Interview with Gurpreet Kaur Sidhu, Author of Shadow

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Shadow: Run, but you can't hide?

Shadow is the second book in The Storm Series. I ended the first book, Storm, with a lot of unanswered questions and I know this annoys some people, but I like leaving readers with a cliffhanger. I’ve always been curious about past lives and reincarnation, along with what the government doesn’t publicly disclose to its citizens. I took all of those aspects and incorporated them into the story where the main character has the ability to remember his past life.

Even though some people would recognize being able to recall a past life as a gift, the main character most certainly doesn’t see it that way. We get a glimpse of some of the characters’ past lives and who they were and what they were like. Then there’s The SEA (The Secret Eye Agency) which is operated on the basis of helping people for the greater good, but somewhere down the line, the mission statement no longer aligned with the actions of the agents. Essentially what was supposed to help people has become an agency feeding off of power.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Shadow: Run, but you can't hide, what would they be?

Even though the book maintains a dark atmosphere, I would say the “Friends” theme song would perfectly fit the main characters.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love reading romance novels and it’s not the same genre I write in. What’s even more bizarre is that I don’t read thrillers or watch movies in that genre, yet I am able to write in that genre with a breeze.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

The Power of your Subconscious Mind, The Wish, and The Power of Awareness.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I would say the very last scene where all the characters are leaving Paradise Way. I can’t say much, but I bring back a character and… All I’ll say is that the readers are left with a lot of additional questions.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Unfortunately, I don’t.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Listen to your intuition. It will always lead you to the path you’re supposed to be on. It truly knows the way!

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

It would be to cherish your time and your loved ones. We all know anything can change in a split second. We see it happen in our every day lives, but I don’t think we actually live our every day-to-day life as if it would be our last. We oftentimes hold on to meaningless arguments or grudges that don’t serve a purpose in the grand scheme of things. By doing this, we only rob ourselves of peace and happiness. Life is too short to not be happy.

Interview with Wes Dyson, Author of Myracles in the Void

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Myracles in the Void?

I was going through a period of crippling anxiety, thinking I’d gone insane, and entirely isolated. I truly thought it was the end. And I was 23. But something deep down said I could unravel what was causing this. I had to. Over many years, I began to understand that starting very young I let every little failure define who I was, until nothing was possible, not even self-control. I’d conditioned myself for failure. Long story super-short, I wrote a book that metaphorizes what I learned.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Myracles in the Void, what would they be?

Maybe the "Bob the Builder" theme song?

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Fantasy and Sci-Fi!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Next is "The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue" by V.E. Schwab.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I really enjoyed the more comedic scenes, especially between Gai and Kabbage.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Well, sometimes I can't find matching socks (actually, most of the time), and I have a superstition that that means its going to be an extra creative day, me and my different colored feet.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Just keep going.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Being defined by a “destructive” moment from our past is something I think most people unfortunately carry. Myself included. A lot of times they occur when we’re young, which can make it seem like a built-in feature as we grow into it.

First and foremost, this story should be a fun adventure, with dazzling scenes, humor, and novelty abound. But if someone walks away feeling like they might be able to follow in Lynd’s footsteps, and realize trauma doesn’t define them, I’d humbly feel like my own trying journey to that conclusion has been worth it.

Interview with Peter A. Hubbard, Author of The Tears of Blood

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Tears of Blood - Book #1 of The Tears of Blood Trilogy?

An article I saw online about one child under 10 dying in a refugee camp every 8 minutes; Then I looked out my window and asked the question "How can I change the beliefs of everyone out there and make a difference?"

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Tears of Blood - Book #1 of The Tears of Blood Trilogy, what would they be?

We Will Rock You!

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Action / Adventure / Crime thrillers.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Nora Roberts and JB Robb.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Where Amira is taken into the Intelligence service, and forgiven her past.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Blue Pyramid paperweight; Cocktail glass full go Buddy beads, and colorful stones.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Ask the next question - From Theodore Sturgeon, a 1980's brilliant writer.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

"One child under the age of 10 is dying every 8 minutes in a refugee camp somewhere."

Interview with Jim Diggins, Author of Anubis: The Weigher of Souls

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Anubis: The Weigher of Souls?

While we were watching a dog twitch and whimper while dreaming, a friend remarked that finding out what dogs dream about would make a great book. So I ran with the idea. Someone had to!

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Anubis: The Weigher of Souls, what would they be?

For Isaac: “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” (by Nina Simone, recorded most notably by The Animals).

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I like anything with a fast pace and a clever twist, especially books with a paranormal or supernatural motif. I adore Tolkien. But I also appreciate serious literature. I work in the field of non-fiction books every day so it is nice to escape into other worlds.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I would like to read more Garcia Marquez, Kafka, Eco… there is a treasure trove of 20th Century literature that I have only scratched the surface of.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The dream scenes were fun to write. Some of them are based very closely on actual dreams I have had. It is such a challenge to realistically portray dreams in printed word or on film; nobody truly does it justice.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

John Grisham once said “write at least one page every day” even if you just aren’t into it. It’s not exactly quirky or a habit, but it is great advice for actually finishing that book you want to write but keep putting off.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Take the red pill.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

This book is not anti-religion or anti-science. It is anti-dogma. But pro-dog!

