Interview with Brenda Trim, Author of Packing Serious Magical Mojo

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Packing Serious Magical Mojo?

I have six sisters and aside from writing books, I work with them to plan and decorate for events like weddings, baby showers, anniversary parties and more for people. Shenanigans are always involved in the events we plan and we are constantly laughing. I had to share the joy they bring to my life with my readers and the idea for the Six Twisted Sisters evolved out of that desire.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Packing Serious Magical Mojo, what would they be?

We Are Family by Sister Sledge.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Anything fantasy and paranormal!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Melinda Chases's Accidentally Magic at Midlife series and The Wolf by JR Ward.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The scene where Phoebe accidentally unlocks the sisters' magic.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I have to have an energy drink next to me (even if I'm not drinking it) and a rerun of one of the classic paranormal shows on in the background.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Dream Big! I believe in always setting your goals high and never quitting.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I want people to remember that the characters never stop fighting or trying to overcome the darkness, whether its's a personal darkness or actual demon.

Interview with Lyz Kelley, Author of Guarded

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Guarded: A small town mature romance?

I believe no one is ordinary, that we are all extraordinary and can be everyday heroes. That hope, empathy, resilience, and optimism (HERO) are at the core of all unlikely heroes. Jack and Tandy, my heroes in Guarded, are perfect partners because, together, they find a way to take that leap of faith and embrace their everyday hero superpower.

Jack is a former Army medic who suffers from survivor’s guilt. The way he deals with memories from the past is by volunteering as an EMT, helping homeless veterans, creating a sense of community in the bar he owns, and compartmentalizing his emotions. By staying busy, he doesn’t have time to think, but that also means he has trouble opening his heart.

Tandy is a helper, but sometimes, lending a helping hand can get a person in trouble, like it has in this book. Tandy gets fired from her job and is uncertain about her future. Returning home, she must face all the reasons she left. The main reason is Jack’s inability to love.

The theme that kept coming up for me is that sometimes being an everyday hero means a person needs to see themselves through a friend's eyes before believing they are worthy of love.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Guarded: A small town mature romance, what would they be?

Tandy: Holding out for a Hero: Bonnie Tyler. Jack: A Soldier’s Memoir: Mitch Rossell.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Because I write everyday hero stories, I love anything small town that has hope, heart, humanity, healing, and heroes at its core. And if there are unique, quirky, make you laugh-out-loud characters—that’s even better.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

That Summer- a small town, friends to lovers romance by Jullian Dodd and Feel Like Love - a brother’s best friend small town romance by Jenna Hartley.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

This may sound weird, but my favorite scenes are always the hardest ones to write and that make me reach for a box of tissues.

In Guarded, my favorite scene is when Jack arrives at Mad Jack’s (his bar) to find a man sitting at a table by himself. Tandy assumes the stranger is a homeless veteran, based on his clothing and actions. She wants to help but doesn’t know how. Jack is able to connect with the man, and this reveals a caring side to Jack that Tandy rarely sees.

According to the experts I talked to, humans like to fix problems in a manner that suites their needs. I wanted to show how Jack provides a homeless veteran suffering from PTSD the help he needs in a manner that’s best for the wounded soldier. It’s a truly heartfelt moment when the soldier realizes he's been heard and is respected by Jack.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I suppose you could say my quirky writing habits stem from my dyslexia. My brain doesn’t work like everyone else’s, so my writing process is different.

First, I transcribe the character conversation playing out in my head, and then I go back to set the scene and action. To write, I work in complete silence with tea sitting to my left and mint M&Ms by my right for when I get stuck and can’t figure out what happens next. And yep, one of my three cats will wander through from time to time to give me some love and a break from the story reel continuously rolling on.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Be an everyday hero, every day.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Guarded has so many layers and complex themes, I don’t think I can predict what each person will take away from the book. For me, the takeaway is wounds are not always visible. Sometimes it takes communication, understanding, and kindness to reveal the source of hurt and find common ground. And even then, love and patience are required. Because, after all, love heals.

