Interview with John Whitman, Author of Disunion: The Mantiz Gambit

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Disunion: The Mantiz Gambit?

I was doing some reading on the U.S. Civil War, and I imagined what that might be like, and how it might turn out, if it had happened in space rather than on a continent.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

As a reader, I enjoy science fiction, suspense, fantasy, and general action stories. As I writer, I enjoy sci-fi and action very much!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

That pile always included non-fiction as well. I just started Renegade, the first book in The Spiral Wars; I have also WEIRD, Milk (the history of milk), and a new book by Martha Wells.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

There's a hand-to-hand fight sequence between three protagonists and one alien bodyguard toward the end of the story. I'm a martial artist, so that fight scene is my favorite moment in the book!

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Nothing weird, but I do often take a break just before a big, important scene. It's sort of an intellectual gathering of my breath.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Nothing is as good as it sounds or as bad as it seems.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Generally, I hope they have a sense of time well spent. Specifically, I'd like them to feel that the characters were all imbued with life.

Interview with Kay Cove, Author of Sing Your Secrets

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Sing Your Secrets?

My first serious relationship didn't end well. Space and separation was the key to my growth and ability to move on, but I spent a lot of time thinking about what real closure means. I think a lot of those feelings inspired this story. The heroine in Sing Your Secrets, Reese, had to make a decision to not let the painful fallout from her first relationship keep her from experiencing love again and that's a difficult thing to do! It's so much easier to close your heart to new experiences than to welcome the risk that comes with love when you've been hurt before.

This story was about forgiveness and redemption but not necessarily for the rekindling of a past relationship, but for the heroine to appreciate the journey, both good and bad, that made her into the person she was. The (metaphorical) bumps and bruises along the way made her so much stronger. It was all part of the big picture and I wanted readers to see a heroine be able to forgive her past mistakes and really appreciate her evolution as a woman and an individual.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Sing Your Secrets, what would they be?

So many songs! This story is very much music inspired. But if I had to pick one from the SYS playlist to represent the main characters, I'd say it's "Weight" by SoMo. I listened to that song so many times as I wrote this story. It's such a raw, honest, portrayal of the tough parts of being a musician - the struggle, the pressure to perform and succeed. That song is a question to your significant other: Will you be there when I'm down? Can you help carry me when the weight is too much for one person? Are you in it for real, through the highs and lows? That song will always have a special place in my heart!

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I typically stay in the romance genre. If there isn't love in the story, it doesn't really capture my attention. That being said, I definitely like to read different subgenres than I write. I'm a big fantasy romance fan! I love all the mystery, world-building, and adventure. I also have been adding a lot of dark romances to my TBR lately, just because they are dominating the market and I see so much creativity and lines being pushed (and sometimes crossed). I love to read authors who take risks and write boldly!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

It's embarrassingly long. I write and release pretty quickly so I don't have a ton of time to really dive into all the books I want to, but a couple of titles at the top of my list are Song of Achilles, ACOTAR, Meghan Quinn's entire backlist (ha!), Sara Adam's new titles, and any and everything by Lucy Score. I also want to start Shantel Tessier's most recent series and check out a few of H.D. Carlton's best sellers.

How's that for variety? I'm definitely a mood reader.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

This is kind of an IYKYK response, but there's a scene in SYS where Miles (my MMC) finds out something that completely shocks him. He's under the impression he was lied to and manipulated by his love interest, and I know most readers will flip the page expecting a typical miscommunication, third-act breakup situation. But I go in a completely different direction. Instead of the usual devices used to create tension and angst in a story, I decided to let my main characters have a really open and honest conversation about who they are, and what they need from a relationship. They have to decide if they trust each other. It's my favorite scene of the story because it's just so genuine. It's exactly how you'd want these characters to behave, and I just wanted to give readers that gratifying moment of watching these characters sidestep a huge relationship land mine.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Not really. I will say my husband worked really hard to help me set up a really nice office/writing area in our home that is comfy and secluded... And I never use it. Ha! I do most of my writing in our old beat-up recliner in the living room amidst all the kids' toys, with the piled-up dirty dishes in the kitchen behind me. I used to need complete quiet and focus to write, and now I'm learning to thrive in the chaos. I actually write better that way in my opinion.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Basically whatever Brené Brown says to do. Haha! No, in all seriousness, I have learned so much from her talks about vulnerability. It's really difficult to take something that's so close to your heart and share it with the world and have no control over how people perceive it. I always say that I can control what I write, but I can't control what people read. Books are subjective, perception is different for everyone. All I can control is doing my best and writing the stories that I want to. So on the days when I stumble upon a nasty one-star review of one of my books, or sales are struggling, or I'm full of doubt, I try to remember Brené's talks about being brave enough to be in the arena. It's not easy to show up and allow yourself to be seen. I try to find my validation in the bravery of just showing up and being proud of myself for chasing my goals and dreams.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Oh, that's a tough one. I think there are a lot of life lessons I tried to convey in Sing Your Secrets. Maybe the most important would be to unapologetically be yourself and give yourself permission to love what you love and pursue what makes you happy. Living your life by someone else's standards or expectations is incredibly unfulfilling. Take the time to define what happiness looks like for you, and let that and that alone be your guiding light.

