Interview with Elyse Hoffman, Author of The Book of Uriel

What can you tell us about your new release, The Book of Uriel?

The Book of Uriel is the story of an imaginative little boy and his friend and protector, a German linguist, both of whom go through their own little heroic journeys. The linguist, Uwe, struggles with his desire to stay safe and return home to his children and his moral obligations towards Uriel and the Jews, whom he has the power to save, though such a bold action may cost him his life. Uriel, the little boy, is hidden by Uwe, kept safe right under the nose of the German commander. Uriel has always been fascinated by the myths and folktales of his people, and those folktales that seem to come true for him as he is contacted by the Archangels and given a mission to save the Guardian angel of the Jewish People from the Angel of Death, a mission that is important, as the Jews will all die without their guardian, but also dangerous for both him and Uwe. Their two stories weave together, and the whole book is basically a combination of a lesser-known aspect of Holocaust history---the Holocaust by bullets carried out by mobile killing squads in Eastern Europe---and Jewish folklore, borrowing elements and creatures from classic Jewish fairytales. It’s definitely a very unique novel.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

Just a need to, I guess! I have stories I want to tell, and I like to write them out, there’s really nothing else to it!

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

I actually don't have any ‘favorite’ books, since I really tend to like different books in different genres and even books in the same genre for very different reasons. For nonfiction generally, I like anything by Martin Gilbert, especially his tome about the Holocaust which is really helpful for my research for writing my books. I’m also a big fan of Alice Hoffman, especially The Dovekeepers. I really love The Book Thief, which I feel has a lot of similarities to The Book of Uriel and was a big inspiration to me. I also love a whole lot of books about folklore and mythology, but I’m partial to the compilations of Jewish folklore done by Howard Schwartz, especially Elijah’s Violin. I also have always loved The Odyssey. And being a Jewish woman, I also like to revisit the Torah and especially love The Book of Jonah.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

Assuming I can yank people out of history, I would probably pick Homer. As I said before, I really love The Odyssey, but I’m also very interested in how stories change and adapt over time, and I’d definitely want to ask how close the versions we have of his works are to the stories he told orally, and how many different versions he told.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

The carpal tunnel and anxiety, haha. Honestly, I think very few authors enjoy the process of writing as much as being able to hold and see the finished product. Of course, once you hold that finished product that’s when the Internal Editor comes out to harass you about every comma and how bad of a writer you are. I do often like planning out my books, and looking at the difference between my outline and what actually manifests is always pretty fun.

What is a typical day like for you?

Wake up, feed dog, pet dog, write, do law school work, pet cat, pet dog again, repeat as needed until I collapse.

What scene from The Book of Uriel was your favorite to write?

I enjoyed writing Uriel’s little ‘flashback’ scenes. I did a lot of research into what life was like in Jewish shtetls in Poland and writing about Uriel’s ‘happier’ times while still keeping in focus the issues that existed in the shtetls even before the Nazis arrived (ableism in his case as he was born mute.)

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Not exactly, but I do try to keep this one in mind: “Our lives are fashioned by our choices. First we make our choices. Then our choices make us.” – Anne Frank.

Interview with Victoria Saccenti, Author of Titanian's Phoenix

What can you tell us about your new release, Titanian's Phoenix?

“Titanian’s Phoenix” follows the prequel “Beloved Titanian”, a short story published in October 2019. The doomed Greek Titans, knowing their time was ending, mated with other magical creatures to procreate a new powerful Titanian race. The Titanian universe is wide. Several mythical pantheons and races, such as elves, fae, shifters, vampires, fairies, and others have thrived until recently when a new threat has surfaced.

This realm coexists with the human plane, except humans, because of their lack of power, go about their lives unaware of magic and the struggle for power raging around them.

I’m truly excited about this series and I’m already writing book two.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

My parents introduced me to the world of reading, which sparked my imagination and started my love affair with words. Back then, I wrote plays and fairy tales, the kind a little girl could dress up for, dance around in, and pretend she was a princess or fantastical being. Of course, I didn’t take any of that seriously. The passion didn’t slow down as years passed. One night a complete storyline presented itself out of nowhere. I told a dear friend about it, and with her encouragement I pursued it to where I am today.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

“The Lymond Chronicles” and “House of Niccolò” by the talented Dame Dorothy Dunnett † top the list. By far, in my humble opinion, the best historical fiction writer of the 20th century. I also read in Spanish, so I would have to include “One Hundred Years of Solitude” by Nobel Laureate Gabriel García Márquez, “The Green Jade Heart” by Salvador de Madariaga, “The House of the Spirits”, by Isabel Allende, and “Like Water for Chocolate”, by Laura Esquivel—all in the original language.

