The Story Behind Still Not Love by Nicole Snow

By Nicole Snow

A whirlwind. A sweetness. A sting.

That's how my latest heroine, Faye, describes the man who left her heart in mushy pieces in my brand new romance thriller, Still Not Love. The same man who's come back to save her from the big bad in this tale of love against past tragedies, present tensions, and Mother freaking Nature.

Our whirlwind begins with a hint of a spectacular love lost. I adore second chances, so it's no surprise this book runs away that theme. But it's also a second stab at so much more.

James Nobel, rock hard bodyguard extraordinaire, is the most complex hero I've ever written. He's got a dark secret to unravel and Faye to win back – and somehow, he's got to find time to finish his dead mother's romance novel.

Yikes.

James is the kind of razor blade man I love.

Sharp, yet sophisticated. Dangerous, yet gentle. Alpha as all Hades, yet able to charm panties into vapor.

He's never gotten rid of the love bug for Faye, but raw tragedy made him bury it deep. I knew when I started this story it'd take a mountain to crack him open and let his urge to re-claim her spill out, so of course I went a little crazy with the challenges.

A whole crew of baddies led by a truly devious villain – but you'll have to guess who.

A blinding snowstorm that pins down James and Faye at a luxury resort.

A shocking twist of fate or ten that takes them down the long, hard road back to love.

There's fire and ice to go around here. I adored the heck out of writing their story like I always do, but something else happened while I was bringing Faye and James to the hardest Happily Ever After imaginable.

I fell in love with the whole Enguard Security team again.

Perfect timing because this is the last standalone novel in the arc of the men and women I've been pouring my soul into for the better part of the last year.

Goodbyes are hard. But the only thing that's worse is dragging something out until it becomes bland and lifeless.

I always promised I'd never let that happen with my books. James and Faye give the pages one more memorable sizzle and create a tough act for me to follow with future stories, but of course I'm gonna try!

Can you tell I'm a sucker for hard won love? And wouldn't you agree it's the very best?

I hope you'll offer up your heart for one more wicked wringing – when James and Faye reach their final destination, I promise it's so worth it.

Interview with Taylor Marsh, author of May Be Fatal

What can you tell us about your new release, May Be Fatal?

I took big risks with my latest thriller, including writing the way I hear it. In MAY BE FATAL, I ask readers to go back and forth in history with the characters. The opening chapter occurs in 2009, with the next chapter 'Present Day.' It's a psychic puzzle, a time riddle. As for substance, this excerpt is a hint:

"When we listen to our inner voice, what you call your gut, it teaches us to live beyond our brain. To allow our mind to consider options. To interpret signals. The force from the universe. We sense when something is wrong before we have the facts. Our brain trains us through what we are taught and remember from elders. Our mind deduces the risk-reward quotient. It is our entry into the collective consciousness if we dare to suspend our fears and disbelief." - MAY BE FATAL - Taylor Marsh

What books are currently on your nightstand?

Spare Room, Dreda Say Mitchell

The Missing Mistress, Thomas Fincham

Don’t Look Back, Ben Cheetham

Presidents of War, Michael Beschloss

What advice do you have for your teenage self?

Revel in early artistic successes. Don’t go against your gut. Prepare for winter.

What would you do with an extra hour in the day?

Produce a daily podcast for artists about the business of being creative, including TV, Netflix, & films. Since there isn’t an “extra hour,” I’m plotting to steal an hour to get this done. My iTunes channel reimagined. Stay tuned…

What makes your world go round? Why does it give you joy?

Concocting a world that relates to readers. To translate a woman’s experience into thrillers with psychological heft. It thrills me because I’ve found a way to decipher my life.

What scene in May Be Fatal was your favorite to write?

Serial killer Raymond Drake’s drive through Blackwater Forest: Dead of night. Nature’s wrath. He’s terrified of his own demise. Faces what he can’t control. His own terror.

Interview with JA Huss, author of In To Her

What can you tell us about your new release, In To Her?

In To Her is a very sexy and emotional story about a woman who lost everything and two hit men at a crossroads in their lives when they end up stranded at her bar during a blizzard. It’s a story about second chances, not in relationships, but just life in general. And how three strangers can change their future. It’s also about not giving up because you never know when that change is coming.

What books are currently on your nightstand?

I only listen to audiobooks and right now I’m listening to three:

Polaris Rising: A Novel by Jessie Mihalik

The Worldship Humility by R. R. Haywood

Caliban's War by James S. A. Corey

What advice would you give your teenage self?

Don't change anything.

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?

Netflix and chill, of course

What makes your world go round? Why does it bring you joy?

