Interview with K. Patrick Donoghue, Author of Dynewave (The Rorschach Explorer Missions Book 3)

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Dynewave?

Dynewave is book 3 in my scifi series (the Rorschach Explorer Missions) and is a continuation of the storylines from the earlier books in the series, Skywave and Magwave. The inspiration for all three books (and the prequel novella UMO) was a desire to look at alien life from a contrarian perspective. To me, it seems we search for signs of life beyond Earth that are analogous to those we find on Earth (simple or complex carbon-based life forms). So I wanted to explore the possibility of other kinds of life forms, including electromagnetic beings.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I tend to read mystery fiction and ancient history non-fiction the most. I guess that is why my books include twists typically found mysteries and elements of history/alternative history. With regard to scifi books, I read more non-fiction than fiction and I enjoy books that challenge conventional views of the universe/alien life.

What fictional world would you most like to visit?

I think it would be fascinating to explore a fictional human-compatible planet elsewhere in the universe, a planet similar to Earth in some ways but different in others. It would be amazing to imagine/visualize the differences and how they might alter human behavior.

What's your favorite thing about writing? What's your least favorite thing about it?

Favorite thing: I love employing my imagination to create stories/characters.

Least favorite thing: I wish I could write faster than I do.

What scene in Dynewave was your favorite to write?

About midway into the story, there are two related scenes that I really enjoyed writing. The first of the scenes depicts a mutiny that takes place aboard two spacecraft. The second of the scenes depicts the outcome of mutiny. I liked writing these scenes because of the twists that unfold during the action and because of the importance of the mutiny outcome to the climax of the overall story.

What will your next adventure or writing project be?

My next writing project will be a new story in my primary series, the Anlon Cully Chronicles. The stories in this series are part archaeology-based mysteries and part fantasy-adventure tales.

Interview with William Bernhardt, Author of Exposed (Splitsville Legal Thriller Series Book 2)

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Exposed?

This is my second Splitsville novel featuring Kenzi Rivera and her team of female associates. Kenzi is basically my mother, the wisest woman in the world, and her friends are my three sisters. I grew up surrounded by these wonderful women, who obviously had a huge influence on me, so this series is a family love letter, all about the strength of women and the different approaches they have to solving problems.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Exposed, what would they be?

I Am Woman, the immortal Helen Reddy ballad which unsurprisingly was my favorite song when I was eleven.

If you had to write a blurb for the last book you read, what would it say?

"First-class entertainment from the first page to the last." That's for The Alien Accord by Betsey Kulakowski. It's the third book in her Veritas Codex series about a female television investigator looking into the world's strangest mysteries, like Bigfoot and alien abductions. The author has so much energy and enthusiasm. You can tell she's having fun writing this, and that fun spills over into the reading experience.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

These days, I read more nonfiction than anything else. Because I've written over fifty novels, I'm sometimes too aware of writers and what they're doing, to take a back seat and just enjoy the book. But I love learning new things. I'm particularly fond of reading about history and the arts.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? Where did you write Exposed?

I really don't. Working at home while raising three children meant I had to learn to write whenever and wherever I could. I can write in the car or the doctor's office or the shopping mall. I write every day, some days more than others, but I always write. Most of Exposed was written in my brown leather recliner, which is easier on my back, but I also wrote some of it in Colorado (hiking trip) and in the Ozarks (writing retreat I taught).

What's the best advice you've ever received?

"If you're going to write, make sure you have something worth writing about."

Interview with Dale Mayer, Author of Simon Says...Jump (Kate Morgan Thrillers Book 2)

If you were in an elevator with a stranger and had 1 minute or less to describe Simon Says… Jump before the doors opened, what description would you give?

Criminal Minds meets Medium.

What's your favorite scene from your new release, Simon Says… Jump

It's an emotional scene where relates how she knows the bridge where the jumper went over and why. A hint of her background, a hint of her pain, and insight into her growth from where she'd been to where she was now.

