star Wars universe. I wouldn’t just visit either, I’d stay...and get myself an orange lightsaber.
What's a typical day like for you?
Up early, practice yoga and meditate. I take myself through other mindfulness exercises, then the rest of the day has usually been planned the day before - some reading, maybe some singing, time to relax and of course, eat some delicious food.
If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?
Meditate, or if I could have the hour at sunset, I’d just sit there watching the beautiful colors and shapes for an extra hour.
What scene in Reading Seraphina was your favorite to write?
The one where Seraphina and Quintus go out in the boat. I’m a total romantic, and that’s where the two really start falling for each other.
Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?
Simply to be the best version of myself that I can be, every day. This isn’t the idea that has been put out there of being happy and positive all the time, but rather to seek real growth and evolution. That involves confronting inner demons and things about myself that I’ve previously not been aware of or been willing to admit. It is hard work some days, but thoroughly worth it. I believe it has a direct correlation to how great my life can be, and how much I can contribute to others. Those are the two things I am most interested in.

Interview with Annelies George, author of Quest to the Unknown
What can you tell us about your new release, Quest to the Unknown?
Quest to the Unknown is the first part in a series of five fiction novels evolving around two heroines, a Dutch reporter and her child, who both survive an upcoming natural disaster, leaving only a few alive. The first book is introducing the main characters and starts with up-and-coming Dutch reporter Jessie Golden, who is unaware she is destined to fulfill a life mission that is crucial for the fate of this planet. On the eve of her holiday she finds a folder full of information on a mysterious woman named Nancy, leading her to an unexpected quest. In parallel, she believes her soon to be father in law has ties with the mafia and she starts an investigation that points to the murky world of the mob, where money and extortion are causing death and destruction. However, nothing is what is seems. At the end of part 1, Jessie is totally unaware of what really happened. The readers will think they got the whole story, but do they really?!
If Quest to the Unknown is turned into a movie, who would you pick to pay Jessie?
Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman, Fast & Furious 6, Keeping up with the Joneses)
What or who inspired you to become an author?
I already started to write as a child, using the images of a collection of postcards as source of inspiration. At a later age my friend Wil, who also was one of the few females working in the finance world, and my PA, Carla always had to laugh about the stories I told relating to the business encounters with men. They encouraged me to put my stories on paper. One thing led to another with the Jessie Golden series as a result!
Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?
My first guest would be Dan Brown. The question I would ask: is everything you write entirely fiction or is there a message you would like to pass through the character of Robert Langdon?
What's your favorite thing about writing?
to create a fiction story that’s a page-turner with an unexpected end that will make you wonder what will happen next. In addition, I like to write a plot where there is much more to the story than meets the eye. What I mean by this is that I would like to share my thoughts and findings on different topics, such as the coherence of energy displayed in the increasing natural disasters and the link with our behavior or the interesting Theory of Quantum Physics that could explain why people are joining terrorist organizations. I post video’s on those topics on my facebook page; www.facebook.com/anneliesgeorgeauthor.
If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?
That's very easy: writing!
What scene in Quest to the Unknown was your favorite to write?
In chapter 22 Between Heaven and Earth, when Jessie is in a coma and discovers who “Palyantho” is.
Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?
I initiated Loveable Light in 2016, focusing on the powerful light of love that we’re born with, but tend to forget due to the way society is working. Therefore I always say: “use the light within”.
