Interview with T.C. Edge, Author of The Song of the First Blade
What can you tell us about your new release, The Song of the First Blade?
The Song of the First Blade is an epic fantasy in the true sense of the word. It's long, in the spirit of the likes of George R R Martin and Brandon Sanderson, and spans a huge world of warring kingdoms and cultures, each driven by their devotion to the 'Fallen Gods' they once served.
What or who inspired you to become an author?
A love for Lord of the Rings, and the Silmarillion began it all when I was a youngster. Since then, other fantasy authors such as Sanderson and Martin have furthered that itch to build a great fantasy world of my own. I started writing sci-fi dystopian books, but after several years of that, decided it was time to dip my toe in the epic fantasy waters.
What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?
The Silmarillion by Tolkien, East of Eden by John Steinbeck, The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller, The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, A Storm of Swords by George R R Martin.
Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?
George R R Martin. I'd want to ask him when Winds of Winter (Song of Ice and Fire, Book 6) is finally going to come out! And if I can ask a second - how does he manage so many plotlines and characters, without driving himself mad!
What's your favorite thing about writing?
The escapism and discovery of it. Spending your days in a world of your own creation is a wonderful escape from some of the tough realities we face. And at the same time, discovering that world through the eyes of your characters is equally fulfilling.
What is a typical day like for you?
I tend to get up around 8. Head to the gym most days, come back, shower, coffee (lots of it), breakfast, and then read over/edit what I've written the previous day. Sometimes I might spend most of the morning/early afternoon on this, deleting or altering scenes. Sometimes I'm completely satisfied and happy to move on. Then it's onto the new stuff. I try to write 5,000 words a day, but this fluctuates massively. In the past, I've written up to 7-8k words a day consistently when writing sci fi, but with this book, I had to take it slower to fully flesh out the world, so 3-4k a day was more common. Typically there will be some ad work in there too, and other marketing. Alas, being an independent writer involves much more than just the writing part!
What scene from The Song of the First Blade was your favorite to write?
Difficult question - there were so many! I did rather enjoy writing a couple of early(ish) scenes when one of the main characters, Saska, is introduced to a man named Ranulf Shackton. He's an explorer and adventurer (I took the name from two people I admire - Sir Ranulph Fiennes, and Sir Ernest Shackleton, changing the names a bit) and opens Saska's eyes to many of the wonders of the world, at a time when she's all-but lost hope.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
If a story is in you, it has to come out - William Faulkner

Interview with Eva Winners, Author of Devotion
What can you tell us about your new release, Devotion?
Devotion is a second chance romance novel. It deals with some hard topics in life. Eve Bailey attempted suicide after losing her husband and son but things aren’t as they seem. Lachlan enters her life and with his patience brings her back to life.
What books are currently on your nightstand?
Good Night Moon and The Daughters of Ireland.
What advice would you give your teenage self?
Party more. Enjoy more. We are young only once. There is plenty of time to worry.
If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?
Writing.
What makes your world go round? Why does it bring you joy?
Traveling, reading, writing, and beach.
What scene from Devotion was your favorite to write?
The scene when Eve goes to Lachlan at his apartment to find him exiting with Layla is one of my favorite ones. It shows how far Eve has come in her healing. She loves him and puts it all out there for him and doesn’t revert back when he doesn’t react the way you’d hope. It shows how strong she has become.

Interview with James Rosone, Author of Into the Stars
What can you tell us about your new release, Into the Stars?
Into the Stars is an incredible story of humanity's race into the stars. It takes place in the 2090s, so not too far off in the distance. At this point in the story arc, humanity has settled colonies on the Moon, Mars, and small colonies in the Belt. Think of the TV show The Expanse. Where things really begin to change, is when the humans finally develop faster than light travel and are now able to expand and explore beyond our own star system. I wrote this book and series because I wanted to explore and look at what that adventure might be like. The competing interests on where to explore first and how the different governments of earth would have to work together is what we wanted to show. I'm a thriller author by trade, but I enjoy reading science fiction, particularly military science fiction. I wanted to take our thriller style of writing and bring it to military-science fiction realm and explore the type of story arcs I want to read, but haven't been written yet.
What or who inspired you to become an author?