Writing The Lived Multicultural Existence by Evy Journey

Writing The Lived Multicultural Existence

The Golden Manuscripts: A Novel is the sixth book in the series Between Two Worlds. The main theme weaving through five of the six-book series is how the “Other” navigates the realities of living in two (or more) separate cultures within a society.

Who is the “Other?” The “Other” is anyone not like “Us.” That could be someone who is:

  1. of different ethnicity;
  2. an immigrant;
  3. raised in a culture different from the mainstream, who may have trouble blending in;
  4. currently living most of the time in a culture different from the mainstream;
  5. a combination of any of the above.

The “Other” usually lives a multicultural life. If that life is outside a multicultural setting, conflicts are likely to arise.

The clash of cultures can be so strong that choosing between the dictates of the dominant culture and the often foreign traditions in which one has been raised may make the “Other” feel like two different people. It can be an unbearable state of duality, but they can’t run away from it.

In The Golden Manuscripts, Clarissa, the main character, is an Asian/Caucasian young woman who has inhabited seven different countries by the time she’s twenty. Of the six protagonists in the BTW series, she exemplifies the extreme of what could happen to someone who grows up living in several different cultures—she has no place she could call home.

She chooses to find her home by immersing herself in the only constant element in her childhood–picture books. They nurtured a love for art, specifically, illuminated manuscripts, medieval picture books handwritten on parchment in which illustrations, decorations, and letters are gilded. It’s an art form rarely practiced nowadays, though techniques in their production (e.g., gilding) have been appropriated by some contemporary artists.

I invent multicultural characters for the obvious reason that I, myself, am one. My own experiences are reflected in those of my characters, although none of them is a fictionalized me.

I spent my early years in a country of hybrid traditions, defined by waves of colonizers and immigrants—nearly four hundred years of Spanish rule, fifty years of American colonization, and ten years of Japanese invasion. Plus waves of Chinese immigrants. You could say I was born multicultural. Today, I live in a veritable melting pot, and I love to travel to keep experiencing other cultures.

My characters also tend to turn inward, a coping mechanism that can be triggered by social milieus we perceive as new, or strange, or where we have difficulty fitting in. Clarissa’s best friend, other than her brother, is herself who she refers to as “her inner voice:”

I have no one I call friend. Except myself, of course. That part of me who perceives my actions for what they are. My inner voice. My constant companion and occasional nemesis. Moving often and developing friendships lasting three years at most, I’ve learned to turn inward."

Interview with J. A. Collie, Author of Grays of Novart

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Grays of Novart?

Grays of Novart is the product of my fascination with the universe and years of experience in technology. While the blistering tech pace became the catalyst for Novart’s gadgets, I wanted the story to stir other questions. If intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe, would they be akin to human beings? Is human nature an intelligence trait? This book is the series opener, and I’m telling the story from the aliens’ point of view. Perhaps these gray-skinned beings are just like us, and Trinity Knight another modern-day heroin.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Grays of Novart, what would they be?

Survivor by Destiney’s Child (Trinity); Don’t Stop Believing by Journey (Dr. Hampton); I'm Still Standing by Elton John (Dr. Sharon).

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I read more romantic suspense than sci-fi, but I love watching sci-fi series and movies. I write in both genres, and that makes them my favorite at this point.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

A couple of my fellow Koehler Book authors top the list: HELL OF HOSANNA by Kip Langton; and THE DARK ATTIC by Tom Voychehovski. THE HOUSE AT THE END OF THE WORLD by Dean Koontz are among the notables.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Contemplation (Chapter Twenty-four) is heartfelt. Trinity finds herself in dire straits and seeks solace in memories of her father and great Warriors who had made the ultimate sacrifice. A vulnerable young Warrior carries the weight of her world, and everything is riding on the mammoth task ahead. Trinity’s strengths and weaknesses are balanced to make us feel her pain and cheer her on while giving us hope that she will prevail.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

No quirky habits, but I won’t put words on paper (computer screen) until I’ve written the scene in my head. Then I go back and fill in the details.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Treat others the way you want to be treated. It works in all facets of life, and following it could bring you complete happiness and joy.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

People are complicated, and no one is all good or all bad. Before dismissing others, try and understand the reasons for their actions. And don’t blame yourself if, in the end, you have to walk away.

