Interview with Bob Herpe, Author of The Other Side of Crisis

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Other Side of Crisis?

This is book 2 of a series, "Gravnick" being book 1 and "The Other Side of Crisis" being book 2.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Other Side of Crisis, what would they be?

I did it my way.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Suspense Thriller, yes.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I do not write from an outline. I write a full story about the main characters as to where they are from, how they grew up etc. This way I know how they will react in a certain situation and then write my opening and an ending.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Have fun everyday.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

People of different cultures, backgrounds and political beliefs can find a way to live and love together.

Interview with Rachel Aukes, Author of Secondhand Spaceman

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Secondhand Spaceman?

Three pieces all came together that inspired this book. First, I love reading novellas and there aren't nearly enough of those out there. Second, I've always wanted to write something more lighthearted (even campy). Third, I had a title I really wanted to use, and so Secondhand Spaceman was born!

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Secondhand Spaceman, what would they be?

Wagon Wheel by Old Crow Medicine Show reflects Frank's journey through the stars with all sorts of stops along the way.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I'd say speculative fiction which is really a group of genres, because I love any "what if" stories, whether they be science fiction, fantasy, horror, or even romance. That's probably why I write in so many genres, too.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Firefly: Big Damn Hero by James Lovegrove, The Olympian Affair by Jim Butcher, and System Collapse by Martha Wells.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I loved writing the scene where Frank has to sign the contract to be a space repo agent. It's an utterly mundane activity that's made quirky in a completely alien environment.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I have ONE playlist that contains songs from a ton of game soundtracks from Halo, Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, Mass Effect, Deus Ex, Titanfall, and more. It gets my head into writing mode and the songs work for every sort of scene.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

There ain't no such thing as a free lunch, or TANSTFL, popularized by Heinlein. It reminds me that if I want to (write, do, achieve, insert favorite verb here) more, then I need to get off my butt and do it... or in the case of writing, sit on my butt and do it.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

There's nothing wrong with reading a book purely for fun. We often forget that as we grow older and more constrained on time.

Interview with Tricia T. LaRochelle, Author of Sun in My Heart

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Sun in My Heart?

It is so hard to know what inspires me to write a book. The idea comes to me and then it grows until the story begins to tell itself. I prefer themes that reflect sacrifice and courage in my work because I admire those quaities in people.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Sun in My Heart, what would they be?

Bring Me To Life by Evanescence; I'll Stand by You by Pretenders; Meet Me in the Woods by Lord Huron.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love a good romantic suspense or contemporary romance with unpredictable elements.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

"The Love of My Life" by Rosie Walsh. "Hidden in Snow" by Viveca Sten.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The unpredictable scenes caught me the most. And also caused me to tear up.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

No quirky habits. I do listen to meditation music as I write.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

My philosophy is to never let anyone tell you that your work isn't worthy or that you can't achieve your dreams. I've always told my kids to surround themselves with good people. I've had to learn that lesson the hard way. Good people can lift you up. Toxic people can tear you down.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

I want my readers to remember the emotions that my book evoked in them. How the work touched them.

Interview with Tonya Mitchell, Author of The Arsenic Eater's Wife

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Arsenic Eater's Wife?

The book is inspired by a real case from 1889 I'd never heard of before, and I knew it needed to be told. It had all the hallmarks of a gripping mystery: death, addiction, lies, twists, revenge, love… and poison.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Arsenic Eater's Wife, what would they be?

Definitely Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood” for the main character, Constance, to her arsenic eater husband, William: "Did you think we'd be fine/ Still got scars on my back from your knife…/ Now did you think it all through?/ All these things will catch up to you."

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love all mysteries, but historical ones have a special place in my heart, probably because I write historical fiction. Bonus points for anything Gothic, creepy, and dark.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

T. Kingfisher’s What Moves the Dead and The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O’Farrell.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Probably the one in which Constance sees something that completely destroys her marriage and sets the course for the remainder of her life.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I drink Harney & Sons Hot Cinnamon Spice Tea. Like, A LOT.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

"Proceed as if success is inevitable." It’s what gets me through lousy writing days.

Interview with Aaditya Sengupta Dhar, Author of Kaalchakra: The Rise of Kalki

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Kaalchakra: The Rise of Kalki?

