Interview with Sue Lilley, Author of Whispered Wishes

What can you tell us about your new release, Whispered Wishes?

It’s a tale of bad choices and second chances. The two male characters, Nathan and Lucas, already have history. Then Olivia gets caught between them and life explodes in their faces. When Nathan’s daughter goes missing, Lucas is to blame. if they have any hope of finding her, they’ll need to bury their toxic past and work together.

Writing Whispered Wishes was a real labor of love, as I had to write it in snatched half-hours. My two-year old granddaughter lived with me for eighteen months. At the same time, my husband had surgery which put him in a wheelchair for six months. It took forever! But of all my novels, it’s my favorite. I’m very proud of it.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I was a child who always had my nose buried in a book. When I won a story competition at school, my late mother cried with pride. I still have that hand-written exercise book in an old box of treasures. I had various short romances published in magazines. But I always needed to know what happened next to my characters. I lost my mother when I was seventeen. But she’d be thrilled I’m now a published author.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

My all-time favourite is The Shell Seekers by Rosamunde Pilcher. I read it so many times, it fell to bits and I had to buy another copy. I adore everything about it - the wonderful characters, the sense of family history, the vivid setting. I suspect her writing inspired my lasting love of Cornwall, which features in my own novels.

Stepping by Nancy Thayer. I was newly married when I read this the first time. I never had step-children but the story haunted me. I still have the battered paperback and return to it from time to time, like a favourite movie.

Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell. This was my first “grown-up” book and again I’ve read it many times. Who wouldn’t love to create a heroine like Scarlett O’Hara?

Scruples by Judith Kranz. The first big “sex and shopping” novel of the eighties. They even made a TV mini-series back in the day. I fell in love with Spider Elliott.

Nora Roberts – anything! I’m working my way through her back catalogue on kindle. I can never put them down, so I have to ration myself or I’d get nothing else done. Her male characters are something else!

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

I’m a total Sandra Howard fangirl. Her life is so intriguing. She was born in Malta during WW2. She was a famous model in the sixties and met everyone including Frank Sinatra. She’s married to a senior politician and is now a best-selling novelist, drawing heavily on all that life experience.

I’d want to ask her if there’s anything in her fascinating life which wasn’t so wonderful. And also how she managed to sit down long enough to produce such amazing novels.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

I write what I love because if I don’t love it, who else will? I do like a happy ending and I enjoy fitting all the pieces of the puzzle together without it seeming contrived. Writing is my therapy and not as expensive as buying shoes.

What is a typical day like for you?

When my husband was ill, I took a redundancy package from my job. I’m now “working from home,” convincing myself writing is a business.

In the mornings, mindless physical activity helps me mull over where I’m up to in my current plot. I like fair-weather gardening – the pretty design kind, not growing useful things to eat.

I write in the afternoons and spend the evenings with my lovely husband who’s a talented artist.

What scene in Whispered Wishes was your favorite to write?

The scene on the train, where Olivia meets Lucas again. It was inspired by a real life encounter. He was a total surf-dude and she was a young executive lawyer type. They started off bickering but after three hours on the train, they were all over each other, clearly heading for a hotel. I was intrigued and desperate to follow them. But I reined in my stalker tendencies and wrote it down instead.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

“Well done is better than well said” (Benjamin Franklin)

Interview with Lindsay Buroker, author of Sinister Magic

What can you tell us about your new release, Sinister Magic?

It’s the first book in a new urban fantasy series set in Seattle, and the heroine is an assassin of magical bad guys. She also happens to be working through a few personal issues. She’s the mother of a teenager, a divorcee, and she’s seeing a therapist when she’s not busy battling wyverns, dark elves, and vampires. And did I mention the dragon? He’s there, and he’s trouble.

Which books would we be surprised to find on your shelves?

I have quirky nonfiction books about the “frozen water trade” and the history of salt. There’s also a box of LEGOs waiting to be made into a robot.

If you woke up in the world of Sinister Magic, what is the first thing you would do?

