Interview with Jordan Spicer, Author of Tales of Reverba: A New Ripple

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Tales of Reverba: A New Ripple?

Back in college, when I went through a serious depression and one of the few things I enjoyed was writing or creating fantasy worlds. I've always enjoyed doing it but during this time it was one of my few joys. This inspired me to flush out the world a bit more and write Tales of Reverba: A New Ember which is the first book of this series, and naturally, I followed it up with the second book Tales of Reverba: A New Ripple. I also wanted to show other viewpoints that New Ember couldn't touch on, which allowed me to breathe more life into the world.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Tales of Reverba: A New Ripple, what would they be?

You are a pirate - Lazy Town.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Fantasy and yes it is!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

G.R.R Martin - Fire and Blood, and Lisa Jackson - Running Scared.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

When the prisoners managed to secure the ship.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Listening to music while sometimes slipping into a daydream about the scene I'm writing. Sometimes I even act out a scene just to make sure it "feels" right.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Just be a good person.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Follow your dreams but don't be blinded by them.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Tethered To Him, what would they be?

Would you wait for me by Brett Young

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Billionaire or mafia romance. It's the same as what I write.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

The perfects by Rachel Van Dyken is at the top of my list.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The ending. You'll know when you get to it.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Not really, Unless waking up at four am every morning is a quirky habit?

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Anything is possible with a mimosa and lipstick!

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

That love at first sight is real. That soul consuming love exists and when you know, you just know.

Interview with Linnea Tanner, Author of Skull's Vengeance

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Skull's Vengeance?

The legacy of warrior queens in ancient Britain and in Irish mythology inspired the primary protagonist, Catrin, in the Curse of Clansmen and Kings series. I was fascinated with the historical account of Boudicca, a Celtic warrior queen who united the Britons in a rebellion against the Romans in AD 61 and almost expelled them. Roman historians describe her as a powerful druidess who sacrificed some of her victims to the war goddess, Andraste.

I was also fascinated with the legacy of Marcus Antonius (Mark Antony) who was known for his tragic love story with Cleopatra and their subsequent downfall. Mark Antony’s son, Iullus from another marriage, rose politically in the imperial court of Augustus Caesar. Tragically, Iullus was forced to fall on his sword after being accused of treason for having an affair with the emperor’s only daughter, Julia. Iullus’s son, Lucius Antonius, voluntarily exiled in Gaul (modern-day France) to avoid the same fate.

Very little is known about Lucius Antonius. Some historians surmise that he might have been the father or grandfather of the famous Roman general, Marcus Antonius Primus. The tragic legacy of Mark Antony and his descendants inspired me to create Marcellus, the son of Lucius Antonius. One of the burning questions I wanted to answer is how Lucius would react if his son fell in love with a powerful foreign queen in Britannia and went down the same tragic pathway as his forefathers.

One of the fantastical elements in "Skull’s Vengeance" is inspired by the Celtic belief that the soul resides in the head. The druids considered the human head to be the temple of the soul. As with so many aspects of the Celtic warrior’s life, taking an opponent’s head in battle, preferably in single combat, had a mystical significance. To possess the enemy’s head was to possess his soul. The concept that magical powers can be summoned from souls entrapped in each of their skulls is explored in "Skull’s Vengeance." Catrin’s half-brother, a shapeshifter and druid, uses dark forces from the skulls of family members he has killed to destroy enemies on the battlefield.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Skull's Vengeance, what would they be?

"I am Woman," by Helen Reddy.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I enjoy reading historical fiction, historical romance, historical fantasy, and epic fantasy. These genres are the same as I write.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

The books at the top of my TBR pile include: “Minotaur's Lair" (Servant of the Gods Book 3) by Luciana Cavallaro; “Death in the Triangle,” by John Podlaski; “Son of Anger: A fast-paced Viking Saga filled with action and adventure" (Ormstunga Saga Book 1) by Donovan Cook; “The Fortune Keeper” by Deborah Swift; “Caledon” by Virginia Crow; “A Hussar’s Promise,” by Griffin Brady; and “Yossel's Journey” by Kathryn Lasky.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

One of my favorite scenes to write was from the perspective of Catrin's evil half-brother, King Marrock. The chapter is entitled, “A Grandfather’s Revenge,” and it foreshadows the powers of Catrin’s dead father whose soul is entrapped in his severed skull. The scene shows another side of Marrock as a devoted father. As he shows his sons the family skulls from which he summons his dark powers, he is distracted by rumbling outside the chamber and leaves them to investigate. Lightning strikes all around him and the fortress he has constructed. When Marrock returns to the chamber to gather his sons, he finds that his father’s skull is missing along with his sons.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I write all first drafts in longhand.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

"A winner is a dreamer who never gives up."—Nelson Mandela

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

You have the power to seize your dream as your destiny.

Interview with Davina Stone, Author of The Evie Effect

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Evie Effect?

I've always wanted to write a rock star romance. So I combined outrageously behaved rock star, Byron with avant garde sculptress, Evie, threw them into a stately home in Cornwall to work on the zaniest project ever— and voila, out came The Evie Effect. It's full of banter, heat, heart, and some truly poignant moments. I can guarantee you've never read a rock star romance quite like it!

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Evie Effect, what would they be?

