Interview with C.C. Wood, Author of Ensnared in Shadow

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Ensnared in Shadow?

The characters in this book were secondary in earlier books in the series. Marcus, the hero, hasn't had the easiest life and I wanted him to finally get his happily ever after. He deserved it and so did Merry, the heroine.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love just about all genres but I tend to read paranormal romance, romantic comedy, urban fantasy, and romantic fantasy.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Since the honest answer to this would be as long as one of my books, I'll just say that I'm eagerly anticipating releases from Elise Nova and Ilona Andrews this year.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The scene where Marcus and Merry, the two main characters, meet in person for the first time. It's awkward, a little sweet, but also has undercurrents of tension.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Even though I have a perfectly good desk, I prefer to use a lap desk and write in bed or sit on my couch.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I always try to write the story I want to read, first and foremost. Then, I work to make it better.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I want them to feel as though they have a connection to the characters and I really hope they enjoyed the story!

Interview with S.B. Alexander, Author of The Hunted

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Hunted?

The character of Sam Mason came to life in the first Vampire Navy SEAL series. The plot revolved around his disappearance, and he had somewhat of a leading role alongside his twin sister, Jo. But Sam needed his own books, and I’ve had his story - The Hunted - simmering for the last few years. Plus, my fans have been asking for more out of that first series. So it was a perfect time to tell his story!

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Hunted, what would they be?

Wolves by Sam Tinnesz, Sound off the Sirens by Sam Tinnesz, Take Me to Church by Hozier, and Bring On The Dark by Cari Clara.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Paranormal and Fantasy Romance.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Chicagoland Vampires by Chloe Neill, Shadowbeast Shifters by Jaymin, Eve Up in The Treehouse by K.K. Allen, and Crave by Tracy Wolf.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

There were tons of scenes in The Hunted that I loved writing, but my favorite is the elevator scene where Sam is alone with Layla for the first time. I giggled all the way through that scene.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

A quirky one I would say is writing in Comic Sans. For some reason, the words flow better.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Make the best of life because it’s too darn short.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I would love readers to remember Sam and Layla.

Interview with Marti Shane, Author of Romeo

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Romeo: Unraveled?

First impressions can go a long way and sometimes in the wrong direction. My friends and I often laugh over drinks about how we first met, the bias we overcame, and the bonds we’ve created despite our first impressions of one another. Not everyone is easy to get close to – and the reasons are endless. However, it’s totally worth it.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Romeo: Unraveled, what would they be?

Blank Space by Taylor Swift for Bella.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Any kind of romance that has some heat. Crime and Thrillers are a plus. I love writing a mix of crime, action, and romance.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I'm super excited for Kristen Proby's new series, Single in Seattle.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I love the action scenes where your heart starts to pump while you're writing it. I don't want to spoil it...

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I am forever writing in my head. I've been known to leave the water running in the sink because I ran to type something before I forgot it. We've had several home repair disasters from it. I may have burned breakfast once or twice too.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Failure isn't losing. You haven't lost if you're still trying.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Their favorite supporting character, because they will definitely have their own story later in the series.

He is sent ‎back to Earth by the aliens, as they need the antidote to a mysterious disease from planet Earth. ‎ Now, Al-Khidr ‎has arrived on Earth, and unbeknownst to him, the alien rebel general has pursued him.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Cure for Stars (The Sphere of Destiny Trilogy Book 2), what would they be?

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

We may not be the only intelligent life in Universe. This book shows aliens that are far more intelligent than humans, but they too have limitations due to their planetary climatic conditions.

Interview with Karen Baugh Menuhin, Author of The Mystery of Montague Morgan

A possible murder without a body is one of the hardest murders to solve. Montague Morgan staged his disappearance, why did he do it? What happened when he did?

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Murder mystery! Yes, it's the same genre I write in.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Research books.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

A visit to the snow-covered house by christmas carol singers, two days before christmas eve. Everyone had to put on fixed grins and pretend there was nothing suspicious happening.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

There's always a cat and dog nearby.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Life is to be lived.

Interview with Eva Moore, Author of Reclaimed Dreams

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Reclaimed Dreams?

The Exposed Dreams series was inspired by a what-if question that stuck in my head while watching Fixer Upper on HGTV. What would happen when it was time to pass down the Magnolia business to the next generation? When I wrote the first three books in this series, I focused on the adult children in the family, chasing their dreams and falling in love. In the background, their parents’ marriage was crumbling under the strain of change and grief.

So many readers wrote to me asking if Jo & Dom were really going to be alright, that I knew I had to write their story. What began as a short novella turned into a full length novel tracing the ups and downs of their 40+ year marriage to its eventual redemption. The bulk of the story overlaps their children’s stories, interspersed with flashbacks to happier times.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Reclaimed Dreams, what would they be?

