Interview with Valerie Nifora, Author of The Fairmounts

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Fairmounts?

Full disclosure it was a dream I had. I dreamt the entire story and when I woke up in the morning, I thought, Oh! I have to write that down before I forget it. So, I opened my laptop, and I could hear my main character’s voice, Harry, just flowing through my fingertips onto the page. That’s how it all started.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Fairmounts, what would they be?

Oh, I like that question. That makes me think a little bit. So, for John Fairmount, I would say: The Phantoms - Watch Me. For Lois Fairmount: The Police - Every Little Think She Does Is Magic. For Harry LaCroix: DJ Snake ft. Justin Bieber - Let Me Love You. For Mary Whitcombe: Adele – Someone Like You.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Well, I don’t really read all that much. I know, how strange, a writer who never reads! I’m just being honest.

I tend to re-read the things I like. So, Hawthorne’s short stories, Twice-Told Tales or The Blithdale Romance. I like Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca and My Cousin Rachel. I’ve read Peter S. Beagle’s The Last Unicorn countless times. And of course, The Fairmounts I’ve read at least thirty times so far and I love it each time, that last chapter always gets me.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

None. I’m writing the sequel to The Fairmounts and I don’t want to be distracted by another story or another writing style. So, right now, I’m spending time with my characters and letting them tell me their story.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I have two actually. The first is when Mary runs off into the woods surrounding Huntington House and Harry runs after her. In his pursuit, he tackles her to the ground to get her to stop running and he tells her to look up at the way the trees are so tall they’re forming an arch and it’s blocking out the sun. And, he tells her that whatever she’s running from, whatever darkness she’s trying to escape through, is only blocking the sun. And in life we can’t go hide in the darkness, because it will always prevent us from seeing the beauty of the light. There’s more that happens obviously, but I love that scene and that image and what it represents.

The second is a wonderful fight scene between Harry and John Fairmount, and I’m going to leave that one alone so when you get to it, you can enjoy it.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I suppose my only quirky writing habit is that I write when the muse strikes and when I can write. Mostly on Saturday mornings when everyone in the house is sleeping and I can get a few hours of quiet to myself. I think Moms can relate to that one.

I’m also a massive tea drinker. So, it’s black tea, milk, sugar, quiet, and my computer.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Yes. Life is beautiful. People make it ugly. So, don't make it ugly.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I hope that they remember you can create something good out of broken pieces.

Interview with T.L. Bequette, Author of Blood Perfect

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Blood Perfect: A Joe Turner Mystery?

I'm a criminal defense attorney. So, write what you know, I suppose.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Blood Perfect: A Joe Turner Mystery, what would they be?

"Right Now" by Van Halen. Joe Turner, the protagonist, in the end, has to step up and make a play.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Yes, I like mysteries. And I believe the more you read them, the better you can write them.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Louise Penny Latest, "A World of Curiosities" and a few by Lisa Jewel. Her books inspire some of my more off-kilter characters

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I like the very last scene. I enjoy attempting to evoke emotions from the reader. I hope I was successful.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Not really. I'm constantly amazed about how much I never tire of writing. I've heard some writers say they have to be in a certain mood. Not I. If I have time, I'm writing.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Nothing in the world is more powerful than a good story. - Tyrion Lannister

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I'll steal from the late Maya Angelou. People will not remember you by the words you say, or the deeds you do. People will remember you by the way you made them feel. So, I'd like their experience with the book to make them feel something. Anything.

Interview with Stella Atrium, Author of Seven Beyond

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Seven Beyond?

As a young person, I wondered how a career would shape if a person had enough time to master any discipline. And why not more than one discipline like music or finance or architecture? How would a person’s outlook change? What choices would be delayed or discounted?

Leonardo de Vinci, for example, mastered and pioneered several disciplines, but he had no private life and worked for hire making weapons for this lord or that one, just to buy more marble. Of course, for women the demand or child-bearing years dictate many choices, but what if she could space out pregnancies over centuries? How would her experiences and career and life choices be impacted?

When my father began to age, additional questions piled onto the snarl. How to face daily life when friends are gone, or a homeland is lost, or your memory is faulty? What reasons to take up the daily tasks and keep going? All these concerns were pressed into the plotline of Seven Beyond.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I’ve been reading for many decades, so I had trends where I read mostly biography or mostly philosophy. In the 2000s I was enamored with books about the Ottoman Empire; I sort of fell down the rabbit hole.

I read in fantasy after I discovered Robin Hobb. The books based on old fairy tales were a favorite, or tales from Eastern European Jewish tradition.

I started reading deeply in science fiction when I was writing in that mode, but shied away from the grimdark subgenre where all the plots were the same and interest was driven by the gore or unusual creatures. That trend ran out for me rather quickly.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Right now I’m reading books from India, especially survival strategies for women in a layered society, where status is about what you are rather than gained through merit. The Henna Artist by Alka Joshi is open on my reader right now.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

In Seven Beyond I loved working with the traveling group who are on a journey of discovery. Lady Drasher leads them through her wealth and social contacts. She is cynical like me and brooks no dissent to her methods. She tells stories during the idle times that are based on literature with a wicked twist of her own, like she was there.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

The needed elements to write are to get up early, put on a pot of coffee, and turn on the computer. At two in the afternoon I look up because my stomach is growling. LOL

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Never let ‘em see you sweat.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Our lives benefit from the lives of people who came before us: family, friends, heroes, philosophers, leaders, enemies. We should learn a little something about them.

Interview with Maggie Carpenter, Author of Malibu Heat

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Malibu Heat?

I lived in Malibu and worked in the entertainment industry, both in front of and behind the camera. Though Malibu Heat is a work of fiction, certain characters and situations were inspired by some of what I saw and heard. I have enough eye-popping memories to write half a dozen Malibu Heat books, and at least two more will follow. The Director’s Daughter will be next, then Acting Up.

I loved my time in Tinsel Town, but the business and the environment have changed a great deal since I was there. Writing Malibu Heat I was able to relive those amazing days, and it was a blast! I’m sure the same will be true of The Director’s Daughter and Acting Up.

I know this is a cliche, but I hope you enjoy Malibu Heat as much as I enjoyed writing it. It really was a labor of love.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Any genre of romantic suspense.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

None. I'm too busy writing to read.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Tony, the sexy tennis pro, lives next door to an Oscar winning actor whose daughter is impossible. When Tony takes her in hand—that was fun!

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

YES. I must start with a cup of tea, and I always have a second and third.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Never give up.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

There really are HEA's.