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

Unfortunately, my first and second choice are no longer with us. If I could, I’d invite Dame Dorothy Dunnett †. I’d love to find out how did she manage to write the choice between the boys? It’s cryptic, I know, but I don’t want to spoil the story for future readers. Otherwise, I would invite Kresley Cole. I’d like to discuss her continued inspiration. Her books are fun and her muse is quite active.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

The creative process and the invitation are the best parts. Characters invite the writer into their world. When that happens, I let go and follow their lead. I’m reading a new book each time. It’s a wondrous experience.

What is a typical day like for you?

Before I go to bed, I try to visualize the characters in my WIP. Where are they and what do they want? First thing in the morning, I make a cup of coffee, head to the writing cave, and let loose the thoughts that stewed during the night. Sometime around two in the afternoon, I tackle non-writing matters, chores, house stuff, dinner.

What scene from Titanian's Phoenix was your favorite to write?

Maya’s awakening. Ooh, sorry. I can’t say anymore.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Live today, like it’s the last day of your life. Don’t hold grudges. Everyone deserves a second chance, and last but not least, “Judge not, that ye be not judged.” Matthew 7:1 KJV

Interview with Thomas H. Ward, Author of Critical Incidents: Korea - The Rok

What can you tell us about your new release, Critical Incidents: Korea - The Rok?

This story takes place in South Korea. Jack Gunn, by accident, uncovers a plot to start the next Korean War or possibly a World War. North Korea wants to take over South Korea and will do anything to make that happen. Mi-young, Jack's lover, puts her life on the line to help stop the terrorists along with Jack's best friend Lee. They can trust no one as some government and military people may be involved with the terrorists. Too many things don't add up. The clock is ticking as the suspected date of the attack is approaching.

All the locations mentioned in this book are real and the characters are based on persons that I knew over the many years I spent in Korea. I have tried to make the reader feel the Korean culture and differences between the USA and South Korea. Critical Incidents was one of my favorite stories to write.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

My publisher and my CPA inspired me to write fiction books after I had written a couple of business books. They believed my experiences and travel stories would make good reading. I soon found out I liked telling my stories, but really liked the fact that others enjoyed reading them. The great reviews I receive are very rewarding. I am very lucky and pleased to have such great fans reading my stories.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

This is a hard question to answer. I will give a few that helped me as a young man to become interested in reading and writing. RED BADGE OF COURAGE, OLDMAN AND THE SEA, THE THREE MUSKETEERS, and THE HOLY BIBLE.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

Writing a story puts me into another time and space. Once you get zoned in you become your characters. Writing is a lot like acting in that sense, but you are playing more than one part at a time.

What is a typical day like for you?

I don't have a typical day that anyone else would enjoy hearing about. Actually, it is very dull, but when I am writing a book I like to wake early, usually about 5 am, grab a cup of java and then get on my computer banging out new ideas for the storyline. I might add that I do write in my private office, a totally quiet place. My best thoughts come early while my mind is fresh. I may stop to have breakfast with my wife after 2 or 3 hours. Then resume until lunchtime. After lunch I do research or phone calls that are related to my book. By 4 pm I am burned out and eat dinner, relaxing sometimes in front of the fire with my wife and dogs.

An Author however is always thinking about his book ... how to improve it, or a new idea flows into your head for the storyline, so you make a note of it.

What scene from Critical Incidents: Korea - The Rok was your favorite to write?

In the beginning of the book is the car chase where Jack, Lee, and Mi-young are being chased in Gumi Korea on a stormy night by the Gumi gangsters. Yes, there are bad guys in Korea. Yes, there are gangsters in Korea. Every country has people who will do anything for money.

I have been driving in Korea many times and my driving skills are far superior than the average person in Korea. I had never written about a car chase so it fit in the storyline very nicely.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

"In every truth is non-truth, and in every fiction there is non- fiction." ~ Thomas H. Ward

Interview with Mark Wells, Author of Gate of Shadows

What can you tell us about your new release, Gate of Shadows?

