Interview with Kyle Waller, Author of Cretaceous Kings

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Cretaceous Kings?

Ever since I was a child I have been fascinated with animals, both prehistoric and modern. I grew up watching the “Walking With” series and my favorites were, “Walking with Dinosaurs”, “Walking with Beasts”, and “The Ballad of Big Al”. This catapulted my obsession with all things prehistoric. My obsession with animals started with the late, great, Steve Irwin, I never missed an episode of “The Crocodile Hunter” as a child. Documentaries such as, “The Life of Mammals”, Planet Earth”, and the “Future is Wild” also strengthened my love for animals.

As for this particular book my biggest inspiration for the story was a coalition of six lion brothers called the Mapogos from Sabi Sands Game Reserve in South Africa. I saw a documentary about them in high school and was blown away by the story. These lions were particularly brutal and my teenage self, couldn’t help but imagine “How cool would it be if T-Rexes did shit like this?” lol. There is potential evidence of other tyrannosaur species like albertosaurus and daspletosaurus, being social so the idea wasn’t that far-fetched to me.

Years later during my senior year of college, I wrote the first chapter in one night, fueled by a spontaneous rush of creativity. Due to graduation and job worries I abandoned the project. However, in 2020 during the pandemic I regained my creative spark and finished the book in early 2022, finally publishing it in October of this year.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Cretaceous Kings, what would they be?

Leviathan: King’s Disease - Nas

Hannibal: Ambitionz az a Ridah - Tupac

Carnis: All My Life – K-Ci & JoJo

Mansur: Many Men - 50 Cent

I’m a big hip hop fan...

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I honestly don’t read much lol, when I do read it’s usually scientific articles I find on Google. So, I’d pick non-fiction as my favorite genre to read. My favorite genre to write is science fiction, so technically it differs. However, the articles I read directly influence my writing, seeing as how they are dinosaur/animal related most of the time. I do have a few books from childhood that I love such as “White Fang”, which was a big influence on how I wrote the animal interactions in my novel, and “Moby Dick”.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Sabertooth-Mauricio Anton (started but didn’t finish)

Raptor Red-Robert T. Bakker (started but didn’t finish again)

Jurassic Park-Michael Crichton ( I know, crazy, I’ve never read Jurassic Park. Seen all the movies though)

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

That’s a very hard question. If I had to choose it would be the last scene of the ninth chapter, where a giant t-rex emerges from the forest and scares the brothers off of a kill. I wanted to capture the beauty of the landscape along with the intimidating power of this monstrous tyrannosaur and it was quite fun to write.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I sometimes like to listen to lyrical rap music before writing. I get inspired by the clever wordplay and it helps me get through writers block, as I “freestyle” write my own wordplay, although it may not always be clever. Even if I do write something I deem to be horrible, at least I have an idea of where I want to take things and I can go back later and fix it. Jay-Z’s song “Lyrical Exercise” gets me pretty inspired to write.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Lately I have been really goal and dream orientated, so my philosophy would be never let anything stand between you and your dreams. I am starting an entertainment business “Rex God Entertainment” and my novel is the first step in that process. Not only will I continue to write novels, I also hope to release graphic novels, audiobooks, and eventually CGI dinosaur documentaries.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

The fight for survival is a tale as old as life on this planet. With everything going on now, times are pretty hard. Never give up, keep fighting.

Interview with Thomas Scott, Author of State of Play

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write State of Play: A Virgil Jones Mystery Thriller - Book 16?

My mortgage company. They are always a great source of inspiration. They send me these lovely little notes every single month asking for thousands of dollars. Apparently they plan on continuing this practice for the next twenty years or so, which means I still have quite a few books left to write.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of State of Play: A Virgil Jones Mystery Thriller - Book 16, what would they be?

I can't think of any songs right now. Why, you ask? Because my wife provides daycare for our first grandchild, who just turned one year old. What that means is I've got songs going through my head all the live long day. Kid songs, like Wheels on the Bus, Patty Cake, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Old MacDonald Had A Farm...and on and on and on. Now, I'll be the first to admit that my wife has a lovely singing voice, but the lyrics to these songs just won't go away. Someone help me. Please...I'm begging ya.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

My favorite genre to read is Mystery, Thriller & Suspense, which is the same I write. I'm also a fan of Literary Fiction if done good. Whoops, I meant if done well.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Referencing one of the previous questions, lately it's books like: Goodnight Moon, Everyone Poops, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Cat In The Hat...stuff like that. I'm pretty sure I've single-handedly managed to give Amazon's suggestion algorithm an electronic aneurism.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

