Interview with Eric Asher, author of Forgotten Ghosts

What can you tell us about your new release, Forgotten Ghosts?

Forgotten Ghosts continues Damian's misadventures in the Vesik series. This one took quite a bit more plotting than I normally do because it's setting up events that will impact Damian's world for years to come. That said, we still have the usual mix of humor, food, and sarcasm that come along with the misfits.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I've always enjoyed making up stories, but never really took it seriously until around 2005. I wrote a 200,000 something word trainwreck of a novel that will never see the light of day, but it was a great learning experience. A few years later I started Vesik, and it just stuck. What started as a short story grew into a novel, and then several more. I got hooked on doing all of the historical research for the characters who lived through the Civil War. I attended the 150th anniversary event at Gettysburg, and toured a slew of museums and battlefields. It's given me more ideas than I'll ever have time to write.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

That's a painfully small number, haha. They change over time, but my favorite books at the moment would have to be Black Sun Rising by C.S. Friedman, Silence Fallen by Patricia Briggs, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling, Coraline by Neil Gaiman, and Northworld by David Drake.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

C.S. Friedman - How in the world does she make her characters so vibrant and real? I feel she does it better than almost anyone else out there.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

Creating new worlds, or adding a little bit of magic to our own world.

What is a typical day like for you?

Wake up, day job, tell myself I should be writing more, go home, write, market, exercise, and repeat.

What scene in Forgotten Ghosts was your favorite to write?

The scene with Dirge and Terrence is far and away my favorite scene of the book. I've visited the remains of Greenville a few times over the years. The whole area has a pretty dark history from the times of the Civil War, which is touched on in some of my earlier books. But being able to tie the cemetery into modern times with ghosts and Fae was quite rewarding in itself.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Interview with JA Huss, author of The Dirty Ones

What can you tell us about your new release, The Dirty Ones?

The Dirty Ones is an erotic thriller that surrounds six college friends ten years after graduation. They shared a disturbing experience in their senior year and the book opens with their story on the New York Times bestseller list under the author name “anonymous”. Three of the friends (all women) are now erotica authors and the mystery begins with the question… Which one of them published the book? But they soon realize, even though what they went through was rough, it was good too. Because it brought them all together. The book is erotic in nature and there are MFMF love scenes between the friends as they begin to remember what happened to them while discussing the book.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I was a non-fiction writer before I wrote fiction. My graduate degree is in forensic toxicology but after I finished my master’s I decided to write science textbooks for homeschool kids. Writing was always something I could do and came easy for me but science was always a challenge and I felt like I’d be taking the easy road if I got a degree in writing, or English lit, or something like that. So I decided to be a scientist instead. I wrote my final master’s paper right about the same time I started writing these textbooks and even that was easy. I knocked out the whole thing in a long weekend. So that’s kinda how I got the idea to start writing non-fiction. And after a few years of writing these textbooks I ran out of science topics and got bored. Because I used to publish one new workbook every week for almost three years. I literally wrote hundreds of these things. It was a short leap into writing science fiction, which is the genre I first published before switching to romance. The new adult genre was just starting to take on a life of its own back in 2013 and I wrote a new adult romance called Tragic that took off and ended up being a thirteen-book series that includes several spinoffs and standalones. I mean, I hate to say that I kinda stumbled into this writing career because most of my author friends have always had this dream to be a writer, but that’s pretty much how it happened. I wanted to be an astronaut. 🙂

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

Wow. Best books. I like weird books because I only read science fiction and non-fiction in my spare time. But… The Great Gatsby is definitely in my top 5. As is The Good Earth. Those two books have stuck with me even though I read them way back in high school. Altered Carbon Series by Richard K Morgan is my absolute favorite science fiction series. And some recent favorites are The Red Trilogy by Linda Nagata, The Illunimae Series by Amie Koffman and Jay Kristoff, and the newly released Munmun by Jesse Andrews.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

Funny you should ask. My writing partner, Johnathan McClain, and I just started a romance podcast called Love Notes and my choice for first guest was K. Bromberg. 🙂 But if I didn’t have to stick to romance I’d choose Richard K Morgan. I think that would be a pretty dynamic interview because he seems pretty opinionated about the world and I’m pretty cynical. So… fireworks always make for a good time. Also, I think he’s a terrific writer. Like absolutely amazing. So it would very cool to hear about his process and pick his brain about things.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

The characters. I hope one day I have time to write something very literary where it’s just nothing but character development. Something no one would buy but might win me an award. 😉

What is a typical day like for you?

