Interview with Cate Lawley, author of Fairmont Finds a Body

What can you tell us about your new release, Fairmont Finds a Body?

Fairmont Finds a Body is a small town cozy mystery, but even more it's a story about a woman making a new life for herself and the dog who adores her.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I've always loved stories. I studied German literature (a very long time ago) but eventually followed a different path first studying business, then law, and eventually becoming an attorney. Lori Ryan, a very dear friend, started her own writing career a year before I wrote my first book, and she both convinced me to try novel writing and helped me along the way. I'll be forever grateful for her support.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

I refuse to be pinned down...but only because I can't decide. 🙂 Julia Quinn is one of my favorite writers. Her characters have a kindness that's touching and real. I also adore hockey romance and have become a rabid hockey fan. But I grew up reading the Mrs. Pollifax books, Margery Allingham, Lilian Jackson Braun, Dorothy Sayers, and so many other wonderful mystery writers. I"m sure they're why I love writing cozy mysteries!

Say you’re the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

Julia Quinn. After recovering from my fangirl faint, I would ask her how she crafts such amazing characters. I'm completely in love with the Bridgertons, as are millions of other readers.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

That every story has an end, but also opens up a huge world of possibilities. That I can make up new worlds and populate them with all of my favorite people. That I can use my imagination to entertain others. I'm really not good at picking favorites!

What is a typical day like for you?

I write early in the morning. Once I've reached my daily word count or editing goal, I workout, either jogging or lifting at the gym. My sweet little German Shorthaired Pointer always votes for the jog! Since writing is such a sedentary occupation, even more so than working in an office (which I've also done), I've had to make a serious commitment to staying fit or my writing suffers. I spend the afternoon doing admin and the evening marketing. But I definitely take hockey game evenings off!

What scene in Fairmont Finds a Body was your favorite to write?

Actually, the dedication. I wrote this story a few months after my dog Vegas passed. Fairmont Finds a Body was my way of remembering all of the very best things about him, and the dedication brought all of those great memories into sharper focus.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

I don't, not exactly, but I do pick a goal or theme for each year. Last year was "life is my job," since it was becoming obvious to me that de-prioritizing my health was having a negative impact on my writing. This year is about some financial goals that I have related to sustaining my writing career long-term. I want to keep writing stories well into the future!

Interview with P. Dangelico, author of Nothing But Trouble

What can you tell us about your new release, Nothing But Trouble?

Nothing But Trouble kicks off a brand new New Adult series set in Malibu University and features the sexy championship winning men’s water polo team. Each book in the Malibu University Series is a standalone novel and focuses on one of the players on the team and the young woman he falls for.

What books are currently on your night stand?

Since I primarily read on my Kindle these days, I have a tidy nightstand. However, I’m currently reading K.A Tucker’s One Tiny Lie.

What advice would you give your teenage self?

If I could give my teenage self a bit of advice, it would have to be––go easier on yourself. I think girls have a tendency to be too hard on themselves.

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?

If I had an extra hour each day, I would try to cram two extra hours worth of life i.e. reading, exercising, sleeping. That would be the plan. And then I would inevitably end up writing.

What makes your world go round? Why does it bring you joy?

What brings me joy is hanging out with my furry friends––my dogs and my horse––and writing.

What scene in Nothing But Trouble was your favorite to write?

Our hero, Reagan Reynolds, spends a fair amount of time trying to convince our heroine, Alice Bailey, that he genuinely wants to help her after he almost runs her over with his car. As you can imagine, she’s not immediately fond of the idea and lots of fun banter ensues during those scenes.

Interview with Vera Jane Cook, author of Pleasant Day

What can you tell us about your new release, Pleasant Day?

I can tell you that the book got started from an article I read online. The article was about a body being discovered in a box spring. There was hardly a pause before I started the first chapter of Pleasant Day and then it just took off. The characters seemed to be right there in my head just waiting to be written. I thought it was bizarre about the body in the box spring so I knew my novel had to be somewhat bizarre but based on the horrible truth, one of the problem we have with kids today - bullying.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I was inspired to become an author by the books I was reading at a pretty young age. They were books like A Stone for Danny Fisher, Atlas Shrugged, 79 Park Avenue, The Brother’s Karamazov, The Red and the Black, to name a few. And of course there were those books I was assigned to read in school like A Tale of Two Cities, The Picture of Dorian Grey, Jane Eyre, War and Peace, Wuthering Heights, to name but a few. I loved to read and I loved the way authors weaved a whole new world for me, characters that I loved and situations that kept me involved for hours. Other authors have always been my inspiration.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

I’d say that right at this moment the best 5 books I’ve ever read are The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd, The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski, A Piece of the World by Christina Baker Kline, A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd.

Say you’re the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

I would interview Charlotte and Emily Bronte. I’d want to know what it was like being alive during that time in History and living in the Moors in England. Where did their ideas come from? What inspired their imagination? Where did the idea come from for their books and were their characters based on people they knew? Was it hard to be alive then in terms of being a woman or did their isolation protect them from that? Were they surprised when their books were published?

What's your favorite thing about writing?

My favorite thing about writing is finishing a novel. I love to work with words because I think the English language is beautiful and I love developing characters and putting them in situations and writing the most descriptive sentences I can.

What is a typical day like for you?

A typical day writing for me is getting to it as early as possible. My energy is high in the mornings, as well as my imagination and concentration. I write and I rewrite, often going over the whole book several times, editing and re-editing.

What scene in Pleasant Day was your favorite to write?

My favorite scene in Pleasant Day to write was the very last scene with Angus on Piper Hill after she has visited Millie’s grave. I know this is the last scene in the book and all the characters were a joy to write but this last one is real insight into Pleasant, both her past and her present,as well as her future.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

“Act well your part for there all honor lies.”
