Interview with Indigo, Author of Dancing with Chaos

What can you tell us about your new release, Dancing with Chaos?

Dancing with Chaos is a memoir. There is so much I wanted to write about! How wonderful and fulfilling the profession of nursing is, how nature can sustain us, how travel can show us what an amazing place the world is. My story starts as a young child living in poverty in New York City and takes you on a lifetime of adventure culminating in the hills of Northern California. All these diverse experiences I was happily able to share in my book. Also, a major, repeating theme in the book is mental illness. Because there was so much mental illness in my family, I wanted to share some insights into the heartache and trials that individuals with severe mental illness and their families experience. To show how behind that snapshot of a dysfunctional individual is a story of a life come apart, a person who is suffering. I hope that people will find my book entertaining but I am also hoping to break down some of the stigma of mental illness by encouraging open discussion.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

Years ago when was I was in Nursing School I took an English class. We had an assignment to write something about our childhood. My teacher liked my essay so much that she wanted to show it to her friend who ran a magazine thinking she would probably publish it. I actually turned her down thinking “no, I’m going to write a book”. It has taken half a life time to do so.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

1. “My Journey to Lhasa” by Alexandra David Neel
2. “Endurance, Shackleton’s Incredible Voyage” by Alfred Lansing
3. “Seven Years in Tibet” by Heinrich Harrer
4. “The snow Leopard” by Peter Matthiessen
5. Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

Since I love true adventure/nature/travel stories I would want to interview Peter Matthiessen. I would want him to tell us all about his adventures.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

I feel like when I write I have time to think about what I want to say and so I am able to express myself more clearly and in a more positive light.

What is a typical day like for you?

Well on the days that I work at the clinic I get up, shower, have some breakfast, drive to the clinic and for the next 10 or 11 hours I think about nothing outside of my work duties, seeing patients, charting, ordering testes etc.
On days that I am home I like to do my writing and other computer work in the morning when I have my best energy. The rest of the day varies, household chores, taking my adult son who suffers from schizophrenia to his monthly medical appointments, working in the garden. By evening I’m usually winding down. I go to bed early.

What scene in Dancing with Chaos was your favorite to write?

So many! Can I give you 3?

1. When I was around 8 years old and my mother and I were homeless in N.Y.C. in the winter when it was snowing. We spent a night on a welfare bench locked in the foyer with a couple of other homeless people so that we would not freeze to death over night. We spent part of the next night on the subway steps sitting out in the snow. Why did I like writing this? Because it was such an intense time for me and because it is a time so very different from my reality as an adult.

2. The time that I was helping to deliver a baby on Christmas night in the emergency room, because it is so representative of the experiences that I loved about being a nurse.

3. The time hiking in the desert. “There’s a thing about the night sky in the desert. It’s like magic. The sky becomes much larger than the earth and not so very far away. It looks like if you walk far enough, you will touch it and just tumble off into the stars”

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Yes “All’s well that ends well”. If you’re doing OK don’t waste a lot of energy worrying about the past!

Interview with Charlie Suisman, Author of Arnold Falls

What can you tell us about your new release, Arnold Falls?

Arnold Falls is a fictional small town in upstate New York that, in its long and not-very-glorious history, has attracted all kinds of oddball characters into its fold. Nothing ever goes quite right in Arnold Falls. There are frequent hailstorms, even when it's sunny out, the local moonshine is popular (though periodically lethal), and there's a lot of nostalgia for the town's heyday when it was full of bordellos. The novel takes us to a recent autumn, in which the town may elect its first woman mayor, there's a threat of a polluting factory being built, and a beloved turkey named Chaplin is at risk of Thanksgiving. There's love in the air, too. I hope the book is funny and that readers grow fond of the characters.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

Books have always been an essential part of my life. Writing a novel seemed unimaginable until some of the characters in the book began insinuating themselves into my thoughts. After a while they began making me laugh, so I took notes.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

Tough question because I can answer that in so many different ways with completely different books. But I'll go with The Book of Ebenezer Le Page by G. B. Edwards, Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell, The Code of the Woosters by P. G. Wodehouse, The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro, and Slouching Towards Bethlehem by Joan Didion.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

Is this living or dead? If so, Shakespeare, of course. If current, Anne Tyler. I'd want to ask Anne Tyler whether she thinks people will still be reading novels in a hundred years. I'd like to ask Shakespeare a lot of really personal questions.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

When I realize there's a connection between two characters that I didn't understand before.

What is a typical day like for you?

I write in the very early morning, walk my dog, do my day job of publishing Manhattan User's Guide, reread what I wrote earlier, toss it out, and try again.

What scene in Arnold Falls was your favorite to write?

There's a scene where Aunt Doozy, the 93-year-old daughter of a bordello madam, is having lunch in New York City at the Oyster Bar with one of her closest friends. Doozy tells her pal something she's never told anyone. This scene almost wrote itself -- I could hear the dialogue so clearly.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Not a specific motto, but I find a little kindness goes a long way.

Interview with M.S. Kaminsky, Author of Merman Rising

What can you tell us about your new release, Merman Rising?

Merman Rising is a standalone YA urban fantasy adventure novel in the Mermaid Curse series. It tells the story of Delphin a young merman who learns to follow his authoritarian father’s strict rules. That all changes when Delphin falls in love with a human boy.

Will Delphin muster the courage to reject every rule his father wrote, fight for truth, and rise to defeat the evil that threatens to destroy him and his pod? If you enjoy romantic fantasy novels with mermaids, gay mermen, shifters and plenty of suspense, I think you’ll want to find out!

