Interview with Joseph E. Henning, Author of Adaptively Radiant
What can you tell us about your new release, Adaptively Radiant?
Adaptively Radiant is a fast paced, adventure packed supernatural tale of discovery and exploration that blends aspects of culture and mythology into a modern fairy-tale. The novel was inspired by city life versus island life experiences blended with my youthful passion for nature, folklore, and big adventure storytelling.
What or who inspired you to become an author?
One day in early 2018, I decided a 15-year career in mortgage lending and real estate had run its course. So, I grabbed a pen and blank journal, plopped a beach chair down in the sand, and began writing down my thoughts for a story. I told myself, “Fill this journal full of ideas and see what you can come up with.” One month later, the journal was full, the following month I organized the story into a writing program, and nine months after that the manuscript was complete. I guess you can say the inspiration came from within. I believe in myself.
What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?
Red Dragon by Thomas Harris ranks very high on my all-time list. The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit are masterpieces. My top reads this summer are The Silent Patient, Three Days Missing, and Sometimes I Lie.
Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?
M. Night Shyamalan. Even though his work is mostly screen plays vs novels, the storytelling is legendary. I would ask him, “What inspires you to keep creating supernatural thrillers after all of your success? Did you have a mentor in your early days?”
What's your favorite thing about writing?
The freedom of speech. Cliché? Probably, but it’s the truth. To creatively write and share literature with the world is priceless.
What is a typical day like for you?
After a warm shower and a cup of coffee or tea, I nestle into research and writing for approximately 5-6 hours. Weekends are left open to beach activities and reading.
What scene in Adaptively Radiant was your favorite to write?
The story has nine separate magical encounters and each one of these were very special for me to write. They include specific, hand selected mystical beings and entities from traditional Japanese, Hawaiian, and Native American folklore. But if you want to know my favorite, it would have to be Chapter 11 - Kalalau Beach.
Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?
I wrote Adaptively Radiant with one motto in mind. “Write something meaningful”

Interview with Christopher Coleman, Author of The Crippling
What can you tell us about your new release, The Crippling?
The Crippling is the fifth book in the Gretel series, which is loosely based on the Brothers Grimm’s Hansel and Gretel. I don't want to say too much for fear of giving away spoilers but I will say that The Crippling is creepier and darker than the previous books in the series and introduces two new villains which are more terrifying than their predecessors.
What or who inspired you to become an author?
My grandfather used to tell my brother and me creepy stories when we were little, and he was also an avid reader of novels, so I’d say he was the person who got me into a love of books as a kid. And then I discovered Stephen King when I was probably ten or eleven, and my world changed.
What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?
I guess I’d have to classify the top five somehow, especially if we included nonfiction, and it would take me a week to really sort it out, but I’ll give five novels that would be near the top:
1. The Grapes of Wrath
2. The Road
3. Never Let Me Go
4. Underworld
5. It
Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?
It would be Cormac McCarthy. He’s 85 and hasn’t released a novel since The Road in 2006. I’ve heard he’s coming out with a new book for like ten years now, so my question would be, ‘What’s taking so long??’ I just don’t want him to pass before giving us one more treasure.
What's your favorite thing about writing?
Writing is a struggle for me because, though I enjoy the solitude and independence of the process, I’m easily distracted, so it requires a lot of will power for me to stay in the chair. I don’t like that part. But I love the times when the creativity comes and the words flow effortlessly. It doesn’t happen all the time—most of the time it’s work—but when it does, it’s awesome.
What is a typical day like for you?
As I said, if I have an excuse, I’ll avoid the chair, so I need to have my day mapped out by the half-hour. I usually start early, write in increments of about 90 minutes depending on deadlines, other obligations, etc., and then take a break. My goal is to get at least four hours of writing in each day.
What scene in The Crippling was your favorite to write?
I have a character named Anika who is the co-heroine of the novel, and she’s pretty badass. She has a couple of fight scenes that result in her ending people pretty violently. I liked writing those. LOL!
Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?
When it comes to writing, it’s this: What makes a good book is not what it’s about, it’s how it’s about what it’s about.
I try to keep that point in mind with every scene I write.

Interview with Jane Hinchey, Author of Witch Way to Beauty and the Beach
What can you tell us about your new release, Witch Way to Beauty and the Beach?
Witch Way to Beauty and the Beach is the fourth installment in the Witch Way series that features an amateur sleuth, Harper, who is also a witch, her Gran who makes questionable fashion choices (amongst other things) and her orange tabby familiar, Archie. In this book, one of the entrants in the local magic talent competition mysteriously turns up dead. Harper and her sidekicks have their work cut out for them discovering who the killer is before they strike again.
What or who inspired you to become an author?
It wasn’t any one person or thing. From the ages of about two to eight, we lived in rural/remote outback South Australia and didn’t have a television (gasp, I know, how primitive!) so I grew up having to entertain myself, having to use my imagination. Subsequently both my brother and I are avid readers. Side-note: for anyone who wants to write, being a reader is a must. And that desire to tell my own story has always been there, in the back of my mind, but it really didn’t see the light of day until four years ago when I was made redundant and I was wondering what to do with myself…I decided to write a book!
What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?
Urgh, too hard! Next question, lol. My favorite genres to read are cozy mysteries, paranormal romance, and urban fantasy. I’m often reading two books at once — much like my writing I tend to bounce between a couple of projects at a time. For cozies, I’ve really been enjoying the High Heels Mysteries by Gemma Halliday and the Moonstone Bay series by Amanda M. Lee.
Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?
Assuming it could be anyone past or present I’d definitely start with Agatha Christie! I’d want to know what her failures were, what mistakes she made in her career and writing. I think she would be absolutely fascinating to sit down and have a cuppa with.
What's your favorite thing about writing?
Making stuff up. Creating my own world. My own characters. It’s exciting breathing life into my creations and then just seeing where they take me. Quite often I’ll have a plan in mind and then I’ll start writing and something else totally unexpected appears on the page. I love it when that happens!
What is a typical day like for you?
My days typical start with coffee and cats. One of my cats, Morgan, loves to hang out with me in my office, it’s her favorite place, so she’ll nag me to get up just so she can come in here and take a four-hour nap.
Then it’s checking emails and social media while I drink my coffee, check in on my reader group, more coffee, then it’s sleeves up and fingers on the keyboard to get my daily words in. I aim for around 3,000 words a day. Some days are more, some are less. Then it’s more admin, the business side like budgets and accounts and all that fun stuff.
That’s my standard day – in the evenings I’m usually on my laptop in front of the TV doing research or a bit of marketing and I wind down before bedtime either reading or watching something on Netflix.
What scene in Witch Way to Beauty and the Beach was your favorite to write?
There’s an opening scene where Gran is working with the kids on their magical talent quest entry and they’re all suspended in the air and gran farts, which propels her unexpectedly across the room. I admit to getting a fit of giggles while writing that! Pretty much any scene with Gran is fun to write.
Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?
Start now, with what you have.
Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.
I remind myself of this often. Every book starts with a blank page, doesn’t matter who you are, we all start the same. It doesn’t matter what tools you use to put words on the page. You don’t need fancy software; you can write a book using pen and paper! It’s all about starting with what you have and upgrading later. This doesn’t just apply to writing, it applies to everything in life. Start now, with what you have.
