A Journey That Led Me To Where I Am Today by Aleatha Romig

Prior to 2008, my home was filled with people, noise, and love. My husband, our three children, and countless friends of theirs would show up for dinner or to spend the night. Our house was bustling. In 2008 our oldest son left for college—Purdue University. In 2008 my husband was laid off from his job selling lumber and began a third-shift job at a local box store. In 2009 our daughter left for college—Hanover College.

My once busy life dwindled down to lonely and quiet nights, after getting home from work and putting our youngest son to bed.

I had an idea for a story. I honestly didn’t know where it would go and assumed that no one other than my mother would probably read it. My original manuscript was titled Claire’s Story.

In 2011 I finished Claire's Story. It became CONSEQUENCES. I queried agents. I sent manuscripts. Most attempts at traditional publishing were not even acknowledged. One night I clicked a button: “have you written a book?”

While I don’t recommend vanity publishing, that button click was what took Claire’s Story to the world. A year later, I received my rights back, self-published, and released book two, TRUTH. Another year later, book three, CONVICTED, was well received, landing on New York Times and USA Today's bestselling lists.

Claire’s Story was now on over half a million e-readers.

I truly was at the right place and time in the self-publishing journey. Since that time, I have traditionally published one story. I also employ editors, one truly amazing one, cover artists, photographers, and formatters. From late-night writing Claire’s Story to a full-time author, I couldn’t be happier with not only my journey, but also that of my husband, who now works with me full-time.

The places and countries we’ve journeyed and the people we’ve met along this crazy road have only added color and flavor to our lives. Now with over fifty-five titles penned, I know that even with embarking on this journey later in life, this is where we want to be.

Interview with Olivia Sinclair, Author of Acceptable Limits

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Acceptable Limits?

I was positive I would never write a rock star romance because it felt too far out of my personal experience. That’s why in an earlier book I made a secondary character a rock star and named him Todd (a name you won’t find on any of the sexy male character lists–until now!) I thought that was the end of our brief acquaintance, although even then he had charisma.

Then I watched an interview with an aging musician who talked about the creative process and I realized I knew everything I needed to know about my particular rock star. He has the money and the fame, but he’s a musician for the sheer joy of creating. It’s an inner driven need that only his love for Lilah can compete with. I can’t imagine him being anything else and I absolutely adore him!

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I’m completely addicted to that sweet sense of satisfaction that comes with a well-crafted HEA and I will read any genre that offers that. (Romance is a pretty natural fit!) I want to share that same feeling with my readers, so yes, I love writing romance.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I’ve been tidying up my ebook collection and finding treasures I’d forgotten I had! That’s my TBR list at the moment and it’s embarrassing long…

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The steamy basement office scene, definitely!

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I read every book aloud while walking in my driveway as my final editing pass before anyone else sees it. (My neighbors must think I’m crazy!)

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

“The real world is right outside my door.” I don’t feel the need to be that realistic in my books; I’d rather write about the what-if’s!

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Be yourself–it’s always, always worth it! Even when it doesn’t seem like it.

Interview with Sharon Ward, Author of Dark Tide

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Dark Tide?

I've been a scuba diver for about 30 years, and I wanted people who don't dive to get a chance to see how amazing it is. And I love writing mysteries. Tada! The Fin Fleming Sea Adventure series was born.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Dark Tide, what would they be?

Pretty much anything by Jimmy Buffet.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love reading mysteries, but I read a lot of SciFi and YA too.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

C. Michele Dorsey's Salt Water Wounds, Andrew Mayne's Sea Storm, Nick Sullivan's Deep Devil, Elly Griffiths The Locked Room, Gregg Hurwitz Don't Look Back, and Spencer Quinn's Short Tails, among about a thousand others.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

When Fin goes diving with Chaun and he chases the manta rays and she has to rescue him because he gets nitrogen narcosis.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

My dog Molly usually sleeps on my feet, which is cozy and warm. Also, I keep a spreadsheet with a pie chart of my progress on each book. Whenever I get stuck, I have to update the spreadsheet so the pie chart advances. It helps me see how far I've come and so I know I can do this.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I pretty much live by the golden rule. I try not to hurt anyone or anything if I can help it.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

The ocean is a fragile and beautiful place, and our lives--and the lives of thousands of amazing creatures--depend on it.

Interview with Vincent Howard, Author of Crossroad

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Crossroad: The Long Way Home?

This is a book about choices. It is our choices more than anything else that determines our destiny. Talent plays a part and so does luck & opportunity but I believe the primary factor is our choices.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Crossroad: The Long Way Home, what would they be?

My main character is good natured but flawed in many aspects; "Aint No Stoppin Us Now" by McFadden and Whitehead. or "Man in the Mirror" by Michael Jackson.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Historical fiction is probably my favorite but reading is like music to me... I like a variety of genres but my taste in that moment depends on my mood.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

What a great question - I enjoyed writing each chapter for different reasons. I think my LEAST favorite scene was the chapter detailing the character's military journey. Since I was in the military so long, it had a "been there, done that" feel to it so it was not as much of a stretch to write

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I have a number actually, many are reflected or symbolized by my tattoos. One is "Simba si baada sungura kidogo" which is Swahili for "Lions don't chase bunny rabbits"; it is a reminder to focus on what's important. My most recent tattoo was Psalm 118:24 - a reminder to rejoice and hunt for the goodness in every day.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

That we're always one decision away from a totally different life!

Interview with Ava Harrison, Author of Here Lies North

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Here Lies North?

When I was scrolling through Instagram I saw a house that was made of mirrors. The moment I saw the picture, the whole story popped into my head. I have always wanted to write a thriller and this seemed like the perfect story to dip my feet in the romantic thriller genre.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love historical romances, Fantasy romances, and bully romances. I try not to write in the genre I read.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Gilded by Raven Kennedy. How To Be A Wallflower by Eloisa James.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The WTF scene (The big plot twist) I can't say the scene or it would be a spoiler. HA!

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I write with my two small dogs cuddling with me.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Love your flaws.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

The truth is never what it seems.
