Interview with Randal Nerhus & Marjorie Carter, Author of Talks Like Thunder: Red With Native Blood
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Talks Like Thunder: Red With Native Blood?
Marjorie Carter was a wonderful mentor and a dear friend. When she died of pneumonia in 2004, I had the only copy of her manuscript. I completed the story and brought the series to publication for her.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Talks Like Thunder: Red With Native Blood, what would they be?
I have yet to discover the ideal music for the story. Something like how African tribal drumming was used in Peter Gabriel’s Security album.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I’ve never thought of it like this before, but I’ve always preferred complex novels that expanded beyond genre boundaries. Though the Red With Native Blood series fits best in young adult, many themes appeal to Western, adult, and historical fiction readers as well.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
I’d like to take another look at some of my old favorites:
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, by Robert M Pirsig
Shogun, by James Clavell
Secrets of the Talking Jaguar, by Martin Prechtel
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
I like Marjorie’s writing better than mine. After Thunder befriends a Mescalero Apache named Walks Alone, the scenes take the reader to the limit of intensity and heartbreak.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
While living in multiple countries over the years, creating the opportunity to write was enough to get me working. Especially so in the Amazon jungle where I needed my neighbor’s generator. I provided gas, and offered the kids popcorn, and a movie of their choice to watch on my laptop while it charged. After returning home and making sure no snakes, tarantulas, or scorpions had stopped by for a visit, I’d set the screen to the lowest brightness and write for four hours.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
Without discipline, you can’t reach the first stone of the Medicine Wheel. –Marjorie Carter
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
We were all once tribal. Recognizing what we’ve lost is essential for a meaningful life.

Interview with Jess Armstrong, Author of Lion House
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Lion House?
A long-time friend and I were discussing what it would be like to be stuck together forever. The conversation spiraled from there, and the idea for Lion House was born.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Lion House, what would they be?
I love “Killer Queen” by Queen for Isobel and Rose.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
Fantasy is without a doubt my favorite genre to read as well as to write. I love to escape from the everyday and the ordinary.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo (by Taylor Jenkins Reid), Kingdom of the Wicked (by Kerri Maniscalco), and Crescent City (by Sarah J. Maas).
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
My favorite scene occurs near the end of the book. Isobel and Rose are thrown into a heart-wrenching situation and are forced to rely on their past and connection to each other if they have any hope of making it out alive. I get goosebumps every time I read this scene.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
When I write, I type a million words a second. Then spend about an hour cleaning up the disaster I just poured onto the page. Edits are so important.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
“Never let fear be the reason.” For example, if there’s something you’re undecided on, and fear is the thing holding you back, let it go. Do the thing. The fear will pass, but the regret will not.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
I hope readers connect with my characters, and that the connection lasts long after the final page of the story.

Interview with Abigail Drake, Author of A Royal Pain
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write A Royal Pain?
I've always been fascinated by the way the media can influence how we feel about people and events. Once they determine someone is a hero, we expect them to be nothing but heroic, but that sometimes is not the case. I wanted to create this serious undertone as part of something light-hearted and funny, and suddenly my main character Chloe Burke was born!
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of A Royal Pain, what would they be?
I think for Chloe it would have to something like "Made You Look" by Meghan Traitor.
For Nico it would need to be something much darker! Perhaps "Take Me to Church" by Hozier.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I love reading many different genres, but romance (no pun intended) has my heart. It's what I love to read, and it's also what I love to write.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
I just finished "Song of Achilles" by Madeline Miller (WOW), and I'm planning to start "Verity" by Colleen Hoover.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
My favorite scene is Chloe and Nico's first kiss. There was something so tender and sweet about it, and it was at a point in the book when for the first time in a long time, Chloe finally had hope things would be getting better in her own life soon.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
No cats on laps, but I do have an 80 lb Labrador on my feet! His name is Capone, and he's hilarious. He has his own Facebook page (Capone the Wonder Dog), and he has more fans than I do!
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
You don't know what someone else is going through, and it never hurts to be kind.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
I hope the book makes them smile. I write happy books. I want to make my readers happy. If I've accomplished that, what more could I ask for?