What's your favorite thing about writing? What's your least favorite thing about it?

The actual writing part can be stressful so the final editing process is the sweet spot. The story is great, characters all work, the flow and pace are spot on and it's just making sure the word choices are fine tuned.

Which books would we be surprised to find on your shelves?

Course of Miracles! Dr. Seuss collection. I have eclectic tastes to go along with my eclectic writing.

What book should be required reading for all humans?

That I don't have an answer for. I have a wide-ranging interest in everything from global climate change, saving our oceans, life on another planet to self-improvement tomes to of course fiction for escape. I think more important than me choosing one is the wish to have people pick up a book - any book - and learn/experience something new.

If you had to pick one place to vacation for the rest of your life, where would you choose?

Home! Especially if that came with resort amenities, housekeeper, cook, entertainer, hike companion, surfing instruction, scuba diving trips, and a 24 hour a day all inclusive spa. lol

What will your next adventure or writing project be?

Ooooh, now that is in the realm of mystery! After having just released a brand new thriller series, and with a brand new military series coming in January, I'm crossing ts and dotting is to make sure all is perfect. Then I'll turn my attention to something. Should it be funny? Or sad this time? Another mystery? Or maybe something totally different like women's fiction? It's hard to say. I'll know when I open up to a new page and start. Before then I haven't a clue. 🙂

Interview with JK Noble, Author of Hale: The Rise of the Griffins

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Hale?

The inspiration came from a dream. It was so powerful that I had to write it down, and before I knew it, I wrote a book. I was only sixteen. I shopped it around my freshman year of college but was unsuccessful. So, I put away my writing to focus on my studies, though the story continued to haunt me. I could not focus during classes and constantly daydreamed about revamping the story and adding more details to the world and each character.

If you woke up in the world of Hale, what is the first thing you would do?

The characters of HALE are my longtime friends of eight years. I would love to see them truly exist and live up to their heroism, pushing the boundaries of my meager imagination. Likewise, I often dream of experiencing the magic in the world of HALE firsthand. What would it be like to wield the three eyes, Camden’s shield, or Ianna’s potions? What would it feel like to be blessed during the welcoming moon ceremony, transform, and fly with my griffin brethren? What adventures await me if I were a part of the story, witnessing Palla’s spirit magic, Bimmorian technology, or having a run-in with creatures like nymphs and woodland demons?

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

My favorite genre to read and write is fantasy. In the world of fantasy, the creator can make up any rule of nature, magic, culture, and people. They can create a history between characters or nations. They can even invent languages! There are no limits or boundaries in fantasy. The best fantasy writers have a way of captivating their readers, pulling them into an epic world with tantalizing twists and turns. Some inspiring writers also use fantasy tropes like the supernatural or magic to symbolize the troubles of the human condition. Take Anne Rice, the author of An Interview with a Vampire, for example. Rice used vampirism as a metaphor for “lost souls” in terms of her lack of faith and search for God, which is very poetic. Or C. S. Lewis, who used the world of Narnia to communicate faith and spirituality.

What fictional world would you most like to visit?

My taste in fictional universes might be childish to some people. The following titles house inspiring characters that resonate with me. Books whose world I’d like to visit are Narnia, and the fantasy universes of the Golden Compass, and Inkheart. Other fantasy universes I’d love to venture into are the worlds of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Treasure Planet! However, stories cannot exist without conflict, and each of these titles offers very dangerous situations, which is why I'd prefer visiting Narnia after the last battle, The Golden Compass before the severing of demons with child, Inkheart after the death of the Shadow, and the world of avatar only during Aang's lifetime after the defeat of the Firelord. Each of these titles has beautifully made worlds with unique magic systems and themes that anyone can easily get lost in.

What genre did you expect to hate, but ended up loving?