My answer to this question rarely varies (see, I'm starting to sound like Dr. Seuss) but there are two parts of a manuscript I love: The beginning, when there is nothing more than a blank canvas and the story can go in any direction, and the ending. All my stories are very character-driven, so it's fun to watch them lead me down the path. Even though I write pretty hard-core Crime Fiction, there is a lot of humor in my books, and that's always fun to play with. Humor also gives the reader a chance to catch their breath.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I'm not sure if this qualifies or not, but I can't seem to write unless I have a glass of orange juice on my desk at all times. I buy so much of the stuff I'm considering a purchase of an orange grove in Florida. No joke. My office could catch fire and you'd have trouble getting me away from my desk, but if my orange juice glass is empty, watch out. Grandpa is on the move!

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Laugh every chance you get.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

To leave a positive review on Amazon. (Just kidding...or am I?)

I think the thing I'd like readers to remember is how they feel after finishing the story, then tell me about it. Or better yet, tell others how they felt by leaving a review...you know, the one I was just kidding about. (Or was I?)

Interview with Karen Kay, Author of She Captures My Heart

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write She Captures My Heart?

The Native American Medicine Man has always intrigued me because he was known to be able to heal people with natural remedies, as well as to help them become well by means of rhythm and song. Sometimes the medicine man was known to be able to see into the future and often he was aware of what was in the environment for many miles around him. The old Native American Scout also had this ability. There is a lot we don't today know about these gallant men and it intrigued me to be able to research this and write about it.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of She Captures My Heart, what would they be?

For the heroine, Amelia McIntosh, I would pick the song, "A LOVE SO BEAUTIFUL," by Roy Obison. I would pick this song because she brings beauty and love into the hero's life. For the hero, Gray Falcon, it would be "HEART TAKER," by John Trudell. This is a beautiful and romantic poem/song by John Trudell.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Romance, of course. But I also enjoy Fantasy, Paranormal, and Adventure. But with other genres, for me, it must have a romantic element. Also, I love reading Native American history for my stories. This research, as we call it, is truly the icing on the cake.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Mostly I have research books on my TBR list: AN INDIAN WINTER by James Willard Schultz; THE SUN GOD'S CHILDREN, by James Willard Schultz; IN THE GREAT APACHE FOREST, by James Willard Schultz; FOOLS CROW by Thomas E. Mails; BLACKFEET AND BUFFALO, by James Willard Schultz. There are others but, at present, these are what I have waiting for me.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

There's a scene in the book near the middle of it where the heroine "comes clean" with the hero and confesses not only what's in her heart, but the terrible problem she is facing and how she hopes it might affect him and her. I didn't really know what his reaction was going to be to this. At first he was a little angry with her, but then, when he began to tease her and to court her for real, his antics made me giggle a little

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Hmmm. I like to be warm when I write, especially I like warmth on my feet. Must have my coffee handy, also. And, when I am creatively writing (not editing), I love to have music playing in the background.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Another hmmm moment… I guess when it comes to writing, it might be "finish what I start." Also, it applies to other things, like housework…finish what I start. Sometimes not easy to do, but if I don't do it, my mind seems to get cluttered. So the motto, "Finish what I start," would work well, I think.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I think I might like for people to think about this: that people are people regardless of color. An Apache Medicine Man once said that we are all one race, the human race, and it comes in different colors. I think he was very wise.

Interview with C. A. Phipps, Author of Gingerbread and Gunshots

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Gingerbread and Gunshots : A small town culinary cozy mystery.?

This is book 7 in the Maple Lane Mysteries and I had recently written the prequel about my bakers time living in Manhattan. The story of her friend coming to visit Maple Falls just came to me.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Gingerbread and Gunshots : A small town culinary cozy mystery., what would they be?

Definitely something from Agatha Christy! Theme from "Agatha Christie's Marple" - Dominik Scherrer

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love all sub genres of cozy mysteries.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Witch Swindled in Westerham by Dionne Lister is up next, but I have so many, I can only look at the next in line!

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The epilogue! Spoiler alert - The sheriff has a secret that only Gran knows about.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I shift from room to room over the course of the day. A different position and outlook helps my mind and body reset. And I love writing in cafes - people watching is research, right?

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Love what you’re doing. (If you don’t how do you expect to be happy?)

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Maple Falls. Her characters and the sense of community.