Being home with my family. And writing--more specifically, finishing a book. I love finishing a book. I also love nature and my life on the ranch. And all dogs give me joy.

What scene in In To Her was your favorite to write?

The epilogue. I always love writing the epilogue the most.

Interview with Seth Ring, author of Terra Nova: Titan

What can you tell us about your new release Terra Nova: Titan?

Nova Terra: Titan is both a deeply personal story and a fun romp through a futuristic fantasy setting. Most of us can relate to the feeling of being an outsider, forced to look in on at a world that seems content to operate without us. The main character of this book explores that idea, doing his best to find his proper place in the world. Despite the serious, underlying theme, this book is meant to entertain and uplift, presenting a hopeful, vibrant world just waiting to be explored.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

Growing up I read books by the shelf-full. Many of my memories of my childhood are tied to what I was reading at the time. My love of reading eventually turned into a love of telling stories to others and writing has been a natural progression of that trend. A few years ago I started writing short stories as a creative outlet and somehow those short stories morphed into close to full-length novels. It wasn’t until I mentioned to my wife that I had a 100,000-word story written and she encouraged me to put it out for other people to read that I ever really considered myself being an author.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

This is a tough question. I’ve read many great books over the years but I can certainly point to a few that stick out as having impacted me deeply. In no particular order, they are The Walking Drum by Louis L’amour, These Old Shades by Georgette Heyer, Foundation by Isaac Asimov, Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl, and A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs. These books and their authors gave me countless hours of joy as a child, not to mention shaping the way I see the world and the way that I write.

Say you’re the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

Sadly, most of my favorite authors are no longer living, but I would love to sit down with any of the modern giants of fiction to talk to them about how they craft characters. I believe strongly that if your characters are real enough, the story will write itself and would love to learn how they go about giving their characters life.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

My favorite thing about writing is getting to explore a new world. Often, the specific details of the worlds I write about don’t exist until they land on the page, which allows me to explore as I go. As I write, I find that the world becomes clearer and more reflective of reality. Even when what I am writing is obvious fantasy, there is always an element of truth in it.

What is a typical day like for you?

Typically, I get up at 5 am and try to write for about an hour before I leave for work. The rest of my day looks fairly typical, with work, family time, and maybe an hour of relaxing before I go to bed at 10 pm. On the weekends I get up between 5 and 6 am and try to get two to three hours of writing in. While my days vary, I try as much as possible to maintain my morning schedule.

What scene in Terra Nova: Titan was your favorite to write?

There is a scene where the main character, Thorn, encounters his first real enemy in the virtual reality world. That scene was really fun for me to write because I got to explore the fact that the game feels like the real world, even though it isn’t. I really enjoyed the interaction between Thorn and his opponent as they test each other out.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

If I had to pick a writing philosophy, it would be twofold. First, there is no need for perfection. If what I am writing brings me joy, then it is worth writing. Second, progress comes through practice. There are few forces more powerful than consistency, and this is especially true as we try to master skills.

Interview with Dima Zales, author of Sleight of Fantasy

What can you tell us about your new release Sleight of Fantasy?

Sleight of Fantasy is the fourth installment in my Sasha Urban series, which follows a young illusionist living in NYC who discovers, after a performance on national television goes terribly wrong, that she possesses very real magical powers. In Sleight of Fantasy, Sasha is finally mastering those powers, while trying to cope with mysterious enemies bent on destroying her, her growing attraction to her boss/mentor, as well as some life-changing revelations about her family lineage.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I’ve always loved reading, and writing is a good next step for book lovers to take, in my opinion.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

This is as hard as trying to pick a favorite food! I love the Amber Chronicles by Roger Zelazny, the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher, the Iron Druid series by Kevin Hearne, Brandon Sanderson's Starlight Archive... that's more than 5 books already 🙂

Say you’re the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

Brandon Sanderson, and I would suggest he clone himself so that his books can come out even faster!

What's your favorite thing about writing?

I love the creative process, especially brainstorming, etc. I'm constantly coming up with fun new ideas, and fleshing them out into full-blown novels is exciting to me.

What is a typical day like for you?

I write, work out, go on walk with my wife, romance author Anna Zaires, during which we brainstorm what we both want to write next, edit what we wrote, do some publishing logistics, go on a bike ride with Anna, and wind down with a little TV.

What scene in Sleight of Fantasy was your favorite to write?

This book takes place in a world inspired by Russian folklore, so I love writing anything that incorporates these legends I heard as a child.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Something I strive for (doesn't mean I've mastered it yet) is from the Silver Linings Playbook: "better to be kind than right."