I love to read all sorts of books. I’ll give anything a chance. I sometimes try to go out of my comfort zone and read suspense thrillers and horror. In those genres, I look up to authors like Dean Koontz. Also, the romance genre is never up my alley, nor is gothic/supernatural romance, and yet I love books like Fallen and Beautiful Creatures. That goes to show that talented writers and creators can still captivate people who would not usually gravitate towards that particular topic/genre.

What's your favorite thing about writing? What's your least favorite thing about it?

There are so many things I love about writing like getting into a flowing state where I experience no blockages. I love being surprised by where the story takes me even after I’ve mapped out the plot. I also love to see people enjoy my work and most importantly resonate with the characters and their situations. That is the purpose of my writing. However, my least favorite thing about writing would be editing. While tedious, I have come to learn that editing is just as much of an art form as writing itself since there is so much to think about such as pacing, sentence structure, and vernacular specifically adjusted to the reader’s general understanding. When all these aspects come together, a story is brought to new heights since the writing is enhanced in a way that engages the reader at all stages.

What scene in Hale was your favorite to write?

There were many scenes I loved writing in Hale: The Rise of the Griffins. One of them is the Welcoming Moon scene as I imagined it a spiritual experience of transcendence. While writing this scene, it was my goal to have my readers feel the magic as if they were present during the celebration. I particularly enjoy detailing my fantasy world with rules, magic, culture, unique creatures, and epic battles.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I do not have a motto or single quote I live by. However, Rudyard Kipling’s poem titled “If” resonates deeply with me. The poem covers all aspects of the difficulties of being human, spoken in a way a parent would to their child. Astonishingly, it was written in 1895 yet still applies to the human condition. It proves that no matter how much the world advances and changes, the act of being truly human is perpetual.

What will your next adventure or writing project be?

After completing the HALE YA series, I plan to complete the children’s books and graphic novels for the HALE series before moving on to other forms of fantasy writing. But for now, I am still in the middle of my next adventure in HALE’s sequel, which will come out very soon. Those who are curious about what happens next to characters like Hale, Marcus, and Ellionna will be delighted by this next book!

Interview with Kimberly Readnour, Author of Heartbreak Hitter: A Hero Club Novel

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Heartbreak Hitter?

Rick, the main character from Heartbreak Hitter, had a minor role in Swinging Strike, book one of Cessna U Wildcats. He was drafted after his junior year and didn’t make any other appearance until he was mentioned in book three as being called up to the Boston Bears. I wanted him to have his own story, so when the Cocky Hero Club opened for submissions, I jumped at the chance. I knew he’d be a perfect match for a grown-up Hailey from Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward’s book, Park Avenue Player. Therefore, a fake relationship, baseball romance was born.

What's your favorite scene from your new release, Heartbreak Hitter

My favorite scene would be the “paint scene.” Hailey may work as a journalist, but she’s an artist at heart. One night, Rick surprises her while she’s painting. Let’s just say things get hot enough to melt paint.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Romance is, hands down, my favorite genre to read. It’s only natural that I write what I love

What book did you expect to hate, but end up loving?

Hmm, I usually don’t start books I don’t think I’ll like, but I’ll go with Crimson Legacy by Michelle Bryan. It’s a dystopian/ fantasy book, which isn’t my favorite genre at all, but the author has a way of pulling you into a story. Once I started reading her work, I was hooked.

Which books would we be surprised to find on your shelves?

I think people would be surprised to find titles by Stephen King on my shelves. My passion will always be romance, but when I was younger, I did love a good thriller once in a while.

If Heartbreak Hitter is turned into a movie, who would you cast to play the characters?

So I’m going to go off course and pick an actual baseball player. James McCann from the Detroit Tigers would fit Rick’s profile perfectly. For Hailey, I’d choose Odeya Rush. I think she exudes the right amount of confidence needed to play Hailey’s role.

What will your next writing project be? Will we see these characters again in a sequel or spin-off?

I’m working on Caught Looking, which is the fourth installment in the Cessna U Wildcats Series. I would love to include Rick and Hailey in the extended epilogue, but I would have to get permission to use those characters since they are part of the Cocky Hero Club.

