Interview with Michelle Felix, Author of Whole Heart

What can you tell us about your new release, Whole Heart?

Whole Heart: One Woman’s Incredible and Heartbreaking Journey from Africa to America is non-fiction in the autobiographical genre. It is suitable for the general adult reading audience and was penned by author Michelle Felix. The book follows the author’s journey from her difficult childhood in Africa, filled with family problems, to her transition to living in America, where she pursued her goal of being free from her past. The book explores how the cycle of painful experiences and the grief that they caused is a cycle that the author found a way to break through, finding a way to use the pain to create a positive purpose for her life.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

After many years of finally finding the courage to talk about my story, many people suggested I write a book or make a movie of my life story. I was also inspired, especially during the pandemic; after seeing so much suffering and pain on media/television, I felt a moral obligation to do something, and I wanted to share my story with the hope of bringing a glimpse of healing and inspiration to others.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

  • The Shack
  • Becoming Michelle Obama
  • I can only imagine
  • Purpose Driven Life
  • Greenlights

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

Tom Hanks, what was your favorite movie role, and I am hoping he will say, Forest Gump?

What's your favorite thing about writing?

Putting my emotions, thought, and personal views into words. It was a spiritual journey for me, and in many ways, I was healing myself.

What is a typical day like for you?

Walk the dog, work, home, walk dog, cook, watch a show, and fall asleep in front of the television by 8 pm.

What scene from Whole Heart was your favorite to write?

Chapter 14: Hope Breaks Through. The day that I had left for the UK, I had accepted that my dad was only human. We all make mistakes, and though his mistakes had caused me deep suffering, I somehow knew in that moment at the airport that he was doing all he was capable of, and I saw and felt his love for me. No longer did I need my father to seek my forgiveness. That day, God showed me my fathers’ heart, and my soul was at peace. “Forgiveness liberates the soul. It removes fear. That is why it is such a powerful weapon.” - Nelson Mandela.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

“As long as love exists, we can heal.”- Michelle Felix.  Chapter 25: 2020, I know love has healed me in many ways. When all else fades, love still stands because nothing is more powerful than love itself.

Interview with Monica Murphy, Author of The Sophomore

What can you tell us about your new release, The Sophomore?

The Sophomore is the second book in my College Years series, and while it's a complete stand-alone, it does feature a couple that was originally in my Callahan series. The heroine has had feelings for the hero since high school, and he's never really thought of her in that way. Until she's ready to move on and he realizes what he's about to miss out on. It's full of unrequited love, frustration and the joy and pain of truly falling in love for the first time. Plus, it features strong friendships, which I love. This is such a supportive group - they all have each other's backs.

Who is your favorite fictional character from literature?

This question is almost impossible to answer but I am a hardcore fan of The Stand by Stephen King. So I'll have to say all of the characters from that book, the good and the bad. They all have such distinct voices. We even get the POV of a dog in that book. It's amazing.

What's on your writing desk?

A big mess! Post-Its, pens, two date books (I use both!), a notebook, gum. A coaster to set my cup of coffee on in the morning. A candle called Big Sur After Rain that smells nothing like Big Sur after rain, but whatever. LOL

What's the best writing advice you've ever received?

Finish the book. You can't do anything with an unfinished book so you must at least finish it!

How do you like to spend a rainy day?

We had an atmospheric river come through our part of California a few months ago and it dumped rain at my house for almost three days straight. For one of those days, I watched 90s movies with my teenage daughter and her best friend. That was so much fun! Their favorite was Fear with Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon. It's a classic!

What scene from The Sophomore was your favorite to write?

The ending! It's so romantic and big gesture and just really emotional. I actually cried while writing it. These two got to me in the best way!

Interview with Kate Danley, Author of George

What can you tell us about your new release, George?

George is a funny, irreverent fantasy adventure.  It involves knights and dragons and hitting things with swords.  But it also explores what happens when we make dumb life choices, and how the fallout can actually lead us to our best selves.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I have wanted to be a writer since elementary school.  I used to sit on the bus and write stories with friends.  Later, when we moved (hello, fellow military brats!) my new best friend and I would spend our lunches writing stories and hanging out in the school library.  I actually started my first novel when I was in the 6th grade.  Fifteen years of tinkering with it, I realized it was terrible and chucked it.  However, the book that I wrote after that ended up being the one that launched my career.

What's on your top 5 list for the best books you've ever read?

Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracey Kidder, Sunshine by Robin McKinley,  The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper, The Toymakers by Robert Dinsdale, The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly

Say you're the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

It probably seems like a super-nerdy gimme answer, but... I mean... can the answer be anything but Shakespeare?  And I would just ask, "Tell me about your process."  Because, COME ON.  Every time I sit down with one of his plays, it feels like falling in love.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

There have been moments where I have been given glimpses of how my stories have impacted people's lives, and it takes my breath away.  I once wrote a play, and at the audition were two actors who did a scene together.  They were complete strangers.  But they were cast as the romantic pair in my play, and what do you know, they fell in love!  And got married!  And I realized that all the blood, sweat, and tears of writing that play were so that these two people could meet.  It is a glimpse into the infinite.

What is a typical day like for you?

I host a daily writing sprint online with a group of fellow authors.  Every morning from ten til noon, we write.  The afternoon is then spent checking off the glamours various and sundry items on a writer's to-do list: laundry, marketing, scrubbing toilets, etc.

What scene from George was your favorite to write?

There is a scene that takes place in a magician's shop.  I believe I was taking an improv class a few years ago and dashed it out on a piece of paper during a dinner break.  I stumbled on it as I sat down to tackle this book, and it still makes me happy.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Embrace that you have no idea what you're doing, and allow yourself to be teachable.

The Story Behind No Gentle Giant by Nicole Snow

Fear. Not what you expect with a romance book, but let's be honest. It's one heck of a motivator in life, in overcoming your darkest hour, and even in love. Conquering it is definitely on center stage in my latest small-town romantic suspense, No Gentle Giant.

Felicity Randall lives in her dead father's shadow. For years, she's been haunted by his mistakes, and his old enemies just won't stop inserting themselves in her life. They're coming to collect on a debt she doesn't even understand. They're a threat to her dreams, her family, and even her beloved little coffee shop in a cozy Montana town. But even the worst problems can't keep a woman from admiring the gorgeous, kind, and utterly ginormous man who stops in regularly for his cup of joe.

And you'd better believe Paxton “Alaska” Charter has had his eye on the pretty, shy girl from the coffee shop. More than his eye, in fact, when his photography-obsessed teenage son accidentally helps smash up Felicity's shop during an accident. This single dad swore off women and love forever ago, but there's no denying the sizzle the instant he's drawn into Felicity's world.

For her, a former SEAL can take another plunge. Anything to unravel that mysterious, troubled look in her eyes and see her smile one freaking time.

It's so on. The mystery. The suspense. The thrill of love after an agonizing drought.

The deeper they dive into each other, the darker the secrets.

The brighter their hearts.

The hotter the nights.

The bigger and scarier the stakes.

Remember what I said about fear? This is a book about two battered hearts on a roller coaster dive into the abyss, bad memories, and the fight to rekindle a flame too massive to ignore. When Alaska steps up and takes control, he'll move heaven, earth, and sky for a chance at a Happily Ever After with Felicity—and he's sworn to convince her as soon as he lays claim to her heart. No matter how intense, infuriating, or dangerous it may be.
