Interview with Lauren Blakely, author of The Feel Good Factor

What can you tell us about your new release, The Feel Good Factor?

If you like inked bad boys with hearts of gold, instant chemistry and strong heroines, this book is for you! Readers have been telling me how much they love these characters because they feel so real. Derek is a paramedic, and his heroine, Perri, is a cop. I love that readers feel they're relatable!

If The Feel Good Factor is turned into a movie, who would you pick to play the main characters?

Emma Stone would be fantastic as snarky Perri, and an inked Penn Badgley would be a great Derek.

What TV show have you binge watched recently?

I just finished and loved I'm Sorry from TruTV and I'm sorry it hasn't been renewed! Sooo funny!

What books are currently on your night stand?

I recently began V. Schwab's Vicious. It's not a romance at all - it's adult magical realism and it's stark and intriguing so far!

What scene in The Feel Good Factor was your favorite to write?

The waffle truck scene was a blast!

Interview with Jiffy Kate, author of The Rookie and the Rockstar

What can you tell us about your new release, The Rookie and the Rockstar?

The Rookie and The Rockstar is our first sports romance. We love baseball and have always wanted to write a story based around the sport. Charlotte “Lola” Carradine is all too familiar with the paparazzi, but nothing can prepare her for what life will be like dating one of MLB's hottest rookies. Making it to the Big Leagues has been Bo Bennett’s lifelong dream. When he finally gets his break with the New Orleans Revelers, the last thing he needs is a distraction, but Charlotte isn’t just rocking the stage, she’s rocking his world.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

So many people and circumstances played a part in our journey to publishing. We both have always loved the written word, dabbling in writing blogs and keeping journals over the years. When we met in the Twilight fandom, about seven years ago, we decided to try our hand at writing fanfiction, assuming we'd write one story and get it out of our system. That was the biggest lie we've ever told ourselves. LOL. Over the course of a few years, we wrote more than twenty stories. We developed our voice and wrote about the characters we loved. We also watched people come from the world of fanfiction and have great success, so we eventually decided to take the leap in 2015 and we published our first book, Finding Focus. The rest is history. If we had to narrow it down to one person who really made a difference in our lives and inspired us, we'd have to say, Stefenie Meyer. Because of her dream, we're now chasing ours.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

Collectively, we'd have to go with Twilight, Breaking Dawn, Maybe Someday, Ugly Love, and Beard Science

Say you’re the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

Everyone knows that giving Jiffy Kate the mic is very dangerous. But if we ever get the chance, we'd love to interview Stephenie Meyer and grill her about Midnight Sun. Ha! Actually, she might hate us if we did that and we'd want her to love us, so we'd probably just ask her if she's had any new dreams and what book she's working on next.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

The characters. We love coming up with colorful, soulful people to write about.

What is a typical day like for you?

We both work. (Jiff is in the classroom all day and Jenny Kate is an accounting assistant.) But we also try to squeeze in some writing whenever and wherever we can, mostly in the evenings and weekends.

What scene in The Rookie and the Rockstar was your favorite to write?

Without giving too much away, we'll just say that we love one of the opening scenes where Bo and Charlotte go to a crepe truck for a late night snack. Their conversation is easy and they don't even know each other yet. It's a great glimpse into what's to come for the two of them and sets the tone for their relationship.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Well behaved women rarely make history.

Interview with Hannah De Giorgis, author of Threads in Time

What can you tell us about your new release, Threads in Time?

Threads in Time is a dystopian sci-fi novel. At the heart of the action is twenty-two-year-old Lyndall Huxley, who wakes to find herself thousands of years in the future. It appears that something went wrong with the program she volunteered for, which used Einstein’s rules of relativity to send travellers forward in time. The ruins overrun by greenery couldn’t be further from the urbanized twenty-third century of Lyndall’s birth. She embarks upon a life-changing journey, but Lyndall cannot escape the tragic past that drove her to volunteer in the first place, nor the vital part she will have to play in the mission ahead – which, as it turns out, was never about traveling to the future alone. Far more hangs in the balance.

It is a fast-paced adventure story that offers a compelling depiction of two future worlds: the future London Lyndall comes from, which is over-populated, over-urbanized and yet globalization has regressed following the “Resource Depletion Crisis”; and the far-off future, where she wakes in what initially appears to be Earth circa 5000 AD. Here, it seems that instead of man having eclipsed nature, like in the twenty-third century, nature has eclipsed man. Yet it isn’t always clear which of these two contrasting futures is the dystopia. Perhaps for some readers, the far-off future with its future species of humans but apparent lack of technology is far more utopic than the urbanized “civilized” time of Lyndall’s birth…

It is a YA novel but with mature themes that make it perfect for adult crossover. If readers enjoy adventure sci-fi novels with a dash of romance and an intriguing twist, this is for them!

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I began to write stories from a very young age. I’ve always loved reading and getting lost in literature. I was enthralled when other writers could capture thoughts and feelings that seemed particular to me, but better than I ever could. There are so many writers that have inspired me – almost too many to mention. As a teenager, especially, I sought escape in books, so I suppose what really drove me to become an author was the desire to provide that sort of escape for others.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

It’s a bit of a random combination but they would have to be: Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell; The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkein; Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf; T.S. Eliot’s Four Quartets; and, the childhood favorites (not one book, but a series!), J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books.

