Interview with Luke Chmilenko, Author of Savage Dominion: The Complete Collection

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Savage Dominion: The Complete Collection?

For this story, it was my connection with Graeme (GD) that caused this book to come to life! Over the last few years they'd been cooking up this story in the back of their heads and as luck happened we started to share a few ideas with one another. It wasn't long before we both realized we had a great idea here and went all in on it!

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Yes it is! I am a die hard favorite of the LitRPG and Progression Fantasy genres and I can't get enough of it at the moment! I just love seeing how the characters develop - and what interesting powers they obtain during the stories. This is definitely a genre where the journey is magnitudes more exciting than the destination.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Right now I am re-reading 'The First Binding' by R.R Virdi and then my pile is empty! I'll need to try and find something new after I'm done!

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Honestly - the first opening chapter was our favorite! Typically in the past we wrote rather reserved and formally - this was a great book for us to dip into our irreverent sides and just let our inner voices go.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I like to walk and write! Lately I've been getting the majority of my day's writing done while on the treadmill! I know it's a little strange, but it's certainly been working well!

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

"I can do this" - it's an easy way to ground myself when the work and responsibilities get a bit overwhelming and hasn't failed me yet!

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

That it was fun! More than anything I hope that readers enjoy the stories that I put out, especially my funnier ones! If I managed to get you to smile or laugh at least once during a book, I consider it a huge victory!

Interview with Jamie Anderson, Author of Love, Julie

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Love, Julie?

Julie is a secondary character in my first book and I thought that she deserved her own story. I've struggled with a lot of things she struggled with and I wanted people to know that it's okay to talk about life's challenges, even if it can make people uncomfortable.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Love, Julie, what would they be?

I actually had a Spotify playlist for Julie so this question is great! A few of the songs were: "Here We Go" by Wild; "Mess is Mine" by Vance Joy and "Story of My Life" by One Direction.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love reading Thrillers and Mysteries which are a bit different than the books I have written so far.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I own over 200 books that I haven't read -- obviously I have problem -- but the next book on my pile is Fayne by Ann-Marie MacDonald. I saw it at the bookstore about a month ago and, despite the fact that I'd promised myself I wouldn't buy any more books, it called to me. I used to read her books when I was in my twenties so I'm looking forward to reading this one as someone who is um, slightly older.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Without giving anything away, I'll say the only scene that takes place in Julie's bedroom. Read into that what you like. 🙂

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I don't know if this is that quirky but I like to have complete quiet when I write. I can't listen to music or anything. If the pigeons are going crazy on my roof I have to play white noise.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Great question! These kinds of things change for me, depending on what is going on in my life. Right now it's: Worrying today is not going to make your future fear any easier.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

If you're struggling, reach out to someone. There are always more people out there who care than you think. Also: love yourself first.

Interview with R. Leigh, Author of Fiercely Possessive (Fierce Legacies Book 1)

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Fiercely Possessive (Fierce Legacies Book 1)?

When I started writing this book, I wasn’t sure if I would finish it or publish it. It was something different, a challenge that made me push boundaries and open new doors for me. Regency romances have always been my go-to when I wanted to snuggle up with a book, but one day I branched out and started reading dark romances, mafia and crime romances, and from that day I was hooked. I enjoyed the danger, the possessiveness, and arrogance of the characters, as well as the varied plots that can be developed. Characters driven by lust and a thirst for power were exciting to create and after several months of anxious deliberation, I decided to share it with others in the hope that they would enjoy it as much as I loved writing it.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

That would be a toss-up. I read Regency romances for years, and I suppose those could be considered my favorite, but darker more dangerous romances have earned their place on my bookshelves as well. I enjoy writing both. Sometimes I feel like being transported back in time to the ballrooms of London, while other times I feel like taking a stroll down a dark dirty alleyway and immersing myself with dangerous and arrogant criminals that fiercely love and lust the women they have claimed as their own.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

A Sinner’s Promise by Kylie Kent. Florian’s Bride by V. F. Mason. Chasing Cassandra by Lisa Kleypas. Reread list: The Duchess Deal by Tessa Dare.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I would have to say that my favorite scene to write was the scene where Eden was returning from a Yankee game after being on a date with a colleague from work, her life was just beginning to get back to normal after her passionate one-night stand with Alessio in Rome. While she had thought about him numerous times, she never imagined seeing him again. When she walked into her apartment to find him sitting in the dark waiting for her, I could just feel her heart leaping in her chest from both fear and excitement. That scene had a lot of tension and sexual energy as Alessio stalked her backward until she was trapped between the wall and his strong body. I’ll stop there and let you read the rest for yourselves.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

While I would enjoy writing in a secluded quiet library with soft classical music playing in the background, my sweet dog, Monster, lying at my feet begging for Cheetos, and a cup of hot English breakfast tea steeping before me, that is not my life. Instead, I find myself squeezing in writing time between my dogs barking constantly, my kids visiting from college, and my husband inquiring about the next book’s progress.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Striving for perfection is ok, but don’t let yourself get so hung up on everything being perfect and being successful that you don’t take chances, or you pass up on an experience because you are afraid of failing.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

When I write it’s like being transported to a different world or a different time, it’s my escape and that is what I would want for my readers, to have an escape from their everyday lives. Maybe even find a new book boyfriend.

