Interview with Daniel Sugar, author of Salem Burning

What can you tell us about your new release, Salem Burning?

“Salem Burning” is a fast-paced, brand-new take on the Salem witch trials. This time, the women win. She Gets Revenge!

In 1692, a disreputable young man accuses his fiancee of witchcraft. Little does he know, she really is a witch.

What books are currently on your night stand?

I’m currently re-reading a Sidney Sheldon novel, “The Other Side Of Midnight”. Such a page-turner! Sidney was amazing.

Who are your literary heroes working today? Why do you admire them?

I really believe that J.K. Rowling is the Charles Dickens of the 21st century. She has a magnificent mind. I love the way she conjures characters - they’re unusually well-done. You really feel you know the people she fashions out of ink.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

I like getting lost in the story; becoming part of the world I’m writing about.

What is a typical day like for you?

I like to write for hours, 14, 15, 16, hours, until I’m so tired I don’t know what the words mean.

BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?

Invisibility. Writers are professional observers of the human condition so that superpower would be invaluable.

What scene in Salem Burning was your favorite to write?

I really enjoyed writing the “Salem Burning” epilogue because it foreshadows the return of Lilly Parris.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Treat people with respect.

Interview with Lauren Blakely, author of Come As You Are

What can you tell us about your new release, Come As You Are?

Come As You Are is a sexy romantic comedy about a brilliant and charming sexy nerd hero who's an (almost) billionaire, the clever and loyal woman he falls for, and they way their worlds collide at a masquerade party in a smoldering secret rendez-vous...

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

Harry Potter of course!
I also love A River Runs Through It by Norm Maclean
Anna and The French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
If I Stay by Gayle Forman
Beautiful Stranger by Christina Lauren

Who is your favorite couple from literature?

That's a brutal question! The answer changes depending on the year and what I'm reading. I do love Hannah and Will from Beautiful Player though!

What is a typical day like for you?

Mostly it consists of feeding and walking dogs, hunting for chocolate, and answering text messages from my kids about where they left their homework. In between them, I endeavor to bang out a few thousand words 🙂

Where is your happy place? Why does it bring you joy?

Dogs are my happy place. I have four dogs and I regularly foster dogs too for a local rescue. The love of a dog is so pure and honest, and they bring me complete delight and true happiness.

What scene in Come As You Are was your favorite to write?

The scene at the masquerade ball!! Swoon. The moment when Flynn and
Sabrina first meet in their costumes and feel that electric chemistry!

Interview with Ryan Hauge, author of Be Careful What You Joust For

What can you tell us about your new release, Be Careful What You Joust For?

Be Careful What You Joust For is an epic fantasy novel with a little something for everyone.  There’s a murder mystery, humor, romance, and of course, a joust.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I’ve always loved creating stories.  When I was a kid, that took the shape of forcing my older brother to play D&D type games with me using my Lego collection for the character and scenery.  But one day after watching The Hobbit with Ivy and my mom, we all challenged each other to see who could write the best fantasy novel.  So we each wrote a fantasy novel.  My first one wasn’t very good, but at that point I knew I wanted to be an author.  Five years later, I teamed up with Ivy and wrote the best book ever: Be Careful What You Joust For.

Which books would we be surprised to find on your shelves?

My shelves are mostly filled with Harlan Coben, Michael Crichton, and David Baldacci hardbacks that my dad got eight copies of for Christmas (he can't seem to wrap his head around the concept of separate lists).  My kindle, on the other hand, is filled with a million romance novels thanks to my wife, Ivy Smoak.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

My favorite thing about writing this book was whenever Ivy finished a chapter and sent it to me for me to read, because her chapters were always the best.  Like when she created Nesta.

What is a typical day like for you?

Most days I wake up around 9, go to town on a bowl of delicious Cinnamon Chex, and then look for my pet squirrel Rat Tail to see if he wants to be fed.  But this morning we went out for a walk and found him dead in the street, so I guess that part of my day isn’t going to happen anymore. 🙁  After that, it really varies quite a bit.  Some days I have to do stuff for my toy company, BrickWarriors.  Other days I get to settle in and write.  Actually, if I’m being completely honest, recently I’ve just been obsessively refreshing the Amazon and Goodreads pages for Be Careful What You Joust For to watch the sales rank and read all the new reviews. It’s kind of unhealthy.

What advice would you give your teenage self?

Definitely to read more and start writing earlier.  It’s such a shame that schools have kids read garbage “classics” rather than helping them find a passion for a genre that they’re interested in.  If not for Harry Potter, I’m not sure I ever would have realized that reading could actually be enjoyable.

What scene in Be Careful What You Joust For was your favorite to write?

Anything with Nesta!  Actually…Ivy wrote about half of those scenes, so maybe I just really liked reading about Nesta.  Especially the scene with the muffins.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Every day I try to get closer to finding my perfect day.  It’s so easy to get into bad habits like spending hours on facebook or just watching TV all day.  But I’ve found that I’m so much happier when the internet is off and I just get to read or write or draw.  Anything creative is so rewarding.

Interview with Carmen Falcone, author of Good Girl Gone Bad

What can you tell us about your new release, Good Girl Gone Bad?

Good Girl Gone Bad is an intense, erotic romance about two people who find love when they weren't expecting it. It's a fun page-turner.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I've always enjoyed writing, since I was a little girl. It's hard to remember a specific event or person who inspired me. It's just what I was meant to be.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

My first guest would be Ryan Gosling. I would first ask questions about his wonderful independent movies I can't get enough of. Then, I'd make the interview really awkward by shamelessly flirting with him. Sigh.

What books are currently on your night stand?

You mean on my kindle? 😉 A raunchy cowboy series by Lorelei James. Love her!

What's your favorite thing about writing?

To be able to step into someone else's shoes.

What is a typical day like for you?

I wake up, take kids to school, come back to my home office or go to a coffee shop for a few hours. I try to get emailing, marketing stuff, social media out of the way then get some writing done. After I'm done with my writing goal for the day (it varies, depending on deadlines), I pick up the kids from school. During the day, there's usually a lot of texting my hubby, making to-do lists that will never get done and browsing celebrity gossip websites.

What scene in Good Girl Gone Bad was your favorite to write?

I loved when Marco takes Lily to, er, a different type of strip club. It's a very hot scene, for sure, but it's fun because she chooses to be herself, and that's what so endearing about her. To know more, you have to read the book.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Do your best. I love to try my hardest when I'm really focused on reaching a goal ( unless, of course, that goal is dieting or working out, but let's not get into that).