Interview with S. Kirk Pierzchala, Author of Solitude Of Light

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Solitude Of Light (Beyond Cascadia Book Three)?

The story behind the story of “Solitude Of Light” is that, as I was developing the "Beyond Cascadia" speculative fiction series, I uncovered darker aspects of the relationship between the brothers, Tomás and Francisco Chen. I saw there needed to be a final confrontation between both of them, but because they are such unusual personalities, it went in unexpected ways. Because of the focus on these characters, “Solitude Of Light” was written as a stand-alone story that can be thoroughly enjoyed even if a reader hasn’t read the first two novels.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Solitude Of Light (Beyond Cascadia Book Three), what would they be?

I love this question, as I have composed lengthy playlists for most of my characters and appreciate how certain lyrics really help me catch aspects of their personalities. I think the songs that capture Tomás’ inner anguish the best are the classic “Everything I Own” by Bread, and “I Will Follow You Into The Dark”, by Death Cab For Cutie. For Francisco, “Cold Little Heart”, by Michael Kiwanuka and “Winter” from Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, really describe what’s happening inside him.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

My reading tastes are very eclectic, so I don’t stay in one genre. Even though I technically write Science Fiction, my themes and goals are inspired by more mainstream literature. I enjoy classics like Tolkien, Mervyn Peake, Dostoyevsky, Flannery O’Connor and Evelyn Waugh. Two authors that I love, and who write very differently than myself, are Diana Wynne Jones and P.G. Wodehouse.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

My TBR list is getting pretty long, but two books I hope to get to soon are “Star of the Unborn” by Franz Werfel and “A Confederacy of Dunces” by John Kennedy Toole.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Very tough to choose, as there are many scenes in this story that are emotionally gripping and moving. But one that is very special to me is where Tomás spends a few minutes saying goodbye to his little daughter, knowing he’ll never see her again.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I do, in fact have a preferred coffee cup (coincidentally, the biggest in the cabinet). But I’d say my quirkiest writing habit is that, at about half-way through creating a novel, I find I have to tape a bunch of graph paper together and make detailed sheets of what’s happening in each chapter, color-coded for characters and emotional beats, etc. Seeing everything charted out like this helps me envision the path towards finishing the work. These documents are similar to plot boards, but can be folded or rolled up, like ancient scrolls bursting with lost wisdom.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

The older I get, the more I value this advice attributed to Carl Jung: “Know all the theories. Master all the techniques. But as you touch a human soul, be just another human soul.”

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I think the most important theme in “Solitude Of Light" is that love isn’t comfortable or easy. It is actually the hardest thing we are called to do, and if we answer that call, love will take everything we have to give—and then it’s going to demand even more.

Interview with Donna Lattanzio, Author of An Accident Waiting to Happen

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write An Accident Waiting to Happen?

A very long time ago, I heard a conversation about an air traffic controller who had inadvertently caused a plane to crash. How the person never fully recovered from the reality of what they had done; how their life was altered forever. I thought, how horrible it must have been for the air traffic controller and it was this unfortunate event which created the book's main character; her need to change her identity, to flee, and to create a new life for herself.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of An Accident Waiting to Happen, what would they be?

These Boots Are Made For Walking by Nancy Sinatra.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

My go-to genres are psychological thrillers and historical fiction; genres at opposite ends of the reading spectrum! However, writing psychological thrillers is my favorite. I find it immensely satisfying to explore a character's psychological quirks.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

The Maiden by Alex Michaelides, Paper Bullets by Jeffrey H. Jackson, and Carnegies Maid by Marie Benedict.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The ending for sure! It was not the first draft's original ending because it was too neat and tidy and life is never neat and tidy.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Having the TV on as background noise works for me. Usually I have it tuned to an inane channel like horse racing. I tried having music on as background noise, but I wound up singing along which was a huge distraction.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Be kind to everyone you meet. Do good deeds. Love your family, respect your friends and always, always be true to yourself.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

There are times in life when factors are not as they appear. Many of us have made mistakes, both big and small. Sometimes they happen with minor consequence, sometimes with devastating repercussions. The reality is, we are all human and we are all fragile.

Interview with Gayle Siebert, Author of The Bones Below

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Bones Below?

It's the continuing story of Lindy Larsen. The first book in the series, Silver Buckles, began as a short story I wrote back in the Seventies when I lived in Alberta and attended lots of small town rodeos. No computers then, so decades later I entered all my stories into my computer manually. Silver Buckles and a couple of others took on lives of their own. Silver Buckles spawned After The Dance, Katawasis Girls, and now The Bones Below. Each can work as a stand alone story. Protagonist Lindy Larsen is still talking to me so her story will continue.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Bones Below, what would they be?

Lindy: Both Sides Now. K.C.: Desperado

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Thrillers and murder mysteries are my favorite to read. Silver Buckles isn't either of those, but when I started writing After The Dance, it went in that direction. Looks like that's about all I write now.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I'm reading Kevin Partner's Nightfall series, The Joining by Frank Talaber, Wired Hard by Toby Neal, and Surprise, Surprise! by Mike Faricy.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

K.C. and Lindy in bed, with K.C. telling Lindy how he thinks her grandmother's pendant could have wound up on one of the murder victims.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Don't think so. I just make it a point to write every day.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

“Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.” –Goethe

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

That the characters are relatable.