I can imagine Jo riding in Dom’s truck, windows down, on their way to Santa Cruz falling in love during the summer of 1978, listening to Right Down The Line by Gerry Rafferty.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I have always loved romance. Contemporary, historical, paranormal, I love it all. I’ve been reading them since I was 12. That is absolutely why my mind tends to build stories that promise a happily ever after. They are such a wonderful emotional experience.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

The Love Con by Seressia Glass, The Dating Playbook by Farrah Rochon, All The Feels by Olivia Dade, and Electric Idol by Kate Robert.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I really loved writing their first Christmas. I wrote a novella, Decked Out, that follows the main characters of book two (Stripped Down) through a disaster of a first Christmas. It was fun to create parallels and show the origins of family traditions by writing about Jo & Dom’s early holidays. I also loved writing the twist in the “grand gesture” scene. I can’t say too much, but I had my editor pumping her fist in the air shouting "Yes!" Very gratifying!

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I lead the #latenightwritersclub on TikTok, and for every evening of writing sprints, I light saint candles with famous folks on them. We’ve gone through the Schitts Creek crew, Ted Lasso’s entire cast, The Golden Girls, and PBS stars from my childhood. The group even convinced me to make a candle with my face on it so they could order one for their writing spaces! So I’m writing this sitting next to my Saint Eva candle that says, “Good Words Everyone!”

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

There is an awful lot of hard work and compromise that goes into making happily ever after last forever, and it is worth it with the right person.

Interview with Lisa Shay, Author of Undercover Kittens

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Undercover Kittens?

Undercover Kittens is the third in the Pet Communicator Cozy Mystery series, (already well into book 4). Years ago, I told my sister about a book idea I had. A veterinarian who communicates with animals and helps solve crimes. Well, she kept bugging me about writing the book, so I did! Thanks to my sister!

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Undercover Kittens, what would they be?

I listen to KLove so...

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Oh my gosh, a favorite? I read everything. Eclectic I guess!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Six-Minute X-Ray: Rapid Behavior Profiling by Chase Hughes, Fortitude by Dan Crenshaw, Redemption by David Baldacci, Sasquatch by Jeff Meldrum, Pit Perfect Murder by Renee George, And Then There Were Crumbs by Eve Calder.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

No spoiler, but the scene where Oliver gives up a secret!

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I like to have the TV on. Something mindless. It's like white noise for me. Can't write with a radio on, though!

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Always be kind.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Animals have feelings, are funny, compassionate, and are smarter than we think.

Interview with P. L. Tavormina, Author of Seven Strengths

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Seven Strengths: A Tale from Turaset?

With all the difficulties in the world these days, it’s easy to lose sight of how much good surrounds us. We’re all strong in our own ways, and that’s where the title Seven Strengths came from. We each bring something of value to our relationships and communities. I wanted a fantasy/sci-fi story that focused on the strengths of community, family, and friendship. Also, I wanted to tell a coming-of-age story that could lead into my broader series: The Industrial Age, which currently has two full-length novels in it.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Seven Strengths: A Tale from Turaset, what would they be?

Oh, this is a great question because I actually wrote a song for this story! It can be sung to the tune "Sweet Betsy from Pike." Here it is:

Gather round and I’ll tell you of Val and her strengths/A feisty young woman who went to great lengths/To travel alone, independence to guide her/Believing she needed no others beside her. The morning broke bright under skies blue and clear/Val rose and she stretched/A young woman drew near/“May I travel along? For it’s better with two”/Val found contentment in traveling with Sue. CHORUS: They crossed the wide fields; into woods they did roam/Never regretful of leaving their homes/Believing between them they’d surely succeed/They had inner strength, to find what they’d need. Two other wild ones they met in the wood/Val said to Sue, “Wild never looked so good”/They banded together in search of adventure/Their new wildling friends said, “We’re sure glad we met you.” The winds turned a-blustery; the women grew weak/A raging bear lunged upon Sue, and she shrieked/The three other women swung knives at the beast/The storm weren’t so bad with a fire-roasted feast. (CHORUS) Then what happened next, but four wrathful men/Happened upon them in a meadowy glen/Val fought with persistence and so did her friends/The bandits turned tail and were ne’er seen again. Our untiring wand’rers found fullness of heart/’Til the wildlings said time had come to depart/Sue said to Val, “Hold my hand as they’re leaving/Let good times and memories soften our grieving.” (CHORUS) Val swore she’d never abandon dear Sue/Sue said their friendship had proved itself true/Devotion, that tie, the next strength they found/Devotion’s enough for two hearts to be bound. The tale of our wanderers doesn’t end here/They left wood and stream for the wild frontier/Their strengths, ever growing, still carry them through/and finding our own strengths will carry us too.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

This one's a toss up between science fantasy and historical fiction. And yes, absolutely, it's the same as what I enjoy writing!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I need to read The Midnight Library, because I love Matt Haig. But also, I'm catching up on a few Le Guin titles: The Dispossessed and The Tombs of Atuan.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

So, writing scenes with new fantasy creatures was a blast. How bizarre can we make these things? Those were my favorites. But I also enjoyed writing a steamy scene that turns up late in the book. No spoilers about how these two things connect!

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

We're all so quirky, aren't we? When I get blocked, I lie on my stomach, on the bed, and write long-hand. It helps me through the block.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Be the change, man, be the change...

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

We are all in this together! Be strong, believe in yourself, and have fun on this crazy ride!