I was always interested in reading history and mythology, having devoured books about Ancient Rome, Greece and read the Illiad, Odyssey, Gilgamesh, Beowulf and so on. One day, my parents gifted me a book called The Story of Indian Culture by Bahadur Mal, an autographed copy that had been gifted to my great-grandfather back in 1956. As I read it and learned more about India's ancient culture and stories, I wondered how much I knew about my own roots. I began reading a lot of ancient Indian epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata and texts like the Upanishads and Shiva Purana, and was struck by the richness of the stories, the message of tolerance and the great role models. I thought of combining that with my love of writing to write a book that would bring some of those tales to modern teenagers and help them connect with their roots and cultural heritage.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love reading all kinds of books- fantasy (JRR Tolkien being a favourite), Travel (Bill Bryson), History (William Dalrymple), Science (Carl Sagan) and books that explore why people do what they do (Malcolm Gladwell).

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I loved writing every bit of it!

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I'm 15 and in high school, so the struggle is to get writing to fit in between homework, assignment etc...so no quirky habit, just staying discplined and writing a bit each day (and a lot in holidays).

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Always look to the future, but be sure to learn from one's past and roots.

Interview with Tana Stone, Author of Legacy

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Legacy?

This book emerged at the end of a previous series, the Inferno Force of the Drexian Warriors, when one of the alien warriors goes back to the academy where he teaches. I wanted to write more in the world of the secret-shrouded academy, so Legacy and the Warriors of the Drexian Academy series was born.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Legacy, what would they be?

I actually have Spotify playlists for each of the four schools that make up the academy, so when readers take a quiz on my website to find out which school they belong in, they get the playlist.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love romance of any kind but I also read a lot of mysteries, which is why so many of my romance novels have some kind of mystery.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

A historical British mystery, an orc romance, and a nonfiction book about the philosophy of Ted Lasso.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I loved writing the scenes where the hero and heroine have to get through a maze of challenges.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I usually have a cat on my desk and sometimes one under it.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

"Just keep swimming" from Finding Nemo.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Which of the four schools--the Assassins, the Blades, the Irons, or the Wings--they would want to join!

Interview with Valerie Pepper, Author of The Grump's Guide to Chaos

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Grump's Guide to Chaos?

This is the third and final book in my Guided to Love series, and follows the oldest of three brothers. I knew this brother would have my heart from the minute he stepped onto the page in book one, because I understood that he had a gooey center beneath that grumpy shell. Once I knew I had a controlling, grumpy man on my hands, the next step was to figure out how to throw him for a loop. The main female character was born out of that need, and she was chaos and strength and the perfect foil for the main character’s need to control things all wrapped up in one. Plus, I wanted to tilt the grumpy-sunshine trope just a bit—she’s “sunshine,” sure, but she’s also extremely chaotic.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love contemporary romance—it’s my favorite to read and write! I tend to write more romantic comedy than anything, but that’s just a subgenre of romance.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

In the trad publishing space, it’s Rebecca Yarros’s "Iron Flame" (I’ve been a huge fan of hers since 2019; she’s who inspired me to write romance!) and Erin Hahn’s "Never Saw You Coming". Both those books have been out for a while, but I’m saving them. In the indie space, well, how much time do you have? I’m reading a great debut by A. Boss called "Wanted By You", and right behind it is Jess K. Hardy’s "The Curse of Nona May Taylor" in an effort to stave off my rampant desire for her upcoming book, "Lips Like Sugar".

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I write steamy romance, and a lot of the time those are the most fun to write, because there’s so much more going on than the physical stuff. And while the scenes in this book are incredibly steamy, they don’t compare to the final “grovel” scene, because it completely took on a life of its own. The female main character thinks, “What the hell is he doing?” and I typed it because I was thinking the same thing! I was completely taken by surprise and enjoyed following the characters to see what they would do next.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Just the usual: stare at the computer, will the words to come, cuss, write some words, backspace, cuss again, close my eyes, then write like I’m being chased by rabid dogs and the only way to keep them at bay is to get as many words down as possible.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I am relentlessly optimistic, and I always assume the best in people until or unless they prove me wrong. And I think the world would be a much better place if everyone read romance.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

You mean besides the fact that love and family, whether related or chosen, is what it’s all about? I think I’d like readers to remember that even when you think you’re the only one you can count on, there’s always someone to help you. Too often, people get into their own heads and fail to look around. So I think I’d want people to remember to look up and around, and to accept help when they need it.