Interview with M.L. Blackbird, Author of A Wish Too Dark And Kind

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write A Wish Too Dark And Kind?

As an ex-pat who has lived for many years far away from where I grew up, I am fond of the themes of “connections” and “isolation,” so I wanted to tell a story that incorporated these two themes. Initially, this played a role only in the plot and it is a key element of what the party and the ritual in the story are. Over time, these themes have seeped into the magic system, as one can see in the concepts of a magical network. At the same time, I had a conflict; on one side I wanted to build a hard magic system, that is closer to my taste, but I also wanted the story to have dark/horror tones. The two things don’t really work well together, so for many years, I dwelled in a limbo where I couldn’t decide the right direction. It turns out that traditional European occultism, another thing I’ve always been fascinated by, could help me. I included many of those traditions, together with concepts coming from physics and mathematics, to create a magic system that, while being hard, is never fully presented to the reader. I think that helps in creating the creepy atmosphere I wanted by always leaving the reader with the impression that there is something going on that they are missing.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of A Wish Too Dark And Kind, what would they be?

This is a brilliant question because I created a playlist that I listened to while writing the book. There are way more songs in the playlist, but these are the ones I always associated with the main characters:

Alex: Irregular God–Kevin Penkin
Daniel: Don’t Be So Serious–Low Roar
Roman: Hurt–Johnny Cash
Ioan: When the Night is Long–Shelby Merry
Van Vloed: Blue Lips – Regina Spektor
Hermann: Miss Misery–Elliott Smith
Sophia: Home–Aurora
Celeste: Lilium – Kumiko Noma
Leto: Rain – Steve Conte
Arnaud: Two songs for him, Behind Blue Eyes–The Who, and The Man Who Sold The World–Nirvana
Valentine: BB’s Theme–Ludwig Forssell

You can find the full playlist Here

If you had to write a blurb for the last book you read, what would it say?

A Scotsman with expertise in whisky and magical sigils and a hobgoblin with a penchant for mischief investigate criminals who smuggle the Fae. All of this while they try to escape a curse that menaces to kill them through freaky accidents and the police who are wondering why people keep dying around them. The book is “Ink & Sigil” by Kevin Hearne, and you should read it; it is really cool!

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love pretty much anything fantasy and sci-fi that makes me lose myself in the intricacies of a new world, a magic system, or some complex scientific theory. I am especially fond of stories that use fantasy and sci-fi elements to explore deeper themes of society or human (psychological) conditions. As such, I read more dark, grim dark, and gothic fantasy with horror themes. In a sense, you can say that I read pretty much in the same genre I like to write.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.) Where did you write A Wish Too Dark And Kind? (your couch, a coffee shop, a bar... hey - we won't judge)

I have a couple. Probably the quirkiest is that, while I write, I hate silence. If I write in complete silence, my brain roams, and I get distracted and unproductive. To fix this, I listen to music–often loud music–while writing. Another quirk habit I have is that I write standing; I built a standing desk and in the last year I almost never wrote a line sitting. I wrote most of A Wish Too Dark And Kind at home, but what “home” was changed a lot while I wrote it. In fact, I started writing it while I lived in Scotland and finished after I moved to Seattle. Given my obsession to keep writing under any conditions, I wrote in the weirdest places. The strangest I can think of is during a road trip to Iceland where I did not skip a writing night even while driving 4-5 hours during the day or after having climbed on a glacier. It was exhausting, but it was a lot of fun!

What's the best advice you've ever received?

In life, the best advice I received was to stop focusing so much on outcomes and start enjoying the process of making things. It was also important because it made me understand that while we cannot measure certain things in life with numbers, they are still important. In writing, instead, the best advice was to keep writing every day no matter what, especially when I didn’t want to write. Ultimately, this made me complete the book. Of course, it won’t always work, and in those days, self-compassion is a must, but writing every day is still a must for me.