Interview with Rachanee Lumayno, Author of Heir of Magic and Mischance

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Heir of Magic and Mischance?

The first book in the Kingdom Legacy series was a pandemic baby. It was inspired by a Dungeons and Dragons campaign I was supposed to be a part of. The campaign fell through, but the character I had created for it stayed with me, and became the focus of book one - Heir of Amber and Fire. And now here we are with book three - Heir of Magic and Mischance.

I wanted to write a series that could be read out of order. I enjoy reading, but as I have less time for leisure reading, it takes a lot to make me pick up a series. If I see that a series is already very established (What? Ten books and counting?!) then I won’t start it. So that was a driving force behind why I wrote the Kingdom Legacy series the way I did. Each book focuses on one of the kingdoms in the Gifted Lands; Heir of Magic and Mischance is about the military kingdom of Rothschan… which is also the kingdom nobody likes. So the challenge was to find a story that could, hopefully, redeem this unlikable place in the end. How well I did, you get to decide!

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Heir of Magic and Mischance, what would they be?

Oops I Did It Again • Do You Believe in Magic • Revenge Party

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

My favorite genre is fantasy, either adult or YA, followed by general YA and general fiction. I used to work in a bookstore, and then a library, so I’ll honestly read anything if it sounds intriguing to me. But whenever I want to find something new to read, I always gravitate toward the fantasy section.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

What books are in my TBR pile? Ha, too many to count! Does work count? (I’m an audiobook narrator, and I always have manuscripts to read!) But in terms of my non-work TBR, I’m currently working through Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries. There’s a few other books I haven’t read yet floating around on my Kindle somewhere, but I forgot the titles. I try to keep my TBR pile small because I KNOW I’ll forget what’s in it.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I’m not really sure I had a favorite scene, but I did enjoy writing the interactions between Adalynn and Laydon. I like comedy and banter, and because of who these two were in relation to each other, I was able to give many of their scenes together a touch of comedic flair.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I often write with my cat Riley in my lap. (Honestly, because I work at home, Riley and I are usually together. Unless he’s napping or eating, he’s either on my lap, on my desk, or in the booth with me recording.) I also like to write with either gaming videos or ambient sound videos in the background. I have a “witchy coffeehouse” favorite that, when I put that on, I can just write for hours to. I’ll sometimes do the “LA writer” thing and take my laptop to a local coffee shop. The change of scenery definitely helps me focus, although my wallet doesn’t always like that idea!

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

When I was in high school, I was active in our school’s theater group. I often helped out on crew—props, set building. One of the things the stage manager used to say was, “The set won’t get done if you just sit there.” I often think of that when I’m feeling unmotivated to do anything (which, when you’re self-employed, can happen a lot!).

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I hope they remember the characters! I try to write engaging characters who, even though they’re in a fantasy setting, still feel real. And if I’ve entertained you for a few hours and you enjoyed my books, then I’ve done my job. 🙂

Interview with Ciara Blume, Author of The Princess and the Paparazzi

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Princess and the Paparazzi?

I've been thinking about this story for years. I love a good Prince and Pauper retelling and who can resist the idea of trading places. I think everyone has a doppelgänger fantasy or two. The Parent Trap, Monte Carlo, The Princess Switch are all irresistible versions of this classic modern fairytale. On the surface it's light and fun but there are deeper themes of identity that run throughout this book. Both of the main characters of this story are international adoptees, and I am the mom of an international adoptee. Many of the characters and incidents I describe are inspired by people in the adoption communities I’ve been active in for decades. I just threw in Dungeons and Dragons for fun!

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Princess and the Paparazzi, what would they be?

Kenna - Banana Pancakes by Jack Johnson

Lorelei - About Damn Time by Lizzo

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love to read women's humorous fiction. But I also love historical fiction and fantasy, anything with magical realism and I'm re-reading the classics.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I'm about to read The Heir to Uncertain Magic by Charlie Holmberg and then I cannot wait to dig into new books by Emily Henry, Lindsey Kelk and Abby Jimenez.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I loved writing all the scenes where the characters were sure they were pulling the wool over everyone's eyes, but in fact their close friends and family weren't fooled.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

My odd eyed cat is my writing bff. She is always on top of me. I don't know how I'd write without her - I have developed whole ways of sitting and leaning from trying to keep her off my laptop.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

The next one will be better! I know every book I write could be better if I took another week, month, year. But done is better than perfect and I hope to do a little better with each book and series I write!

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I would love for readers to remember how this book made them feel, which hopefully is good!