Don't Stop Me Now, by Queen.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I enjoy everything romance, especially (of course) steamy rom/coms. But I also read literary fiction and fantasy. Anything that stretches my imagination.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

My Killer Vacation, by Tessa Bailey and Husband Material by Alexis Hall.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

There's a scene in the woods... You'll know it when you get there.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I speak the lines of my character when I'm trying to work out a scene... often while I'm driving; it sure gets me the odd funny look at traffic lights!

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

In relation to my writing career, I think it's the same as the theme song I mentioned above, "Don't stop me now, because I'm having a good time..." Thanks Freddy Mercury!

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I want them to remember that my books feel like a big warm hug as they close the last page!

Interview with A.M. Hargrove, Author of Tall, Dark, and Dreamy

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Tall, Dark, and Dreamy (A Billionaire Baines Family Novel)?

This book is part of my series, The Billionaire Baines family. It’s the second book, however, it’s a complete stand-alone. All my series are like this and the reason behind it is I am not a series reader. I love a series that doesn’t have to be read in order or those that contain zero cliff-hangers. Therefore, I enjoy writing these. They are actually companion novels. The reader can revisit all their favorite characters from previous novels, but it’s not necessary to know them. My inspiration for this one was I’d always wanted to write a novel with a dirty talking British guy and this was it!

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I LOVE, I mean LOVE mystery and suspense. It can come in any form—Romance, Paranormal, Thriller, Murder Mystery, and so on. I just love trying to figure out the bad guy/girl and solving the mystery.

Many of my books are sprinkled with suspense and some are downright romantic suspense.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Good grief, there are too many to name. But I’m currently reading an ARC of Harloe Rae’s latest novel, Mine For Yours. A few from my pile include the latest JR Ward releases—I haven’t gotten to them all. I also have The Quarry Girls by Jess Lourey, The Perfect Marriage by Jeneva Rose, a few by Rebecca Zanetti, a couple of Dean Koontz’s and like I said, just too many!

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

There’s a scene where they go horseback riding. The female MC is an extremely accomplished rider while her counterpart isn’t. It’s a bit humorous. And to add to that, I hate riding horses. Haha!

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

My dog, Walter, is by my side or sitting on the cushion behind my head, acting like a parrot. He’s with me constantly so he’s my true writing companion.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Today is a present and tomorrow a gift. Live life to its fullest.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

The passion that explodes between the two main characters.

Interview with Eleanor Chance, Author of The Last Masterpiece

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Last Masterpiece: The Master's Protégé Trilogy Book III?

I’ve been fascinated with the Renaissance era since I was young, and I read Irving Stone’s The Agony and the Ecstasy multiple times. When I later became a writer and read Girl with a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier, the idea for this story came to me and I couldn’t let it go. After years of research, it was finally time to bring the story to life.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I wouldn't say I have a favorite genre since I enjoy reading several types of books, but my top three are Historical Fiction, Suspenseful Women's Fiction, and Sci-if/Fantasy. I love writing everything!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

The Poison Keeper by Deborah Swift, Keeper of Enchanted Rooms by Charlie N. Holmberg, and The Venice Sketchbook by Rhys Bowen.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Tricky question since the answer would be a major spoiler, but my second favorite scene to write was the Epilogue. I actually wrote it long before I started writing The Last Masterpiece. I knew how this story would end from the beginning.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Music is a vital part of my writing process, maybe because I’m also a musician. Once I turn on my background ambience music, my creative juices start flowing and my brain kicks into writer mode. It’s pretty cool, actually, and a huge help!

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Yes, I believe we all have a hidden superhero just waiting to be unleashed! No one is ordinary. We all have the tools we need to overcome our trials and tragedies. We just need to believe in ourselves and tap into that inner superhero to help make the world better for everyone!

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I suppose the key take away is that even after tragedy and loss, or in difficult circumstances, it's possible to not only recover, but thrive. Life's never been easy or fair, but humans are resilient beings. No matter how many times we’re knocked down, we can always come back stronger than before. We don’t have to allow our circumstances defeat us. I believe that message is more important today than ever!

Interview with A. R. Shaw, Author of See the Light

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write See the Light?

I come up with storylines while in the shower or driving my Toyota FJ with no particular place to go. And while on one of these journeys, I wanted a family with no destination except safety, but when they saw the light... they knew they'd found something but at what cost?

I find it fascinating, as a post-apocalyptic author, that we as humans go to a place of fear when we don't understand something. And from that place of fear of the unknown, we often apply magic where it has no place to exist. This realization comes from my (hippy) mother… as a child, when something was amiss in the household, she would often blame it on Mr. Ghost, who committed the noise, moved an item, or wanted to displace blame in some way. Which often led me to a kind of quiet doubt. This practice made me skeptical and distrustful, lol. (Thanks, mom) And while coming up with See the Light, I found the characters on the edge of magic when they found sanctuary in a house with lights that they could not turn off, in a world where electricity had been vanquished long before.

There's always a reasonable explanation... if only we're brave enough to face the mystery.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of See the Light, what would they be?

The Quality of Mercy by Max Richter... in the beginning.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I read mostly thriller and dystopian. Not necessarily post-apocalyptic.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I'm still reading The Lincoln Highway but next up is C. A. Fletcher's Dead Water.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I loved the frustration the family went through trying to figure out the light source. Monty walking through the field with a lamp at night near the sundial.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Besides my space heater (different interview), I'd say listening to Two Steps from Hell on Pandora is also a quirky writing habit. It really gets things moving in an action scene.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Keep moving forward...

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

There's always an explanation... one you may not want to face but it's there in the darkness... bring your light.