I was originally inspired to get into writing by a therapist at the VA. I had been seeing a therapist and counselor at the Veterans Administration to help me with the PTSD challenges I was going through. One of them suggested I look into writing therapy, so I did. At first, it was about writing out the various triggering events that caused my PTSD. Those events eventually led me to write a book about my experiences in Iraq and publishing it. From there, writing was more of a hobby and way of relieving stress. Then in 2016, I started to earn a few thousand dollars a month from my writing. That ultimately led me to believe I could make a career out of writing. I started learning as much as I could about marketing while my wife continued to work as my editor until we hired a full-time editor to help us craft even better books. In 2017, our writing suddenly took off with our series the Red Storm. From there, the rest was history as they say.
What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?
This is a tough one. Growing up, I really enjoyed reading books written by Harry Turtledove. From there, I graduated to reading books by Vince Flynn and Tom Clancy. Then I started reading a lot of biography's and books about American presidents and titans of industry. I wanted to learn about these successful men and try to figure out what it was they had, that others either didn't or hadn't figured out. A science fiction book I really enjoyed was Old Man's Wars. I thought the characters were well developed and the author had a great way of telling a complex story.
Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?
I think I'd want to talk with JK Rowling. I'd like to ask her about what got her into writing? How did she come up with the idea for the Harry Potter series and how did she outline it? Did it take on a life of it's own as she began to write the first couple of books. I'd ask her about why she didn't give up when she'd gotten so many rejections before she got her first yes. I'd then ask her about how does an author follow up on an epic series. It's one thing to produce a hit or killer series, it's a whole other story to repeat that process over and over again. That's the mark of a really good author, when they are able to keep producing hit after hit. I want to learn about that, I want to know what's been her secret and how does she overcome the mental blocks all writers face. I think she's such an incredible success story and I'd really like to discet what she did and really try to understand it better not just for myself, but for others to learn from.
What's your favorite thing about writing?
For me, is the freedom to write and work from home or anywhere I go. I love the flexibility. I love being able to take a nap at 1pm just because I'm tired and want to.Then I can get back to writing after I've refreshed my mind. You can't do that at a 9-5 job. I love the flexibility, I love being able to spend more time with my kids as they grow up.
What is a typical day like for you?
For me, it starts by getting my kids breakfast ready. Then I help my wife get them dressed and lunches made. I usually take drive them to school while my wife starts work. I usually spend from 9 to 6 writing and handling the marketing aspect of our job. From 6 to 8pm is family time with the kids. Then I'll either spend a couple of hours with my wife watching a movie or I'll go back to writing depending on what scene I'm working on. But mind you, this schedule I outlined is a six day a week operation. I usually take off a solid 8 hours on Saturday, but aside from that, I work six days a week.
What scene from Into the Stars was your favorite to write?
For me, it's the ground combat scenes. We have a couple of really good ones in this book and those are the ones I like to write the most. I spent 3.5 years in Iraq, I've survived more than a thousand rocket and mortar attacks, my vehicle being shot up and my helicopter taking ground fire. When you've lived through all of that, you gain a lot of experience and understanding of how to write these really compelling scenes. I've had many readers tell me they almost felt like they were reliving their own PTSD experiences from the war. For me, that's exactly what I'm doing when I write these scenes. I'm reliving real life scene that scared the hell out of me and I put them to paper for our books. That's why they are so real because they were very real to me.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
I can be a workaholic. I have a goal I want to achieve and I work myself to the bone to achieve those goals. Sitting in my office behind my computer screen, I have a large picture that says, "In order to become the 1%, you must do what the other 99% won't." I think that saying is incredibly true. Writing is a tough business, if you want to succeed in this business, then you need to work hard and you need to outwork everyone else. Because we're self-published author, we're responsible for every aspect of publishing from editing to marketing, to content creation and reader engagement. That's a lot, it's a lot to handle, but if you can do it, and do it well, it provides you a level of economic independence nothing else can. We're finishing our forth year of writing and we've officially sold more than one million dollars in books. That's incredible to have achieved in such a short period of time and it's largely because we work hard and we write compelling stories people want to read and tell their friends about.

Interview with Melinda R. Cordell, Author of Dragon's Inferno
What can you tell us about your new release, Dragon's Inferno?