Interview with Jim Perakis, Author of Fighting for Peace

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Fighting for Peace?

I wanted to remind people that the Vietnam War was a terrible US mistake that was unnecessarily lengthened by two presidents. Protestors were ridiculed for their mostly peaceful demonstrations as the country was told a set of lies by politicians.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Fighting for Peace, what would they be?

For Tom: "Lawyers, Guns and Money" by Warren Zevon. For Kate: "Goodbye Earl" by The Chicks.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I have always enjoyed light fiction – from the Hardy Boys when I was very young, to John D. McDonald, and more recently Michael Connelly and Elmore Leonard – all thrillers of some sort. What I enjoy the most is writing comedy – and I hope to find time for more of that.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I don’t have a pile of books to read, but I have dozens of eBook samples in my Kindle reader that pile up. I usually read three or four books at a time, skipping from one to another depending on my mood, finishing the ones I find interesting, and giving up on a lot part of the way through.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The dogfight that opens the book. I spoke with several fliers, some who had flown in dogfights over Vietnam and made kills. Some were very patriotic, others were upset over what they later learned about the war.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I listen to classical music in a closed door room without windows, stopping for a short break at 45 minute intervals. My favorite place to write is alone at a lunch table at a local department store.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Never attribute to malice what can be adequately explained by stupidity.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Fifty-eight thousand American fighters, mostly young men, died in an unwinnable and politically lengthened war. Chemical weapons – napalm and agent orange – were used by the U.S. and horrific acts of violence and cruelty were committed by both Vietnamese and American fighters.

Interview with André Costa, Author of Shakespeare's Vengeance

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Shakespeare´s Vengeance?

The story was first considered for a play. It was called "In the Name of Theater" and was meant to be a tragicomedy blending mystery and thriller. I envisioned a cult devoted to the god Dionysus, organized by a mysterious fraternity of Thespians, as a perfect setting for honoring the tradition of theater, bringing diverse dramatic elements to intertwine. Later, it became a play entitled "Shakespeare's Vengeance." The new title drew more attention to the plot's Shakespearian connections, adding to its suspense and intrigue. Since all characters have a protagonist posture, it became increasingly challenging and enticing to delve into each one's background, which was only possible through the landscape of a full novel. The play has been acclaimed by both audiences and critics in its debut in Rio de Janeiro, and now it is the turn for its enriched novel version to gains its public.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Shakespeare´s Vengeance, what would they be?

Noir Jazz songs; Louis Armstrong's "A Kiss to build a dream on."

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I mostly enjoy reading cross-genre fiction, particularly stories with witty twists and a touch of sarcastic humor. As for my writing, whether plays, novels, or film scripts, the inspiration from a theme or plot typically comes before my decision about the genre in which my story would unfold..

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I'm currently reading the complete collection of Anton Chekhov short stories.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I'd say the very ending, which took my soul away.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I wouldn't say it's a quirk, but rather an odd technique. I have the habit of creating a story after coming up with a title. It goes like this: a title, for some intangible reason and out of the blue, strikes my mind in such a way that it inspires me to work on a full story behind it. It's like holding onto a lamp in the darkness without previously knowing where to direct its glow. Eventually, the unfolded story matches its title.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I'm very fond of Stoicism. A quote by Seneca is among my favorites: "If one does not know to which port one is sailing, no wind is favorable.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

The absurdity of fiction is no match to that of reality.

Interview with Tracy Caple, Author of The Blue Guitar Pick (Fire and Ice Duet Book 1)

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Blue Guitar Pick (Fire and Ice Duet Book 1)?

As sad as it sounds, I wrote the first draft of this book while going through a relationship breakup. I hadn’t written anything substantial since my school days, but one day I began writing a short story to escape the chaos that was my personal life. That short story then grew into a full manuscript. That manuscript then remained a secret for many years until I had the courage to edit it, share it, and edit and edit again. However, personal life aside, I guess the inspiration for the book came from my love of 80s rock and the turbulent lives of rock stars and their fans.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Blue Guitar Pick (Fire and Ice Duet Book 1), what would they be?

For Emily this is easy, ‘You Ruin Me’ by The Veronicas. Ryan is a bit harder. ‘Always’ by Bon Jovi springs to mind, or maybe ‘The Flame’ by Cheap Trick.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love horror stories which is quite different from what I write. There is nothing like a spine-chilling story to get your heart racing. But in researching my chosen genre I am becoming quite partial to a well written romance.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

‘The Possession’ by Ambrose Ibsen, ‘The First 21’ by Nikki Sixx & ‘Repeat’ by Kylie Scott.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The concert scene at the beginning of the book is probably my favourite. It takes you back to rock concerts of the 1980s that can still be relevant today. I also love a scene much later in the book when Ryan is telling Emily everything that has happened in his life since they last met.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I need complete silence to write, although I can tolerate the 4 snoring dogs that are usually spread around my office.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Not really, but my father did tell me to never trust anyone who asks who tells you to trust them. It's usually a huge red flag.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Dreams can come true.