Delphin first appeared in The Atlantis Song and again in The Atlantis Queens. I wrote Merman Rising after receiving multiple emails from readers who wanted to know more about Delphin. I love to write young adult fiction with diverse voices and couldn’t wait to tell the coming-of-age story of a young, gay merman.

Because the series concluded with The Atlantis Queens it gave me the freedom to return and explore the world of mermaids and mermen in greater depth (pun intended). The events in Merman Rising take place before all the wild adventures that Allie and her friends have in the Mermaid Curse series. Because of that, readers can enjoy it on its own or as part of the complete series.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

The urge to tell stories struck when I was four before I could handwrite. My dad became a big encouragement when he helped scribe my tales while I narrated and drew the pictures. I remember being attracted to the fantasy and paranormal genre from the start. My stories often involved ghosts, monsters, fairies and dragons. I don’t remember writing mermen or mermaid stories back then, but I might have. Unfortunately, a house fire claimed what were possibly my most inspired works ever!

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

Oh, that is tough! There are so many books I’ve loved. Almost all fall under the fantasy and sci-fi banner. You’ll notice that I am cheating a bit since most of these books are fantasy series that encompass multiple books. You wouldn’t expect me to choose between A Wizard of Earthsea and The Farthest Shore would you? Here are a few that come to mind in no particular order:

A Song of Ice and Fire, by George R.R. Martin

The Chronicles of Narnia, by C.S. Lewis,

The Name of the Wind, by Patrick Rothfuss

The Earth Sea Cycle Series, Ursula K. Leguin

The Belgariad, David Eddings

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

My first guest would be Neil Gaiman. From the London Below in Neverwhere to Coraline’s “Other Mother and Father” Gaiman shows a massive talent for creating powerful characters who navigate uncanny fantasy realms. I’d love to hear more about his world-building process when he writes fantasy fiction.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

On days when I tap into a good writing flow, it’s a similar pleasure to reading a fantasy novel. I find myself transported to an alternate reality—a world of imagination that is bigger, brighter and bolder than everyday life.

What is a typical day like for you?

Typical went out the window when Covid-19 arrived! Besides being an author I also work as a filmmaker and freelance video editor so my schedule is variable. My ideal day is to get up early and do mediation and qigong for an hour. I’ve done this for years and have only missed one or two days throughout. Afterward I eat breakfast, grab some tea and get down to writing. I do my best work in the morning. I try to avoid looking at the news or social media (tough lately) until I’ve done my word count. In the afternoon I edit, work on book marketing (not my strong point–that’s why I turned to Written Word Media for their expertise!) In the evenings I exercise, treat myself to a Netflix show with my husband or catch-up on work I missed during the day.

What scene in Merman Rising was your favorite to write?

It’s difficult to talk about my favorite scene without dropping spoilers. Half of the novel takes place beneath the sea with Delphin’s fellow mermaids and mermen. The other half takes place in the human world (although still on the sea). I enjoyed writing the scenes that transition between the human and mer-worlds. I also loved exploring the romance between Delphin and Elias which forms the heart of the story.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

The world of reality has its limits; the world of imagination is boundless. – Jean Jacques Rousseau.

Escaping Our New Reality by Monica Murphy

By Monica Murphy

Well, our lives are certainly turned upside down right now, aren’t they? It’s unprecedented and disconcerting, and while like everyone else I can get caught up in the bad news and the dire predictions, I am also looking for an escape. And I’ve been looking for it in a variety of places.

One is going outside (though currently as I write this, it’s raining, boo). My daughter and I have been taking walks every single day. It gets the heart pumping and the muscles moving, and my daughter and I are having great conversations. Sometimes we’re silly, sometimes we’re serious, and sometimes, one (or all) of our cats follow us, which we find amusing.

I’m thinking at this moment though, we’re pretty easily amused.

I’m also doing yard work. My roses are getting ready to bloom, and I’m so excited. I’ve basically turned into my great-grandma, and I don’t mind. She was a card carrying board member of her local Rose Garden Club. Do they still have those? I used to go to the meetings with her when I was a little girl. Now look at me, tending my roses. My great-grandma would be thrilled.

We watched Tiger King (of course we did, along with the rest of the country). The memes from this series have been pure gold. Actually, the Coronavirus memes have been pretty funny, and while there’s a lot of sadness and seriousness going on with this horrible virus, I have to say dealing with it by laughing at silly memes does make me feel better.

My favorite way of escaping though, is by reading. When it all first went down and the schools were closed and my state (California) was told to shelter in place, it was difficult to lose myself in a book. I couldn’t concentrate. I was stressed. Worried. But as we’ve adjusted to our new normal, I find myself reading more. And more.

And more.

It’s such a great escape, and reasonably priced too. In the romance novels I’ve recently devoured, I read about people going to restaurants and sporting events and it fills me with a nostalgic feeling. I can’t wait to go back to the land of the living again. Where I can go to a restaurant with my family or friends and just enjoy myself. When I can wander around Target without searching for (and never finding) toilet paper. I am ready for those moments!

But in the meanwhile, I’m reading. Hopefully, you’re able to read too. And maybe, you’ll like to read my newest book Hate to Date You. It’s funny and sweet and very sexy. There’s the best friend’s hot brother, a supportive group of friends, and a feisty Italian grandma. I had a blast writing this book, and if you give it a chance, I’m hoping you have a blast reading it.
