Interview with Elizabeth Stephens, Author of Taken By The Pikosa Warlord (Xiveri Mates Book 7)
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Taken By The Pikosa Warlord? When it comes to romance tropes, I love three things: barbarian warlords, enemies-to-lovers, and the end of the world. Taken by the Pikosa Warlord is set in a distant future, one in which the earth has been reduced to sand, rocks and rubble. To rebuild civilization, a group of scientists was put into a cryosleep. Their goal was to wake up four thousand years in the future to a completely empty earth, one that had recovered from the climate catastrophes and war of our present and that would be ripe and ready for rebuilding. But what did they find instead? Survivors. Now, the scientists must contend with warlords hardened by the savagery of the new world. They find an unexpected weapon in one scientist in particular, Halima. None of the tribes of this ravaged earth speak the same language, but Halima — the etymologist and interpreter — intends to unite them so that she can bring the Warlord Ero down. Through Halima, this book draws heavily on my love of language and the time I spent living, studying, and working in the Middle East and Africa. I lived in Cairo for a year, including during the Egyptian Revolution of 2011, and fell head over heels in love with it. I like to think of this book as The Arrival meets Mad Max meets my own experiences living around the world — from Cairo to Addis Ababa — meets the romance tropes I listed earlier meets Xiveri Mates magic 💫 If you woke up in the world of Xiveri Mates, what is the first thing you would do? I’d start on Kor and definitely do a bit of marauding with the four-armed Niahhorru space pirates before heading to Lemora for an evening watching the exploding Dark Flats and drinking lobba. I’d also very much like to take a dip in the Xamxin river on Voraxia and after that, I might head on over to Sasor to become a snake charmer. One place I wouldn’t go, though? Nobu. While I love the Okkari and his fated mate Xhea, I don’t do cold weather. If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of your book, what would they be? What are your ideal writing conditions? Set the scene for us. Sitting in front of my TV at 3 o’clock in the morning bleary-eyed and watching Criminal Minds. That’s it. That’s how you’ll find me writing 90% of the time. If you had to write a blurb for the last book you read, what would it say? Alpharoll saves the day! Surprisingly sweet jock meets his match in a strong, intelligent heroine who’s overcoming PTSD in this new adult sports romance. This book ticks all the boxes — fake date, slow burn, natural budding relationship, and all the steam. The Deal by Elle Kennedy, was an easy 5 star read from me. What romantic couple from literature makes you swoon? Which one is over-hyped? The romantic couple from the literature that makes me swoon most will always and forever be Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet. Sorry, I’m not more original, but I’m a sucker for this classic couple. I love every romance ever written that’s based on this trope and every version of this movie that exists and, of course, the original book. Overhyped? Sorry, but the couple from Bridgerton is arguably my least favorite pairing. While I loved the diversity of the TV show, I found the male lead far, far too toxic — actually, I found all the guys in that show too toxic — and that’s coming from someone who wrote a book where the hero tortures the heroine in the opening scene! I prefer a hero who will lay waste to armies for his heroine just so he can give her the world and Mr. Bridgerton didn’t quite cut it for me. Where did you write Taken By The Pikosa Warlord? I write everywhere! I’m always in motion when I write and while I do minimal amounts of creative writing at my desk, I’m most often spotted on my couch conjuring up words in front of the TV or at crowded coffee shops. The extra noise helps me zen out. What's the best writing advice you've ever received? Make my writing more dynamic by limiting the amount I use the verb “to be.” Include a link to my newsletter sign-up at the beginning and end of all of my books. Stack my promos. Don’t try to do everything! Pick 3 book marketing tools to focus on and stick to making those great so that way, I have more time to do what I actually like (and what actually brings in the bucks), which is to ✨write✨

Interview with Jennifer Snow, Author of Housewife Chronicles II