Interview with Alyce Guertin, Author of Warrior's Mate (Valcan Mates Book 2)

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Warrior's Mate (Valcan Mates Book 2)?

I love writing spicy alien romance! I was enthralled with Sayk and Janet when writing book one in the series and I just couldn't wait to write their story next.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love science fiction, horror, and thrillers, apart from romance, obviously!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Right now I'm reading A Soul to Heal by Opal Reyne.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I always love the meet cute the best!

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I love to settle in my favorite chair and I always sip on green tea while writing.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Not really. I'm the laid-back kind and I go with the flow.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

That love takes courage!

An Interview with the Authors of L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 40

What's the story behind the story? What inspired you to be a part of L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 40?

J. E. Schleicher: "Squiddy," my short story in L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future, is an examination of despair and addiction through a speculative lens.

Jack Nash: I love mythology and fables from across the world. This story is my love letter to those stories, many of which haven’t found their way into the fantasy genre like European myths have. Thematically, this story is also me grappling with questions about community, faith, and family relationships in my own life.

Kal M: My toaster fell and for a genuine moment I thought it spooked me on purpose. At the time I was also annoyed with myself for not being able to pick the mean options in Baldur's Gate (a DnD-based video game). Somehow, I ended up with a talking toaster.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 40, what would they be?

J. E. Schleicher: Before the Squid invasion, Jocelyn worked in a punk club, so the playlist would likely include songs from Dead Kennedys, Sex Pistols, Black Flag, and Sheer Mag, to name simply a few.

Kal M: That song from Toy Story, "You Got A Friend In Me" by Randy Newman.

What's your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

J. E. Schleicher: I read widely. A few of my favorite authors are Ray Bradbury, Toni Morrison, Cormac McCarthy, and Stephen King. While influenced by them, I write stories wherever my speculative imagination takes me, whether the destination is horror, science fiction, or fantasy. I aim to leave the reader with a fantastical aftertaste long after they put down a story of mine.

Jack Nash: I tend to gravitate to thrillers when I need an escape. I’m a big fan of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series in particular. However, when I write, I usually slip into speculative fiction, mostly dark fantasy and horror. I’m not sure why, other than when I read thrillers I keep thinking, ‘Wouldn’t it be neat if (insert bad guy) turned out to be a demon?’ or something else supernatural?

Kal M: Comedy, fantasy and horror. I don't usually write horror, but I do enjoy it!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

J. E. Schleicher: I'm currently reading and admiring Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man. Next up is to finish Stephen King's The Dark Tower series. I loved The Gunslinger. I'm almost embarrassed to admit I haven't read the rest of the series. Thankfully, it's an oversight I can joyfully remedy. Additionally, I enjoy reading poetry. Mary Oliver's Devotions is a daily companion of mine. I recently bought Cynthia Pelayo's poetry collection, Crime Scene. I'm excited to read it.

Jack Nash: So many. I’ve started Toni Morrison’s “Beloved” and am in love with her prose. I’ve also got S. A. Crosby’s recent Edgar-nominated novel, “All the Sinners Bleed,” on my shelf. For classics, I’m halfway through “Moby Dick,” just because I ignored it in high school and am repenting of that sin.

Kal M: How Much Of These Hills Is Gold (C. Pam Zhang) and Silas Marner (Eliot).

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

J. E. Schleicher: The opening scene. It set the neo-noir vibes and voice I maintained throughout the story.

Jack Nash: One that I ultimately had to cut. I wrote a scene with one of the main characters eating a meal. I loved it for the description and the insight we get into her choices throughout the story. However, it didn’t contribute to the forward momentum of the story, so I nixed it in the final draft.

Kal M: The tribulations of the security officer!

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

J. E. Schleicher: I've learned I'm most productive outside the house and its distractions. I'm often found scribing in a library or cafe. My current pre-writing routine is to meditate and read prose that inspires. Recently, I've been hand-writing my first drafts. For some unknown reason, handwriting quiets the editing part of my brain while I draft, which helps me get the story out easier and quicker without too much tweaking.

Jack Nash: I write my first draft in bullet points. It helps me think through the story without worrying about prose, which I add on my second or third pass.

Kal M: No, but I can't write with music or I'll start copying down lyrics.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

J. E. Schleicher: "Fall in love, and stay in love, and do what you love. And that's a good life, isn't it?" - Ray Bradbury

Jack Nash: Watch Me. I have stickers of it on my laptop, but it’s not meant for other people. It’s for me to tell my inner critic voice, who tells me I’m not good enough or won’t ever be good enough for whatever challenge I’m facing. So I tell myself, “Watch Me,” and I dive in.

Kal M: There are few things in life that are really important. The rest is just stuff.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

J. E. Schleicher: Through resilience, you can find hope.

Jack Nash: I’d want them to remember the emotions of the ending scene. There is reconciliation, alleviated guilt, hope. All good things to have linger with you.

Kal M: That deep down, most people just want to be loved.
