Interview with Isaac Petrov, Author of Advent of Dreamtech

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Advent of Dreamtech?

Ah, when I was a kid, I remember thinking up this story about this very lonely boy that lived with his abusive uncle, bullied by the world. He learned to use dreams to escape his hellish existence. And then learned to "share dream" to get his revenge. A kid story, thought up by a kid. That old story has always been there in the back of my mind, and when I decided to write a novel (a trilogy, no less!), it was my main inspiration. The book turned out to be very different, but that old story was its seed.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Advent of Dreamtech, what would they be?

Oh, I'm sure Edda would love Guns 'n Roses and the sort... In their future time they didn't have their own culture, so they were very much exposed to the surviving culture of the "golden age" (i.e. ours).

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Science Fiction. Is there anything else?

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I still have some scifi classics to read, like Starship Troopers, but I think my next book is a scifi far-future saga by M.C.Cooper, which also features strong female characters, like my stories.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The darkest one of all. A scene from book 2, actually. It was very risky, but my readers totally loved it. Sorry, won't spoil it here.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Nope. I'm a pretty normal dude - if you'd see me working, you wouldn't know if I'm fixing software bugs (my day job), or writing.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Live and let live.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Truth matters. A lot.

Interview with Rory Surtain, Author of Psyker

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Psyker?

I’ve always been a fan of the dystopian, futuristic Black Library novels but wanted to do my own thing. Instead of focusing on the heroes and legends of that science fantasy universe, I went after an unknown, picking one life out of trillions and building an edgy, relatable story from the ground up.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Psyker, what would they be?

Fun question. Between chapters, I’ve been known to create monumental indie rock playlists on Spotify building the emotional tone for each book. Paric Kilhaven, the MC and narrator of Psyker, evolves and thus a theme song varies for each book. For Psyker, Hanging by a Thread by Des Rocs. For Psykana, the sequel, a great theme song would be Save Me (I’m Not Crazy) by Electric Enemy.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I normally read urban fantasy and historical fiction. So far, I’ve been writing dystopian epic fantasy and science fantasy with a darker bent. Not grimdark, but not Harry Potter. The MC doesn’t back down from the challenges—often with a steep price—and grows as a result.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

A Time for Witches by Craig Schaefer, Smoke Bitten by Patricia Briggs, and yes, I’m falling way behind.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

My books always have a bit of mystery, and my favorites scenes always have an element of surprise. To describe one here would be a spoiler.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I never use the letter J.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Forgive the world.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

The next book will be even better.

Interview with Tracie Breaux, Author of Refined

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Refined?

When I was in my 40's, I noticed on social media different stories about child abuse. I suppose I never thought about my past because there was no internet or social media before to compare my past to. I realized that my father had gotten away with crimes against me, so I began researching similar abuses, which led me to have a DNA test done.

Once I received the results and met family members I hadn't known existed, I discovered that these abuses had been handed down through generations. It is called generational trauma. This floored me. I realized I had a unique story that needed to be shared, but trauma is not unique. My story began to unfold from there...

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Refined, what would they be?

The main character in my book is me. I listen to Fight Song by Rachel Platten on a regular basis. It keeps me going.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

My favorite genre is memoir and I loved writing my story. I'm working on a historical fiction piece now, which I love also, and it is much more difficult than I thought. Lots of research into an era I'm not familiar with.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

The Keeper of Happy Endings and We Were the Lucky Ones.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Any scenes with my brother in them. I miss that we were close once.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I write best when my dog is at my side, but he gets distracted by anyone in the kitchen.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Yes, and it's in my book. It's a Latin phrase: Dum vita est spes est. It means, "where there's life, there's hope."

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I want my readers to walk away knowing that they can overcome anything and to stay strong.

Interview with Dave Klapwyk, Author of Search Engine

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Search Engine - Black Flag Brigade Origins?

After completing the Black Flag surviving trilogy, I wanted some of the younger, minor characters from that series to break out on their own.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Search Engine - Black Flag Brigade Origins, what would they be?

I'm Invincible by Sia.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic fiction is my favourite genre to read and write.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

My favourite scene in my book is the final fight scene.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

When I need inspiration for my next chapter, I walk. Sometimes I'll walk around town aimlessly for an hour while I formulate my ideas.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Keep read and writing.

Interview with Theophilus Monroe, Author of Voodoo and Vampires

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Voodoo and Vampires?

Hailey was a favorite character in a previous story I wrote. She was so popular as a witch turned vampire that my readers asked if I'd write her story, too! As a young vampire, she's looking for love and, perhaps, a bite or two to satiate her growing urges. Now, she has to choose between the allure of an ancient vampire king and a shifter and old high school crush.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Voodoo and Vampires, what would they be?

"Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)" by Kelly Clarkson. After all, getting turned into a vampire didn't kill her (exactly) and now she has the ability as a witch to tap into a kind of magic that other witches wouldn't dare touch.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I'll read anything in the fantasy genre--urban, epic, progression, LitRPG. I write mostly urban fantasy but I like to add a touch of romance to it. I also write some epic/high fantasy.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Brandon Sanderson's latest installment from the Stormlight Archive is sitting on my shelf waiting for me right now!

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I included several flashbacks of Hailey's earlier life in the first part of the book that really helped build her backstory. I especially enjoyed the scene where she completed her first spell and became a witch for the first time, unwittingly cursing a few of her friends in the process.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Recently I've been sitting outside on my deck in the morning to write while the sun rises. I've found that the outdoors can give me an extra creative spark.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference! - The Serenity Prayer

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

No matter what happens to you, even if you're betrayed by those you trust, stay true to yourself and if you are pure of heart you'll find your way through it and overcome whatever challenges you face.