Say you’re the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

On the assumption that I can choose any past writer, living or dead, I would invite T.S. Eliot, as he’s my all-time favorite poet and I wrote my dissertation on him. I would ask what was behind many of my favorite lines – and, following the relativity theme, I would ask if his depiction of time was influenced by the theories of relativity!

What's your favorite thing about writing?

There are so many wonderful elements to writing; it is both cathartic and creative. My favorite thing, though, would have to be the idea that the world we can potentially create is limitless – its only limit being that of the writer’s own imagination. For me, inhabiting a world that you’ve created (and made compelling enough to draw others in) is the purest form of escapism.

What is a typical day like for you?

I wake early every morning to give myself time to write before going to my day job. I live and work in central London so it’s quite a hectic lifestyle. I love exploring the city when I can, walking as much as possible to allow time to think, and discovering new sites I’ve never been to. I spend every moment I can spare writing my blog, poetry, short stories, and of course the Threads in Time sequel!

What scene in Threads in Time was your favorite to write?

My favorite scene to write was when Lyndall stumbles across the city of Florence, reduced in the thousands of years that have passed to haunting ruins overrun by greenery, and she realizes where she is in this future world, and how far the human species have fallen. For this scene, the two main inspirations were the poem “Ozymandias” by Percy Shelley (which is the novel’s epigraph) and the infamous moment at the end of Planet of the Apes when Colonel Taylor sees the half-sunken Statue of Liberty and realises what has become of humanity. It was wonderful to try and put into words a moment that was both vivid and poignant in my imagination.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

I try to live mindfully. It’s so easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle of the everyday – especially given the fast-paced nature of our current time, not to mention living in a busy capital like London! – so I think it’s important not to lose oneself in it. I keep myself sane by meditating and writing at every possible opportunity. I think the ability to sit quietly back and watch the world go by is increasingly overlooked and underrated.

Interview with Lucia Ashta, author of Magical Creatures Academy 1: Night Shifter

What can you tell us about your new release, Magical Creatures Academy 1?

Night Shifter is the first in my new Magical Creatures Academy, but it joins an already rich world and history. Most of my series intertwine, and Night Shifter visits some familiar, favorite characters, while also introducing an entire new setting with its own mischievous and dangerous creatures.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

Reading! I’ve been a voracious reader since … forever. There are few things I enjoy more than losing myself to an imaginary world. Being able to create these worlds for others is a great privilege.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

I read a great variety of genres. I simply have too many favorites to narrow them down to five.

Say you’re the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

Hmm, this is a tricky question. I think I’d start by inviting Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and asking him where he drew his inspiration for The Little Prince.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

Bringing to life entire worlds and people that I can then share with others.

What is a typical day like for you?

I wake up, spend time with my children, send them off to school, then write a chapter. To refuel, I go for a hike around the nearby mountain. Re-energized after quiet time in nature, I write some more. After that, I spend time moving forward other book projects, and then it’s family time.

What scene in Magical Creatures Academy 1 was your favorite to write?

Any scene with the pygmy trolls. I loved describing their antics.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

“Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you're right.” -Henry Ford.

Interview with Normandie Alleman, author of Royal Wrecker

What can you tell us about your new release, Royal Wrecker?

Royal Wrecker is the fourth book in my series about a famous reality TV show family. Each book tells the love story of one of the family members. They are stand alone novels that don’t need to be read in order. Royal Wrecker is about the rock star brother. After one of his concerts he hooks up with a young woman he thinks is a groupie, but it turns out she’s a princess in disguise. The whole thing blows up, and to avoid an international incident they are forced to get married.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

The idea stage is my favorite part. I’m really a big picture person, so I enjoy the creation part the most. Then I love getting the words onto the page. The details like fixing commas at the end—not so much.

What scene in Royal Wrecker was your favorite to write?

Definitely the steamy scene that takes place in Iceland where Leo and Honore are on their honeymoon. He shares a life-altering secret with her under the Northern Lights. It takes place in this bubble hotel that is based on a real world transparent tent where you can comfortably stay out in the middle of the snowy woods and watch nature’s light show in the sky above.

What is a typical day like for you?

I take my kids to school, then sometimes I go for a walk and listen to a book or podcast for about an hour. When I get home, I eat breakfast and do administrative stuff on the computer. I usually watch TV in the background while I do that.

After lunch I get to work writing new words or editing, depending on the project. Then late afternoon is when I proof audiobooks or go over projects with co-authors.

My kids take the bus home, and I spend some time with them once they get home. After I feed everyone dinner, I either get back to writing words if I’m on a deadline, or if not, I work on marketing tasks.

My husband travels a lot so when he’s home, I frequently drop all non-essential work to do things with him. Our “weekends” happen at random times based on his work schedule, and since mine is flexible, we do things like take a trip to New Orleans in the middle of the week. I love that my writing life gives me the flexibility to do that.
