Interview with J. T. Skye, Author of First Strike: Rebellion Begins

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write First Strike: Rebellion Begins?

I love the sci-fi genre and felt this new series would complement the broader space opera series' already created.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Sci-Fi generally, space opera, and space thriller.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Backyard Starship, Kutherian Gambit, McFadden and Banks, and Assignment in Eternity.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Hmm, that is difficult because I really enjoy writing the characters and the flow of the story. I usually spend the most time making sure I have the last chapter the best it can be, so I have the most fun with that.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Not sure if it's quirky, but I write at 4 am to about 9 am. That's when I'm the most creative.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Three to share. 1) Life is what we make it. 2) There is no status quo - we are either moving forward or falling behind, you choose. 3) People show their true soul in times of terror.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

That they felt happy and content the book took them away for a while. That is my purpose, to craft stories they will enjoy reading and to lift them away.

Interview with M. L. Taylor, Author of Written From Her Heart

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Written From Her Heart?

Written From Her Heart is book #6 in The Heart Series, but can be read as a stand alone book. The story is about triumph in finding love when everything else in the main characters world seems bleak.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Written From Her Heart, what would they be?

Uninvited by Alanis Morissette.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Yes, I like to read all types of Romance!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

A Beautiful Terrible Thing by Jen Waite.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The scene where Alexandria can't fight her attraction for Nik anymore and she finally caves to his will.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Honesty is always the best policy. TRULY

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Even though each of my books can be read as a stand alone novel, if they started from book one, you get a glimpse into the characters in each consecutive book. There are five prior books in The Heart Series prior to Written From Her Heart.

Interview with Avanti Centrae, Author of The Doomsday Medallion

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Doomsday Medallion (A VanOps Thriller Book 3)?

After penning the first two books in the VanOps series, The Lost Power and Solstice Shadows, I wanted to tell a different tale, one that probed the origin of the deep-seated conflict between Maddy Marshall and her twin brother, Will Argones. A newly minted VanOps officer, Marshall is a tall, emerald-eyed truth seeker with special martial arts abilities. Her long-legged brother is a skeptic, an engineer by training, and uses his cynical nature to poke holes in black ops mission planning.

Before this novel, all we knew was that the six-year-old twins were emotionally wounded when their mom died in an icy accident. I wanted to rip off that scab by delving into their mother’s backstory. Was Mom’s death really an accident?

I also wanted to delve into the history of VanOps, which is not your typical black ops organization. It was created to be a deeper shade of black, to rise like a phoenix from the ashes of the CIA’s failed parapsychology missions from the 70’s, back when ‘the company’ was trying to weaponize out-of-body experiences to compete against the Russians. Those ideas were bouncing around in my head like pinballs when I hit upon the jackpot idea of using Nostradamus to pull it all together.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Doomsday Medallion (A VanOps Thriller Book 3), what would they be?

Ooh, fun question. Main characters… don’t have a theme song in mind for them. But my publicist put together a video trailer of the book and it has an awesome soundtrack that reminds me of Mission Impossible.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Yes, I love to read thrillers with a historical or scientific bent. James Rollins, Steve Berry, Andy McDermott, Ernest Dempsey, JF Penn sort of thrillers. I also enjoy really well-penned domestic thrillers, like Gregg Hurwitz’s Orphan X series or K.J. Howe’s Thea Paris thrillers. Sometimes I’ll read fantasy, too, and am a huge Robert Jordan fan. The new Wheel of Time series is off the charts!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I have an advance review copy of Rob Samborn’s latest thriller, Painter of Paradise, a follow-up to his delightful and fantastical Prisoner of Paradise. Also on the TBR list is Divided States by Rick Treon, and I’m currently listening to an advance copy of The Chase by Candace Fox. Echoes of Atlantis by David S. Brody is on there, along with Unthinkable by Brad Parks, and The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell by Robert Dugoni. Top of the list is Kingdom of Bones by James Rollins and Steve Berry’s latest, The Omega Factor.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

In this novel, The Doomsday Medallion, there’s a crazy long action scene, which takes place over several locations in old Marseille: the stacks of a library, picturesque French streets, the harbor filled with yachts, a storm-tossed Mediterranean Sea. It takes place on foot, in cars, and on jet skis.

I think the length of it works because by that point in the novel, we’re invested in the characters. Besides Maddy Marshall, Will Argones, and her lover, Bear Thorenson, we get to know Avril. She’s a sixteen-year-old who uses a gecko as an avatar to make TikTok video predictions because her face and neck are mutilated by a horrific burn scar. The primary antagonist, Henri Seymore, also known as The Watcher, has been wanting to kidnap Avril for years. When she accurately predicts the Chinese invasion of one of Taiwan’s outlying islands, he finally gets his chance, and in this long action scene he and his henchmen rain bullets down on the heroes as they attempt to escape.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

My most unusual quirk is that I don’t like to do the creative aspect of writing in front of a computer. I prefer the couch, the lounge chair, the striped hanging chair under the pecan tree in the back yard, or better yet, the hiking trail. For some reason, my muse lives mostly outdoors.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

There are a lot of those that help me in life, and they often find their way into my novels in a subtle way. Here’s the epigraph from this thriller: “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.” —The Art of War, Sun Tzu

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I would like them to remember the rush of excitement and keen sizzle of suspense that kept them turning pages and wanting “just one more chapter.” As with all great novels, I’d hope they’d share their experience with a friend. There is a memorable twist to the story, but I’d hate to spoil the surprise!

Interview with Daniel Sherrier, Author of The Silver Stranger

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Silver Stranger?

I reread the first appearance of Spider-Man from 1962 and noticed how it reads almost like a supervillain origin story until the twist at the end. That got me thinking about how some superheroes are not inevitable—once they gain their powers, they could easily go either way.

Everyone has the potential for both good and evil within. It’s easy to point the finger at other people when they do wrong. But confronting our own potential to do wrong seems much more difficult and therefore, much more interesting in a story. And it’s a more interesting way to explore what superheroes are all about.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Silver Stranger, what would they be?

The title character’s theme song would be almost too obvious: “The Stranger” by Billy Joel.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I enjoy many genres, pretty much anything other than pure romance or gory horror. But I frequently keep returning to historical nonfiction and biographies. History is important for everyone, and writers in particular can learn a lot about characterization and human nature by studying what people have done throughout history.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I’m currently reading “The Romanov Sisters” by Helen Rappaport (nonfiction). I just picked up “I Am Legend” by Richard Matheson, which I’ve been looking forward to after having read some of his novels and short stories last year. I also grabbed a couple of Doctor Who novels just for fun, and for a more serious read, Fyodor Dostoevsky’s “The Idiot.” And I’d like to reread some of the history books I’ve read in recent years to help bolster my retention.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I was a theatre major in college and did a lot of playwriting. One scene toward the end of this book wound up feeling like the best of both worlds in terms of playwriting and novel writing. It’s too late in the story for me to go into much detail here, but it’s a tense conversation over brunch in which some things that have been simmering below the surface finally boil over, with telepathy adding an extra dimension to everything.

Grounded scenes like this can help balance out other scenes where I, for example, send a couple of characters plunging into an upside-down world, dominated by talking monkeys (which was also fun to write).

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I’ve flip-flopped quite a bit on being a morning writer and an evening writer as I’ve tried to figure out what my optimal writing time is. There is no perfect time, and yet I keep trying to find one.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

“It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.” The internet attributes this quote to Aristotle. I don’t know whether that’s accurate. Either way, the sentiment is correct, and being able to get into the heads of people who think differently is important for any writer (and everyone else, for that matter).

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Hopefully that they had a great time reading it.