It’s the second book in the Dragonriders of Fiorenza series. A new character comes into play – Neva, who was Fia’s closest friend years ago before her family was driven out of the city and exiled for supporting the Sienese army. Fia comes back into Neva’s life by crashing her dragon into Neva’s bean field while being pursued by the Pope’s army. Now Neva’s trying to hide Fia from the authorities, while trying to hide a secret from Neva – that Neva’s people are the ones who kidnapped Fia’s father and are holding him captive. Neva’s also an enchantress, which in medieval Italy could get her burned at the stake. It’s a book full of magic, dragons, and there at the end of the book we have the biggest dragon race you ever saw, and it’s glorious.
What or who inspired you to become an author?
It’s been so long ago that I can’t remember. I just started writing these little bitty stories in first grade, and when I was in third grade I was folding pieces of notebook paper, stapling one side, then cutting out the pages so I could make books out of them. Writing books was just always something I loved doing.
What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?
Top 5, Classics Edition: Dante’s Commedia; To the Lighthouse, Virginia Woolf; The Odyssey, Homer (Emily Wilson’s translation is very good); Truman, David McCullough; and I’m leaving the last spot blank for the book I remember next week and think “THAT’S the one I should have put on this list!”
Top 5, Fantasy Edition: So You Want to Be a Wizard by Diane Duane; the entire Earthsea series by Ursula K. Le Guin; Sabriel by Garth Nix; everything that Nnedi Okorafor has ever written, and I mean everything; and The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty.
Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?
I’d like to bring back Ursula K. Le Guin just because I want to talk to her and I never did.
What's your favorite thing about writing?
I like having written. Writing new stuff is kind of hard sometimes, and often I’m just throwing words at the wall to see what sticks – or that’s what it feels like. Then I have to come back in later and clean it all up and figure out what the heck the characters were thinking and feeling, and then I look around and see if I can bring in a little conflict and add some funny bits – and after a while I have something decent, and then I’m like “Oh! Okay, that’s better” and then I feel better about myself and the world. But it takes a while. As my daughter says, it’s a process.
What is a typical day like for you?
I work full time as a proofreader for a cattle organization, but at the moment we’re working from home, so I work in the kitchen and my 8-year-old kid is doing second grade stuff as a virtual learner nearby. It’s kind of chaotic sometimes. I do the bulk of my writing at night when I’m falling asleep. I have this little Alphasmart Neo, which is a simple digital keyboard they made for schoolkids back in the day. It runs on three AA batteries and if you pop open the back, its CPU is a DragonBall Z 32-bit processor. You can’t play DragonBall Z on the Neo – all you can do on it is write. I write as I’m falling asleep, or when I’m waking up, or at random times in the day. Then I upload this messy writing stuff to my computer, clean it up, and that’s part of my word count. It’s crazy but it works.
Mine cost $25 with shipping and handling. Don’t pay a whole lot of money for one – watch for them on Ebay and you can generally find a nice, low-price model.
What scene from Dragon's Inferno was your favorite to write?
I always like writing the scenes where Fia’s interacting with her dragon, Ryelleth. Those two are such a good team, and they love each other so much. Ryelleth is a lot of fun to write about.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
It’s your world so live in it!

Interview with L. Steele, Author of The Billionaire's Secret
What can you tell us about your new release, The Billionaire's Secret?
It's the hottest, angstiest novel I have written. Saint the main character blew me away. He took the reins and ran with it... until he met Victoria who brought him to his knees.
What or who inspired you to become an author?
It's the only thing I have ever wanted to be since I can remember.
What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?
Pam Godwin's - Deliver Series
Jessica Hawkins - Something in the Way
LJ Shen - Vicious
Pepper Winters - Tears of Tess
JA Huss - Eighteen
Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?
I'd love to interview all five of the authors mentioned above about their writing process, how they get the lightbulb moments while writing, what they do when they hit a wall in the writing process.
What's your favorite thing about writing?
The discipline of it. Kind of like a swordsmith. You wake up and you write... no matter what's happening in your world, you write. There's a certainty and yet an unpredictability to it that's stimulating, and then you continuously challenge yourself to raise the bar.
What is a typical day like for you?
It's chasing the words-- trying to hit the goal, without overdoing it, and spending time with my husband in the evening.
What scene from The Billionaire's Secret was your favorite to write?
When they first meet -- and both of them are struck by the other... and Saint can't understand why he is attracted to her; it's never happened to him before.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
I try to live in the moment. It's the closest you can get to peace and being content with yourself.