Interview with Cameron C. Porter, Author of The Trail of Swords

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Trail of Swords: Book One of the Kimorae Rift Trilogy?

As both a father and a son I've enjoyed close family relationships. I know what strength I've derived from being on both ends of those. I wanted to tell a story that explored the strength and power of a healthy relationship between a father and a son, but that also took place in a world where that strength and power could be brought to bear in more interesting ways. I've been a lover of the fantasy genre my entire life and I wanted the magic, creatures, and other fantasy aspects to be a part of the picture.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Trail of Swords: Book One of the Kimorae Rift Trilogy, what would they be?

I write to classical music and soundtracks, both movie and video game. For Timot, his theme song would be the track "The Streets of Whiterun" from the Skyrim soundtrack. For Ezren, it would be "We Are Legends" from the Humanity - Chapter II album by Thomas Bergersen.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Fantasy, epic fantasy, especially. I also enjoy non-fiction about various topics.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Right now I'm working through re-reading the Wheel of Time series. I'm really interested in what Steven Heumann is doing, though, and have "Paper Heroes" on my shortlist.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I probably had the most fun writing the Battle of the Berg, and I think it shows in the level of detail provided in that event compared to everything else that happens in the book.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I always write while listening to instrumental music, usually movie or videogame soundtracks, but also celtic instrumental and classical music. I also often write with a hoodie on and the hood up with noise-cancelling earbuds because I get distracted easily. A grumpy-faced Link plushie guards my desk from anyone who might dare try to interrupt me while writing.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Work as though you will never get anything you don't bleed for, pray as though you will never get anything God isn't willing to give.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

We are all born in different circumstances, and face different challenges. Some of us grew up so poor that we had to work to keep our family afloat, and some of us grew up in such wealth that we have never felt needed, important, or valuable. Regardless of how we grew up, the strength to take the steps to fulfill our potential can only come from our support system of family and friends, but every person eventually needs to choose to take those steps on their own.

Interview with Alexa H. Michaels, Author of The Lost Sister

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Lost Sister?

This was a bucket list project that finally came to life. My childhood friend and I both share interests in classical literature and modern fiction. We set about to craft our own tale based in the elements of fantasy and romance. Although we live in a land-locked State, we have over 10k lakes, so we adore the water. Summers at the beach really helped us flush out the feel of this adventure.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Lost Sister, what would they be?

So for Meira it would be something like “He’s a Pirate” from Pirates of the Caribbean. She’s crafty and able to slip through sticky situations just like Jack Sparrow. For Rina, the other twin, it would be something like “Heart of Courage” from Two Steps From Hell. Rina has a brave streak that won’t be extinguished, no matter how many people trample her fire. And when she’s allowed to fly, she becomes a force to be reckoned with.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Dark Romance, it can be fantasy or contemporary. I don’t write the truly dark stuff yet, but someday… There is something about a tragic and hopeless situation that brings out the fight in people. Mafia is a good subgenre to really show the despicable character and yet the anti-hero rises from the ashes to win out over the villain.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Some Cora Reilly books, more Sophie Lark books. I want to also tackle all of Caroline Peckham’s works (because she’s the queen of darkness).

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The scene in book one where Meira has to leave her room at the inn in Ely and track down the man in black. Her fear of heights and the mercenary's response were vivid and just sang off the page.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I have to light a candle. Unless I’m in a public setting (writing at a coffee house), I always have a candle burning beside my laptop. It becomes that “It’s time to work” moment to bring my brain into focus. Plus the fire feels alive, and maybe it even whispers secrets to me…

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

“It is double pleasure to deceive the deceiver.” Niccoló Machiavelli

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

That family consists of those who are there for us. Love doesn’t exist because it is supposed to. It has to spark, and that flame must be tended—whether it is between siblings, parents and children, or lovers.