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Housewife Chronicles II? The Housewife Chronicles series of books is based on a TV series I wrote that is currently being pitched to Networks. I had so much fun creating this quirky group of 'housewives' that I wanted to expand their stories in novels and give each of the women their own book. Housewife Chronicles II is Grace's story and she is definitely one of my favorite characters in the series, but I may be biased because she's an author! If you woke up in the world of Housewife Chronicles II, what is the first thing you would do? Take a run with Beth, take a yoga class with Gina, and then meet up for weekly coffee to try to solve the latest murder mystery, of course 😉 If you had to write a blurb for the last book you read, what would it say? A fun, exhilarating ride! When two friends go on a road trip to find the truth about their past, the truth is not what they'd expected. What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write? I love reading romance and thrillers (both of my genres), but my favorite is women's fiction that incorporates elements of both, which is probably why I love writing my Housewife Chronicles series-it has a bit of everything-humor, romance, and suspense. Do you have any quirky writing habits? Where did you write Housewife Chronicles II? I have an old-fashioned typewriter (one of my prized possessions) that I meditate in front of when I'm stuck on my book or screenplay. I used to write in my office at my desk when I lived in Alberta, Canada. But since moving to sunny Spain this year, I write outside by the pool on the deck table, surrounded by palm trees. Definitely better scenery, but it can also be a little distracting! What's the best advice you've ever received? "No one cares about my career as much as I do." It definitely helped me realize that I need to be the one working towards my goals and fighting for the career I want. Taking advice from amazing people and choosing which to follow and which to ignore if it doesn't align with my dreams for myself and my career.

Interview with Matt McMahon, Author of Species of One
What's the story behind the story? Who wouldn’t want to live in a society where everyone is nice and genuinely care for their neighbors? That eutopia is not a fantasy. It exists. At least it exists in twenty percent of all societies, populated equally by men and women. They are the “Highly Sensitive People” (HSPs) first identified twenty-five years ago in Dr. Elaine N. Aron’s “The Highly Sensitive Person.” Species of One brings the reader into their lives as characters from different backgrounds adapt to their world. Some were affected by traumas such as child abuse and war. Others grew in supportive environments. An emotional journey of triumphs and tragedies we can all share. What inspired you to write Species of One? As an HSP myself, a 2019 non-fiction book about Orchids (the most creative of HSPs) and Dandelions (non-HSPs) that painted a dire future for HSPs from unsupportive families or subjected to childhood trauma concerned me. In writing Species of One, I wanted to show how important HSP’s are to our world and how even damaged Orchids can thrive. What's the best writing advice you've ever received? It’s all about the characters and their arcs. How different they are at the end of the story than they were at the beginning. If you had to write a blurb for the last book you read, what would it say? My last fiction read was Matt Haig’s The Midnight Library, an inventive reimagining of the “It’s a Wonderful Life” moral that makes us see that the lives we are living are perfect the way they are. What are your ideal writing conditions? As an attorney, I got into the habit of dictating anything lengthy back before everyone had a computer. When computerized speech recognition became a reality, I was hooked. It allows me to dictate whenever and wherever works best, driving, at home, or in the office. Editing the computer transcription is the first round of edits that helps sharpen the story and prepare me for the next scene. What's your favorite genre to read? I am a fan of literary fiction that profoundly explores the human condition, obstacles thrown in our paths, and how they mold our lives. Every fourth fiction book I read (I read equal amounts of fiction and non-fiction) is a classic I didn’t get to read in my misspent youth. When I read Don Quixote a few years back, I couldn’t believe it was written more than 400 years ago. Is it the same as your favorite genre to write? So far, I have written a literary psychological novel and a near-future political thriller. I don’t want to write in only one genre. I want to write stories that spotlight overlooked subjects and have lessons to enrich our lives. Where did you write Species of One? I dictated much of it while driving and visiting scenes in the Catskill Mountains where the story is set. The rest was written and edited in my home office. I often work in a dark room to block out distractions and wholly immerse myself as if I’m in the story. What was your favorite scene to write in Species of One? Sorry, that would be a spoiler! If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading Species of One what would it be? That everyone is perfect exactly as they are, and there is always a place where they belong.