It’s the second book in the Cambridge Gothic fantasy series, following the Amazon British Horror bestseller, College of Shadows. The action takes place in the winter term at Cambridge University. Once again dark forces are converging on the college’s snowbound courts. All your favorite characters are back – Nick, Annabel, Giles and their secretive Professor Gupta. And this time they are pitted against a host of new threats both from this world and beyond.

What books are currently on your nightstand?

I’ve just finished Different Seasons, a short story collection by Stephen King including The Shawshank Redemption and Stand by Me, which I loved. I’m currently reading Drachenfels, a dark and gritty horror story by Kim Newman, set in the Warhammer world. After that, I plan to read the debut novel of a new British author, Rosalind Tate, whose book Stranded looks interesting.

What advice would you give your teenage self?

Do what you love, and you’ll probably end up being good enough to make a living from it. Instead, I read law at Cambridge University to get a professional qualification, when my real love was modern history. I think if I’d studied history instead, I’d have got a better degree and become a writer sooner. It wasn’t until I was 55 years old that I finally decided to pursue my dream. Still, better late than never.

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?

My guilty secret is that I am a huge Warhammer fan. I’ve been collecting and painting armies of fantasy miniatures for years. So, if I had an extra hour in the day, that’s where you’d find me. Sitting at my desk, listening to an audiobook, and painting units of Space Wolves.

What makes your world go round? Why does it bring you joy?

I get up every morning wanting to write. It could be anything, a letter to my sons, a response to one of my readers, a short story for my subscribers (www.marknwells.com) or the next book in the Cambridge Gothic series. As an introvert, part of the joy of writing is being able to express thoughts and feelings through the voices of my characters. I’m often surprised sometimes by what comes out of their mouths. Every day I learn something new about my craft and myself!

What scene in Gate of Shadows was your favorite to write?

It has to be a night scene when the students gain access to the college cellars via a disused river entrance. Only after descending into the labyrinthine tunnels in search of a mysterious trunk, do they begin to suspect that they are not the only ones groping around in the dark… It’s the sort of scene I love writing – full of menace and tension as the friends come to realize how much trouble they are in. And that, of course, is only the beginning...

The Story Behind The Hero I Need by Nicole Snow

By Nicole Snow

Challenges to love are almost as common as romance tropes, the beating heart a story, and I've seen them all as long as I've been in the kissing book business. But there are times when I just can't resist the extra quest for originality. Maybe that's why I took on the insane task of dropping a secret tiger into the middle of small-town North Dakota in my latest fiery book, The Hero I Need.

Willow Macklin only has one chance to save Bruce, a five-hundred pound Bengal tiger, from a very shady big cat sanctuary. Yes, there's a certain amount of surprise built-in to a wild tiger rescue mission, but love is the last thing she expects when she collides head-on with Grady McKnight.

Encountering gorgeous, distraught Willow feels like the biggest jolt of his life—right after he's agreed to put her up at his place, along with her freaking tiger. This is hardly typical for the grump-tastic, walled off, and dangerously handsome Grady. After all, he's lived the last few years of his life raising twin girls as a single dad between running after his bar. No drama, no critters, and no women were sacrosanct rules.

Leave it to Little Miss Tiger Thief to detonate big daddy's rule book in a matter of days. And soon, finding a new home for Bruce and dismembering a black market animal trade might be the least of their worries. Because Willow feels just a little too right in his world, especially when she tumbles head over heels for her unlikely hero and his adorable ten-year-old daughters. Hearts, be still.

Destiny has no chill in this book. Grady swore off love for good reason, and Willow never found the right spark before him, but somewhere in the worries, the laughs, and the ominous task ahead—oh, yes. There's an impossible attraction that threatens to upend everything. Far more than any stolen tiger ever will.

Seriously, I hope you adore the original bite and the stark, naked emotion in this pulse-pounding, funny, and heartfelt small-town romance. It's a detour through crazytown to a worthy Happily Ever After for two human heats and one big tiger alike, but I've always loved to grab my stories by the horns and ride where they bring me. Don't miss The Hero I Need while it is Free to read with Kindle Unlimited!