Oh, work, work, work. Pretty much. If I’m writing then I’m on a deadline because I put out a lot of books. So I typically get up around 4AM, knock out a few thousand words, and then spend some time feeding my animals and walking my dogs. I live on a ranch in Colorado, so there’s daily chores. After that I typically do some marketing and mess around on socials. Pretty much every day I have a phone conversation with my writing partner, Johnathan. And if we’re writing a book, we toss that thing back and forth each morning and evening so we chat a lot on the phone to get the next chapter/scene ready for the next day. Of course there are unusual days like this week and we record podcasts. And I always seem to have some kind of craft project going. Right now I’m making hand-made journals.

What scene in The Dirty Ones was your favorite to write?

My favorite scenes are the ones that take place in this giant mansion one of the main characters lives in. The whole book kind of has a Gatsby opulence to it and this mansion was the setting for that. So I enjoyed all the scenes that took place in the mansion.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Work hard. And probably… Keep going. No matter how many times you fail, just learn something new and try again.

Interview with L.J. Epps, author of Journey to Territory M

What can you tell us about your new release, Journey to Territory M?

Journey To Territory M is the next book in the series, Extinction Of All Children. Emma, the main character, and the last eighteen-year-old in the territory because all children born after her were killed, escapes from Territory L and manages to get into Territory M. Emma is on a mission to see if she can get the walls between the territories torn down, so they can all be one territory again. She believes all people should be equal and live together no matter if you are poor, rich or somewhere in the middle. Emma just recently found out that her six-month-old niece, Abigail may have also survived, and she wants to see if she can find her. She has a tough journey ahead and she learns certain truths along the way.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

For years I had different ideas for novels roaming around in my head, but I never thought I could write a novel. I would read a lot of romance novels by Nicholas Sparks. His novels would transform me to a different place or time, and sometimes make me cry, and feel the characters pain. The emotion I felt when reading his novels inspired me to finally write a novel. I was excited to get my ideas down on paper and tell a story. I love to write adult romance and young adult fantasy fiction.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

My first guest would be J.K. Rowling. I would like to talk to her about the Harry Potter series, and how she came up with the idea for the series. I am also curious as to what inspired her to become a writer. I would also like to ask her what kept her going after receiving so many rejection letters when she first started out.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

My favorite thing about writing is that it takes me to another world that’s not my own. It transforms me to another place. It’s like an escapism from real life, at least for a little while. It gives me a rush and makes me feel things like joy, sadness, frustration and excitement.

What is a typical day like for you?

First thing I do after I wake up is exercise. I feel like I can’t really get my day started until I’ve had my daily workout. Once that exciting chore is done, I move on to breakfast. Next thing I do is work on my novels. Working on my novels could mean different things such as outlining or writing new pages or reworking some pages my editor has given back to me. Once I’m satisfied and feel like I’ve gotten a big chunk of writing done I try to look at what other authors are saying or tweeting about online. I try to stay up to date with social media.

What scene in Journey to Territory M was your favorite to write?

My favorite scene to write was near the end of the book. Emma has to give another dreaded speech in front of the reporters and all three of the territories. Evil President Esther and her henchman, Rich have threatened Emma into saying certain things. I love how she handles the pressure and also writing her responses to the questions she is given.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Live every day to the fullest. Live every day like it’s your last. If you believe, you can achieve. A personal motto helps me in my day to day quest to be a writer/author.

Interview with Willow Rose, author of Her Final Word

What can you tell us about your new release, Her Final Word?

In this book Jack Ryder travels to the Bahamas with his adoptive daughter Emily to try and find her realthe family. But all they can find is a woman who’s in jail for murder of a young girl six months earlier. The girl was found floating in her own pool in one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the world. As Jack Ryder digs into the story, he finds secrets buried so deep no one thought they would ever see the light of day.

If Her Final Word is turned into a movie, who would you pick to play the main characters?

I always thought Matthew McConaughey would be a good fit to play my main character Jack Ryder.

Name a book that you feel has impacted your life significantly? Why was it so impactful?

The Never-ending Story has always been my favorite book. It’s just a really beautiful book. I remember reading it as a young girl and loving how it transported me into this strange and dying world. The thought that there could be a universe parallel to ours that was only surviving by human imagination, was so compelling. To think that just because people stopped reading books, there was an entire world of imagination that would die. I remember thinking it was the most awful thing. What if people forgot to use their imagination? I couldn’t think of anything worse.

How do you like to spend a rainy day?

Writing or reading. My two favorite things to do.

If you could invent anything, what would it be?

A machine that could give us more time. Or a teleportation device so I could visit my loved ones in Europe faster.

Do you listen to anything while you write? If so, what's your audio of choice??

I always listen to Florence and the Machine.

What scene in Her Final Word was your favorite to write?

The final one. I love it when the characters go through something and then grow stronger from it.