Get a latte, because it takes place in modern times. And then I’d be puzzled by the dragon flying past the espresso stand.

What's on your writing desk?

A special “daylight" lamp that lets me pretend the sun is shining in my office even in the winter. Also chocolate, things I don’t want the dog to be able to reach and chew, and a headset for my weekly podcast.

BAM. You're a superhero. What's your superpower?

Incinerating things with my mind! Especially tape on cardboard boxes. Maybe just the entire box. Thing how much less frustrating opening packages would be!

What scene in Sinister Magic was your favorite to write?

I’m a sucker for writing banter. I enjoyed all of the scenes with our half-elven protagonist Val interacting with the powerful dragon shifter who’s butted into her life… and calls her a mongrel and a criminal. What’s the opposite of love at first sight? They have that.

Interview with Jo Fenton, Author of Revelation

What can you tell us about your new release, Revelation?

It’s set in early 1989 in Manchester, and follows 2 students, Becky and Dan, in the aftermath of the suspicious death of their friend, Rick.

Revelation is a story of unrequited love, grief, friendship, prejudice, revenge and the challenges of being a student in the late 80’s.

It’s a crime thriller, so there is plenty of intrigue, suspense and suspicion.

This is the start of a series, and Revelation is a prequel – with the next in the series starting 30 years later in the present day.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

My husband always said I should write a book, but it was a combination of events that got me started. Early in 2011, I did a touch typing course, which allowed me to get my ideas down on paper in a manageable format, and I started by writing a few short stories.

Then in October of that year, I heard about NaNoWriMo – National Novel Writing Month. My husband suggested I should give it a go, and I sat down to think about what I could write about. The concept of my first novel, The Brotherhood, popped into my head within about 5 minutes, and 6 years later (almost to the day) I finished writing the last draft, and starting submitting it to agents and publishers.

I was lucky enough to be taken on by Crooked Cat in December 2017. They have published The Brotherhood, its sequel The Refuge, and are now, under the Darkstroke imprint, publishing Revelation.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

Gaudy Night – Dorothy L Sayers (beautifully written, character driven, and tightly plotted. Inspirational.)

On The Night of The Seventh Moon – Victoria Holt (love the dark gothic intrigue, and the romantic but terrifying setting.)

Jane Eyre – Charlotte Bronte (another brilliantly written novel, with fascinating characters and a disturbing dark side.)

The Harry Potter series – JK Rowling (the whole series is so well constructed. Attention to detail is perfect, and the plotting is immaculate. Brilliant world building and character development.)

His Dark Materials series – Philip Pullman (I only read this recently, but was struck with another example of fantastic world building, plotting and character development. I also loved how the author explores current issues through his fantasy world.)

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

JK Rowling – one of my questions, that has been burning a hole in my brain for a long time, is whether the cat, Mrs Norris, was based on the character from Mansfield Park. I’m sure I could find some other questions to ask too.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

I love escaping into a world of my own creation, and having the power to dictate what happens in that world. Although sometimes my characters tell me what’s going to happen, and that’s pretty exciting too.

What is a typical day like for you?

I have a full time job in Clinical Research as a manager, so I have to fit my writing in around that. I try to write for 15-30 minutes a day before work, as my brain is often frazzled by the end of the day. During the evenings, I usually manage to fit in some time for social media and marketing activities, but my favourite writing time is at weekends, when my husband and kids are at football, and I get a couple of hours to sit and immerse myself in my latest work in progress.

What scene in Revelation was your favorite to write?

There’s a scene about half way through, when Dan is struggling with his grief so badly, that he finds himself on a bridge over a railway. I loved writing that scene, because it allowed me to delve into the emotions that led him there and his subsequent terror.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

I have a set of rules that I try to live by:

'Challenge yourself to be as amazing as possible.

Be kind to others. Most people will be kind back. The others aren’t worth worrying about.

Move out of your comfort zone whenever possible. Your comfort zone will become huge.'

Jo Fenton is the author of the new book Revelation.
