Interview with Kevin Nichols, Author of Shadows of Askargaard

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Shadows of Askargaard?

I can't seem to walk from one place to another without thinking of a story. I see a connected world. The people I meet, the things I've seen, they're all sewn into the fabric of this series. The characters I've created feel so personal to me because they're manifestations of the people that have impacted my life.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Shadows of Askargaard, what would they be?

This one's easy. For Pug, the MC, it's a shot at redemption (I like the Dan Vasc cover). Varahallas would be Blinding Lights by the Weeknd. Weasel would be Misery Business by Paramore.

Come to think of it, I've subconsciously thought about this question quite a bit.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Fantasy fiction. Followed closely by fantasy fiction and fantasy fiction. Love Abercrombie, Buroker, Sapkowski, and of course Sanderson.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Been feeling JD Rossells Ranger of the Titan Wild Series which NewInBooks turned me on to. I think the second book in the series drops relatively soon.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Ooph. This is literally impossible to answer. Pug in the arena below the rogue city of Askargaard comes to mind just because it has Bos'ni the lion in it who is lowkey my favorite sidekick. Pug in any tavern is also a treat.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Not quirky, but I discuss all my ideas with my brothers, Garrett and Colton, before I write them. Their feedback is really valuable. When they get excited about an idea, I get excited.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

When we go together, we go farther.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

A lot of people go their whole lives thinking they're not creative. I thought that way myself for the longest time. This notion that some people are creative and some people aren't is BS. Creativity is something you practice. Whether it's writing a story, inventing a recipe, or telling your kids a made up fairy tale before bedtime, creativity is something you practice and grow.

Interview with Avi Datta, Author of The Movement

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Movement (Time Corrector Series Book 2)?

In 1994, I dreamed of speaking with a girl fluently in Japanese. Trains were flying over buildings, and I was bidding goodbye to her. I ignored it and dived into Calculus, Statistics, and Quantum Mechanics. The dream reappeared again in 2020, and I could see the sunset in her eyes this time. So I named her Akane and started fleshing out the story. I wrote the story so that I wouldn’t forget it.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Movement (Time Corrector Series Book 2), what would they be?

This is actually an excellent question. I have synesthesia, so I can easily relate.

• “Final Assenct” from Hans from the last James Bon Film

• Liszt’s Consolation No. 3.

• Chopin’s Raindrop Prelude (Op. 28, no. 15)

• Attack on Titan Appleseed theme.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Believe it or not, I mostly read non-fiction. Books about watchmaking, art, and automobiles fascinate me.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

The Letters of Vicent van Gogh.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Two chapters in particular--Ashes, and Revelation-Stage 3. Those showed the weakness, and vulnerability of Vincent Abajian, beyond his obvious genius.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I need my double shot espresso before I start writing. It requires four bars of pre-infusion for 4-7 seconds, followed by 9 bars of extraction for 25-50 seconds.

And I need my playlist.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Yes. “It’s far better to die while dreaming than wake up every morning to find my dreams are dead.” This is my own quotation that I used in the book.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

The structure and content of pain are universal no matter what station one is in their life. Further, the unexplained nuances of Emika’s character get some clarity in the last three chapters. More clarity will come in Book two, which begins with Emika’s POV.

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Dish Dog?

I am intrigued by simple errors that criminals make that trip them up and get them caught. I wanted to create a unique criminal plot that readers, especially those who enjoy financial crimes, would find interesting.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I like to read legal thrillers.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

As I Saw It by Keith Wells.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

In the first scene where the perpetrator of the stock market insider scheme was introduced, it says that "with his oversized dark sunglasses on an overcast day, his ball cap pulled low over his face, and his jacket collar pulled up to hide half of his face, he would have looked suspicious in any other town or city in America, but in eclectic New York City, where two-thirds of the people on the street look suspicious, he fit right in."

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I normally think about the manuscript as I fall asleep and my subconscious mulls it over during the night. In the morning, the next scene is normally crystal clear in my mind. I imagine all writers do this.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I try to treat others the way that I'd want them to treat me.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

That it was a well-written, enjoyable read, worth their time.

Interview with Paty Jager, Author of Bear Stalker

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Bear Stalker?

After a trip to Montana and seeing a lodge on an island in a lake, I knew one day I would come up with a story to include that lodge. And I had been building up to bringing my main character's sister back into his life.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I enjoy reading mysteries. Not necessarily the same type as mine. I write a police procedural with a Fish and Wildlife officer as the main character. While I have read one or two CJ Box, Dwight Holing, and a couple of other authors’ books who also write about game wardens, I prefer to read mysteries that aren’t police procedurals.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Die Cut by Nelle Heran & C.K. Eastland, Guests an Anthology by NIWA members Shutter by Ramona Emerson, and A Calm and Normal Heart by Chelsea T. Hicks.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

When Hawke and the sister he just reunited with are sitting in his vehicle in front of a church and they are discussing her problem. His brotherly instincts resurface and they begin joking with each other.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I always have my green tea (hot in the winter, iced in the summer) on my desk. I have multiple sticky pads, small ones to keep track of what they did each day on a large whiteboard on the wall next to my desk, and larger ones to make notes to stick to my suspect chart. I also have a spiral notebook that I jot down what happens in each chapter as I write. To keep track of actions and clues. Not sure if they are quirky but they are habits.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

“If your dreams don’t scare you, they’re too small.” Richard Branson

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Even if you’ve been wronged, you can be the stronger person. I write stories with Native American characters to show they are strong, resilient, and have a place in this world.

Interview with Jeffrey L. Kohanek, Author of Wizardom Legends: Temple of the Unknown

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Wizardom Legends: Temple of the Unknown?

Tor Ranseur and his misfit crew of relic hunters were first introduced near the end of my Fall of Wizardoms series. While they only occupied a handful of chapters, I found them fun to write. Their camaraderie, team dynamic, and their constant questing for magical artifacts combine perfectly to create a page-turning and action-packed series. I enjoy writing quest stories anyway, so I found myself compelled to craft a spinoff series featuring this entertaining adventuring squad.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

For nearly four decades, I have almost exclusively read epic fantasy, so it was natural for me to write in the same genre. The many hundreds of books I have read also influence my storytelling.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I literally have hundreds of books waiting to be read. There are SO many talented fantasy authors out there waiting for readers to find them.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

While my books are packed with action, intrigue, and magic, the scenes I most enjoy are the comedic ones. There is a scene where the crew is about to enter a massive statue dedicated to an ancient deity. I can’t provide details without spoiling the moment, but I believe it is the funniest scene I have ever crafted.

Since my books are known for their humor (I see it mentioned in hundreds of reviews), that is a meaningful statement. I hope readers will check it out and let me know if they found it as hilarious to read as it was for me to write.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

My quirky writing habit is that I almost never write at a desk. In fact, I LEAVE my desk to write, often on a sofa, chair, in an airport, on a plane, on a the patio, etc… I also like having the TV or music on as background noise. When I begin writing, the world around me just fades away.

Also, when I write at home, it is often with my French Bulldog, Frodo, on my lap.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I believe that if you are a good person and make an honest effort, things will work out. Yes, I am an optimist but I also know the value of hard work. You need both to succeed.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I want readers to know there are more books coming in the world of Wizardoms. Temple of the Unknown is a great place for new readers to start, but it is also written to thrill Wizardoms veterans. However, it is only the beginning. A full trilogy featuring Tor and his crew are coming this spring and more books might come in the future if these sell well and readers demand more.