Interview with Kate Sheeran Swed, Author of The Tournament
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Tournament (Interstellar Trials Book 1)?
Until we can find a way to defy physics and push spaceships faster than lightspeed (hint: it's not actually possible), humans hoping to explore distant star systems will need to get creative. A lot of stories about interstellar travel handle those kinds of distances with cryo sleep or embryo transportation. The idea that fascinates me the most, though, is the one that involves generation ships. When I say it fascinates me, I mean I'm mildly obsessed with it. This is not the first story I've written about them, and I doubt it'll be the last.
One of the themes that comes up in a lot of my work is intergenerational conflict, so the idea of a ship (or in the case of my books, an entire fleet) full of people that've been sentenced to live their entire lives in the stars by a bunch of their great-great-great grandparents… it's just full of possibilities. How do you live your life if you never touch the ground? Would you even know the difference, really? Resent it? And of course, there are lots of problems with that approach, scientifically. Ships break down. Crops fail. And there's no one to come to your aid. That kind of isolation sends a chill up my spine.
So the idea behind the Interstellar Trials is that humanity sent a fleet of ships sailing for the stars, rather than just one or two. The variety in the gene pool is important. In reality, it'd strain Earth's resources to assemble even one mission like this, but for reasons unknown, the characters' ancestors sent a hundred ships. They must have been pretty desperate. Of course, humans being humans, a war broke out among the fleet ships and by the time the story begins, it's been split into two factions for the heroine's entire life. One side is ruled by a tyrannical dictator, and the other is free. All I needed, then, was a heroine who's lived her entire life off the grid on the more dystopian side of the fleet.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Tournament (Interstellar Trials Book 1), what would they be?
Bad Intentions and the Devil Within by Digital Daggers are two of the main songs on my playlist for the main character, Reggie. You can probably tell just from the titles that she's a *little* bit prickly. I like my heroines with sharp edges. For writing the space battles and stuff in this series, I listened to Moscow by Autoheart on repeat.
I have a playlist for the trilogy HERE.
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I read across genres, and there's genuinely not much I won't at least try. But science fiction is my favorite. I like all kinds of sci-fi, too. The stuff I write tends to be soft (sometimes called light) sci fi, which means it's more adventure based than hard science fiction (think the Martian). But I read it all! I'm also a huge fantasy fan, especially epic fantasy.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
I'm a mood reader, so my TBR pile is very unruly. I'm really excited to read Marie Lu's new book, Stars and Smoke. I always love her stuff. I'm in the middle of Luke Mitchell's Harvesters series right now, which is seriously addicting, so I'll probably binge-read the rest of that before the month is out. Angie Thomas' new fantasy book, Nic Blake and the Remarkables, also sounds like a lot of fun!
I seriously have so many books I want to read. It's not even funny.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
My favorite scene is a spoiler (rude!) but my SECOND favorite scene happens just after Reggie uses her face-mask technology to steal another girl's identity. She takes the girl's spot in this tournament that's supposed to be like an olive branch between the fleets because she thinks she might have a chance to escape that way.
She's been an outsider on her own ship for her whole life, and now suddenly she's surrounded by kids from both fleets. It's seriously disorienting for her. She doesn't know what any of the food is, she doesn't know how to act, and she's worried she won't be able to pull off the scam. And then she meets Noah Ramsay, who kind of takes her under his wing. Anything with banter is my favorite, honestly. And I love a fish out of water.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I'm a creature of habit, really. It'd be so boring to watch me write. I sit down with my coffee (or water bottle if it's later in the day) and I just work. Often with thunderstorms or movie soundtracks playing in my headphones to help me focus.
I do have a lineup of Marvel super-lady figures on my desk, though. I have Gamora, Captain Marvel, Scarlet Witch, and Black Widow. I also have Princess Leia, and a stuffed Rosita from the movie Sing!
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
I like this one, which is attributed to Goethe (possibly incorrectly): Boldness has genius, power and magic in it. Begin it now.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
I want readers to take away a sense of fun, adventure, and escape – and maybe lose track of the real world for a little while.

Interview with Liza Snow, Author of Obedience
What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Obedience?
I was at the Ringling Museum in Sarasota, Florida and I met a silk aerialist named Cassandra, who told me "you should write a book about a silk aerialist and name her after me."
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Obedience: Book One in the Ties That Bind Series, what would they be?
My narrators picked these actually! Chandler: "Shook Me All Night Long" by AC/DC
Cassandra: "Rewrite the Stars" from Greatest Showman
What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
Science Fiction/Fantasy and Romance! So, partially yes. Haha.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
Oh man, I have one my editor recommended I need to read and besides that, my head is in the game doing rewrites for my second book! Lol.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
For Obedience, that's a hard question... I loved so many scenes. I think the scene where Chandler takes Cassandra back to his condo for the first time to practice Shibari on her, but he's like "this is only a demonstration, it's just art, it's not a prelude to something else..." and then the entire time is fighting his feelings. I loved seeing him slowly unravel the entire book, it was amazing. I also loved Chapter 18, when he finally gives into the girl! And for the audiobook, Chapter 29, the Cirque du Lys show!
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I must ALWAYS have a cup of coffee (my narrator Daniel made me my favorite mug now, it's adorable and says "Just a girl who likes Shibari." Lol. I was so surprised when I got it. It's my lucky mug now. And I have to have ambient music on, and I get up at 4am and go for a little drive first before I get started.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference."
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
It's a series!! Don't panic!! Haha.
